NN du Hommet1

FatherGuillaume I du Hommet1
ReferenceGAV24
Last Edited27 Jul 2020
NN du Hommet married Richard du Hommet Connétable de Normandie, son of Robert 'nepos Episcopi' (?).1

      ; Per Med Lands:
"RICHARD [du Hommet] (-[1180/81]). Assuming that his first marriage is correctly shown below, Richard adopted the name “du Hommet” after inheriting properties (including the right to the office Connétable de Normandie) from his first wife. Connétable de Normandie: "Ricardo de Humez constabulario…Roberto de Dunstanvilla…" witnessed the charter dated to [1152/54] under which Henri Duke of Normandy ceded the former house of "Conani thesaurarii" to Bayeux until his heirs paid a debt[744]. "Ricardus de Humez constabularius, Richardus de Haia…Robertus de Dunstanvilla…" witnessed the charter dated under which Henri Duke of Normandy notified a judgment relating to the house of the late "Conani thesaurarii" by charter dated to [1152/54][745]. Richard de Bohon Bishop of Coutances notified "…Ricardo de Hometo constabulo regis…" that he had placed a priest of the church of Thaon by charter dated to [1164][746]. "Guillelmus de Humeto" [identified as his son Guillaume [II] du Hommet?] confirmed the donation to Bayeux of the church of Hérils made by "Roberti de Novo Burgo" by charter dated 1166, witnessed by "…Ricardo de Humeto…"[747]. Military fee certifications in the Red Book of the Exchequer, in 1166, record that "Ricardi de Humez" held two knights fees in Sussex under the Earl of Arundel[748]. “Ricardus de Humet constabularius Henrici regis Angliæ” donated the church of St. Andrew, Stanford to Stanford Nunnery by charter dated 3 Feb 1170[749]. The Red Book of the Exchequer records enfeoffments in the duchy of Normandy in [1172], "Ricardus de Humeto" with 3 and a half knights "de honore de Hummeto" and 18 knights in his own service[750]. “Ricardus de Humet constabularius regis Angliæ” confirmed the foundation of Aulnay, including donations made by “Jordani de Saio et Luciæ uxoris eius” and by himself and “Agnetis uxoris meæ et filiorum meorum Willelmi, Enguerrani et Jordani”, by undated charter[751]. Henry II King of England confirmed the possessions of the abbey of Aulnay, including donations by "Richardi de Humetis et Agnetis uxoris sue, filie et heredis predicti Jordani" with the agreement of "Guillelmi de Humetis et Engerranni et Jordani filiorum suorum", by charter dated to [1181/89][752]. Robert of Torigny records the death in 1181 of "Richardus de Humet constabularius regis", adding that he had lived one and a half years as a monk "in abbatia de Alneto" [Aulnay] which he had built and that he left "filios suos heredes suæ terræ…Guillermum, Enjorannum, Jordanum"[753]. There must be some doubt about this year of death in light of the charter dated 1180 under which Henry II King of England confirmed "Willelmo de Humetis constabulariam meam" in his office previously held by "Ricardus de Humetis pater suus"[754].
"[m [firstly] --- du Hommet, daughter of GUILLAUME du Hommet [Connétable de Normandie] & his wife ---. Her parentage and marriage are confirmed by a charter dated 1213 under which Guillaume du Hommet granted to Roger de Saint-Lo “the chapel of Sainte Catherine, in the parish of Le Desert” including rent which “Guillelmus de Humeto constabularius avus meus” had donated before he married his daughter to “Ricardo” (“antequam filiam suam maritasset Ricardo”)[755]. Assuming that the information recorded in this charter is factually correct (about which there must be some doubt as pointed out above), this person must have been Richard’s first wife as she would have been the mother of his oldest son. Another document confuses the issue: by undated charter “Richard du Hommet, Constable of King Henry [Henry II], grandson of William du Hommet abovenamed” donated tithes from mills to Saint-Fromond by undated charter[756]. Richard would have been the son-in-law not grandson of Guillaume [I] du Hommet assuming that the information included in the 1213 document is correct, although “grandson” in Stapleton’s translated summary of the undated charter presumably represents his translation (maybe incorrect?) of the Latin term.]
"m [secondly] AGNES de Say, daughter of JORDAN de Say & his wife Lucy ---. Her parentage and marriage are referred to in Domesday Descendants[757]. Richard du Hommet donated property to Aunay with the consent of "uxore mea Agnete et filiis meis Willelmo, Engerranno et Jordano" by undated charter[758]. Henry II King of England confirmed the possessions of the abbey of Aunay, including donations by "Richardi de Humetis et Agnetis uxoris sue, filie et heredis predicti Jordani" with the agreement of "Guillelmi de Humetis et Engerranni et Jordani filiorum suorum", by charter dated to [1181/89][759].
"Richard & his [first] wife had one child:
i) GUILLAUME [II] du Hommet (-after 1213).

"Richard & his [first/second] wife had [four] children:
ii) ENGUERRAND du Hommet.
iii) JORDAN du Hommet.
iv) [AGATHA du Hommet .]
v) [daughter (-after 14 Jul 1223). Dame de Glos."

; Per Genealogics:
“Bertrada, also called Berthe or Bertree, and perhaps a Merovingian princess, was born about 670. She is known to be the mother of Heribert/Caribert of Laon, with whom she was co-founder and benefactor of the Benedictine abbey of Prüm, which they founded in 721. Through Heribert's daughter Bertrada of Laon, wife of Pippin 'the Short', king of the Franks. Bertrada is the great-grandmother of Charlemagne.
“Two alternative hypotheses to the question of Bertrada's parentage have been suggested: that she was the daughter of the seneschal and Pfalzgraf Hugobert and Irmina of Oeren; or that she was the daughter of Theudoric III, king of Neustria and Austrasia, and Clotilda of Heristal.
“It is not known when Bertrada died, but it was after 721.
“The abbey of Prüm became the favourite monastery of the Carolingians and received large endowments and privileges. In 882 and 892 the monastery was plundered and devastated by the Normans. In 1801 it fell to France and was secularised. Today the remaining monastic buildings are used for the secondary school the 'Regino-Gymnasium', named after Abbot Regino of Prüm.”.6

; Per Med Lands:
"--- . m BERTRADA, daughter of ---. The editor of Einhard's Annals in the MGH SS series records that "Pippinus…uxoris pater et Avia Charibertus et Bertradana" founded the monastery of Prüm[599]. This is presumably based on the charter dated 23 Jun 720 under which "Bertrada seu Berta et filius meus Chairibertus" donated property to Prüm, witnessed by "Bernarius, Chrodolande, Theodericus"[600], although the charter is probably spurious as it predates the foundation of the abbey. It is assumed that this refers to the mother of Charibert, father of Queen Bertrada, although another possibility is that it refers to the wife of Charibert and an otherwise unknown son of Charibert, brother of Queen Bertrada. The Monumenta Epternacensia record a donation by "Berta, filiis meis Chardradus et Harbertus"[601]."

; Per Med Lands:
"The Vandals, then living around the river Vistula in Silesia, migrated towards the banks of the river Rhine in the 3rd century[3]. In conjunction with the Suevi and the Alans, the Vandals crossed the Rhine in 406, taking advantage of Rome's decision to divert troops from the area to fight the Visigoths in Italy. The Vandals, Alans and Suevi proceeded to sack southern France, and threatened the Iberian peninsula. Dissatisfied with the inability of Emperor Honorius to contain the threat, the army elected Emperor Constantine III who established his base at Arles in Summer 408. Emperor Constantine sent his son Constantius into Spain, together with General Maximus who declared himself emperor[4]. With the Roman authorities distracted by the struggle between the rival emperors, the barbarian forces entered Spain in 411 and started to settle in small numbers. The Vandals settled in the interior of Galicia, the Alans in Lusitania[5]. The Chronicon of Bishop Idatius records that “Alani et Wandali et Suevi” entered Spain in 409, adding in a later passage that the Vandals occupied Galicia, the Suevi “sitam in extremitate Oceani maris occidua”, and the Alans “Lusitaniam et Carthaginensem provincias”, in 411[6]. The Vandals' need for territory increased as they absorbed local populations. They first attacked the neighbouring areas around Orense held by the Suevi, but eventually directed their attention to the south of Spain[7]. Their control over the southern coastline enabled the Vandals to migrate en masse into North Africa in 429, although what triggered this migration is not known with certainty. The Byzantines conquered the land of the Vandals in Africa during the reign of Emperor Justinian I (527-565), consolidating their power in coastal strongholds such as Tripoli and Carthage. They neglected their landward defences which, from the mid-7th century, facilitated the conquest of these Byzantine lands by the Muslims."

First mentioned in 391 when he moved southwards into Greece, he suffered several military setbacks but succeeded in resettling the Goths in Macedonia[7]. He was elected in 395 as ALARIC King of the Visigoths. He entered the western part of the Roman Empire in 401, and by the end of the year had attacked Venetia and was threatening Milan. Alaric was defeated by the Romans in 402 at Pollenza, and in 403 at Verona, after which the Goths abandoned Italy and settled in Dalmatia and Pannonia[8]. King Alaric returned to Italy in 408, the Goths' attacks culminating in the sack of Rome in Aug 410[9]. Procopius records that Alaric died from illness[10].

      ; Per Med Lands:
"The common connection with Autun, and the common use of the name "Theoderic", suggest that the following family was closely related to the family of Nibelung and Childebrand. If this is correct, the only possibility from a chronological point of view is that either Theoderic [I] or his wife was the child of Nibelung [I]. A different speculation is that Theoderic [I] may have been related to the early Saxon leader Widukind (see SAXONY), in whose family references have been found to "Theoderich". The presence of Comte Theoderic, whom it seems likely was the same person as Theoderic [I], in Saxony as recorded by Einhard in 782 (see below) suggests that he may have been acting in some official capacity for the Franks, maybe because of his prior connection with Saxony. It is not impossible that Theoderic was one of the Saxon leaders who surrendered to Charles I King of the Franks in 777 and was rewarded with appointments at the royal court. If this speculation is correct, the name Theoderic may have entered the Nibelung/Childebrand family through Dunna, the wife of Childebrand [III], whose origin is unknown. A third possibility is that Theoderic was a Frankish name which predated the Carolingian conquest of Saxony, as shown by the charter dated 8 Jul 753 under which "Pippinus rex Francorum" confirmed rights to market customs duties of the abbey of Saint-Denis by charter dated 8 Jul 753 which names "fidelibus…Theuderico…"[410]. (see MEROVINGIAN NOBILITY).
"THEODERIC [I], son of --- (-[791/15 Dec 804]). The origin of Comte Theoderic is not known. An interesting speculation is a relationship with the early Saxon leader Widukind, as explained above. Comte d'Autun. Einhard indicates that Theoderich was related to Charles I King of the Franks when he records that in 782 the king sent his three missi "Adalgiso camerario et Geilone comite stabuli et Worado comite palati" to meet "in…Saxonis…Theodericus comes, propinquus regis"[411], the relationship probably being through the wife of Theoderic [I] (see below). "Carolus…rex Francorum et Langobardorum" gave a judgment by charter dated to [Dec 775] which names "fidelibus…Widrigo, Odrigo, Theodrico, Bernehardo, Albuino, Aginhardo, Berngario comitibus et Anshelmo comite palacii nostri"[412]. Einhard records that Charles I King of the Franks sent "Theodorico comite et Meginfredo camerario suo" to "aquilonalem Danubii ripam" in 791[413]. "Willelmus…comes" names "genitore meo Theuderico et genitrice mea Aldana" in his charter dated 14 Dec 804 (version two: dated 15 Dec 804) for the foundation of the monastery of Gellone[414].
"m ALDANA, daughter of ---. "Willelmus…comes" names "genitore meo Theuderico et genitrice mea Aldana" in his charter dated 14 Dec 804 (version two: dated 15 Dec 804) for the foundation of the monastery of Gellone[415]. Settipani quotes an Aquitaine necrology which lists "Willelmus…pater eius Theodericus, mater Aldana soror Hiltrudis et Landradæ"[416]. He suggests that "Hiltrudis" was the wife of Odilo Duke of Bavaria, and therefore that the wife of Theoderic was Aldana, daughter of Charles "Martel" maiordomus of Austrasia and Neustria [Carolingian]. The theory is attractive but not conclusive, as its validity depends on there being no other contemporary Hiltrudis, which is not provable. Hlawitschka highlights the case against the affiliation[417]. However, the evidence of the 25 May 765 charter, quoted in the document MEROVINGIAN NOBILITY under Aldana’s supposed sister Landrada, suggests that Settipani’s hypothesis may be correct. In addition, Einhard indicates that Theoderic [I] was related to Charles I King of the Franks when he records that in 782 King Charles sent his three missi "Adalgiso camerario et Geilone comite stabuli et Worado comite palati" to meet "in…Saxonis…Theodericus comes, propinquus regis"[418]. One possible relationship being between the king and Theoderic [I] would have been through his wife, if she had been the king's paternal aunt.
Theoderic [I] & his wife had [seven] children:
1. TEUDOIN (-826 or after).
a) THEODERIC [III] (-[after 826]). 816/21.
2. THEODERIC [II] (-after 14 Dec 804, maybe after 811).

(4) there is Prince Makhir, son of Yehuda [Judah], son of Yitzhak [another brother of Natronai, Gaon of Pumbeditha], son of Nehemiah, son of Haninai Baradai, son of the Jewish Exilarch Bustanai.
I think it would be helpful in the criticisms of Makhir to distinguish which one is in question. Nat Taylor wrote an article against identifying Makhir # 1 (above) with Theuderic of Narbonne. Bryant-Abraham makes an excellent case in his "De Domo et Familia David" article that Makhir # 2 (above) is to be identified with Theuderic of Narbonne. There are some chronological difficulties in the story of Makhir # 3 (above) for him to be identified with Theuderic of Narbonne. And, Makhir # 4 lived in the generation after Makhir #s 1, 2, & 3, who were contemporaries, and therefore the least likely to be identified with Theuderic of Narbonne though his identification appears to be popular on the internet. The identification of Theuderic [Thierri] of Narbonne with one of the Jewish princes who bore the name Makhir is generally accepted today by competent scholars, except for a few who prematurely rejected the identification without any scholarly investigation of the facts on their parts and can not accept now the fact that they were wrong.7 Thierry I (?) Comte d'Autun was also known as Thierry IV.6

; Per Stone [2000]: "...possible count and duke in the Rhineland, 787/793..."3 Thierry I (?) Comte d'Autun was also known as Teiric I d'Autun.8

3. ADALELM .
4. [--- . m ---.] One possible child:
5. GUILLAUME ([750/55]-Gellone [28 May [812/13]/21 May 815]).
6. ABBA [Albana] (-after 804).
7. BERTA [Bertana]."

** Thierry, mentioned in 782 and in 804.
