      ; 'John D. Cottingham was born near Dover, Del., Dec. 31, 1805, and hereceived a good education for his day. He became a merchant, and decidedto try his fortunes in the West, then just beginning to be more generallysettled. He located in Hamilton County, Ind., one of the pioneers inNoblesville, and engaged in mercantile pursuits there for a number ofyears. Much of the profit of his enterprise he put into land, became theowner of several large farms, and laid out part of the town of Cicero onhis land. Moving thither in 1849 or 1850, he was one of the firstresidents of the new town, was its leading merchant and continued inbusiness there till his death, Feb. 10, 1875. In addition to his ownprivate business he was active in public affairs, was one of theprominent men of his locality and served in 1842 as a justice of thepeace. His docket is still preserved. In politics he was a Republican,and was proud to have had the privilege of voting for Abraham Lincoln. InNoblesville, John married Hannah Mull, born in New Jersey June 4, 1815,daughter of Samuel and Hannah Mull, pioneer settlers near Strawtown. Afamily of seven children blessed the union of John and Hannah, all bornin Hamilton County, Ind.: John W., Hannah, Emma, Catherine, Calista,Olin H., and Ella. John reared his family in the Methodist faith, towhich church he belonged. He was always active in its work, was a classleader and helped found the first church of that denomination in Cicero.Hannah died there some years before her husband, Feb. 2, 1866, at the ageof 50 years and eight months.' Cottingham died at Kokomo, whither he had just moved, Thursdaymorning of last week, from discase (sic) of the head, after havingsuffered intensely for about a week, at the age of 70 years. Mr.Cottingham was a pioneer settler in Hamilton County, having moved here inthe spring of 1824. Was married in 1835 or 1836 to Hannah Mull, whocontinued to be his wife until her death ten years ago. Previous to hismarriage he had been an intemperate man. It was a stipulation of hismarriage contract that he would cease the habit of 'drinking,' which hedid, joined the M.E. Church and lived the remainder of his days as atemperate and religious man. Was appointed at the death of Dr. Palmer toserve out his term as Auditor of the county; was afterward a Justice ofthe Peace for this township and always a prominent and highly esteemedcitizen. About three years ago he married his third wife, an excellentlady of Tipton County, when he moved to her home near Lancaster in thatcounty, where he continued to live until about two weeks ago when hemoved to Kokomo and was taken sick before he had arranged his householdgoods, and died as above stated. his remains were brought to Cicero andburied by the side of the grave of his first wife. He had been afaithful and prominent member of the Methodist church for about fortyyears. Was half brother of the late Joshua Cotttingham of Noblesville,and leaves a large circle of friends and relatives to mourn his death.' Moved to HamiltonCo., Indiana in 1825 where he lived with the exception of three yearsspent in Tipton Co. Moved to Kokomo three weeks before his death on themorning of February 11, 1875 in his 70th year. He was a member of theM.E. church for 43 years. he leaves a widow, six of his own children andseveral step-children. His body was taken to Cicero for burial. Thefuneral sermon was preached by the Rev. T. Stabler.1'

; He was killed on a Thursday afternoon at the Farley gravel pit just southof Cicero, Indiana. He and several other men were using a steam shovelto load gravel cars and Ralston got in the path of the shovel as it wasswinging from the pit to the car it was loading. Ralston was struck inthe back of the head and knocked forward with great force into a sharpcorner. Quoting a newspaper account of the accident, it 'literally cutaway a part of his forehead and his brains fell from his head andbespattered things for several feet around the place of the accident.'The death was ruled an accident. According to the newspaper account, Ralston was a member of the Knightsof Pythias Lodge and was survived by a wife and one child.(Unfortunately, the copy of the article does not have a date or even areference as to what paper it's from.)1
