      ; Greg,

I saw your information on Rootsweb about Susan Elvira Hudson. She was my GGfather's sister. I attached the following note to your Rootsweb info:

There are at least 2 additional sons of Ann Hudson and Unknown Hudson. My GGfather, James W Hudson (1822-7/25/1893) was born in Culpeper County, Virginia and died in Warren County, Missouri. He was married to Eliza Reynolds (@1829 - @1901)in 1844 and they had 15 children.

The other known brother was Thomas J Hudson (@1823-1/22/1896). He was also born in Culpeper and died at the Confederate Home in Lafayette County, MO. I do not know if he was married.

Ann or Anna, their mother was from Culpeper, Virginia and died in Warren County on 11/14/1881.Her death notice said that she came to Missouri in 1834 and spent most of her life in Warren County after coming to Missouri.

If you have located any additional information since your posting, I would love to have it.

Sir William Feilding Knt. married Agnes St. Liz, daughter of John St. Liz.1,2,4

Sir William Feilding Knt. died on 4 May 1471 at Battle of Tewkesbury, Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England.1
      ; Last year mep asked a question about a Cave/Feilding connection. I
was lately working on the Cave family and can now answer that
question.

To wit, Mep asked whether Anne Feilding who was the daughter of
William Feilding d 1471 and Agnes St Liz; and who, this Anne, married
Humphrey Grey d 1499 and "aged 12" in 1460

whether this Anne was the same person as

the wife of Richard Cave of Pickwell, whom Mep also calls Anne
Feilding.

Short answer, no the wife of Richard Cave of Pickwell, Leics, was the
grand-neice of Anne (Feilding) Grey

Documentation on this line is a bit sparse on the ground so far but
both William Cave, canon, and John Cave, vicar have DNB entries which

; per Henry Project: [quote]Herbert Bacon, acting count of Maine, 1032×5-1038.
Herbert is mentioned in a charter along with his father Hugues and his brother Hugues [Latouche (1910), 162 (see above)]. He appears as "Herbertus frater comitis" in two charters of his brother Hugues III, one from 1014 and the other undated [Cart. S.-Victeur, 4 (#3), 6 (#4)]. He appears in the Actus as an avunculus of count Herbert I "Wake-Dog" ["... Herbertus, comes, cognomine Baco, avunculus Herberti ..." Act. Pont. Cenom., 363]. On the death of Herbert "Wake-Dog" in 1032×5, Herbert Bacon, who must have been rather old by that time, became guardian of the young count Hugues IV. His years as acting count included a struggle with Gervais, bishop of Le Mans, ending with his capture (1038) and relegation to a monastery [Act. Pont. Cenom., 363-5; Halphen (1906), 69-70; Latouche (1910), 26-7]. [end quote]1

The Actus pontificum Cenomannis records that Bishop Gervais arranged the marriage of "Hugonem…Herberti filium" and "Bertam…Alani Britannorum comitis olim coniugem"[141]. Orderic Vitalis records that "Hugo filius Herberti", after the death of "Alannus Britannorum comes" who was poisoned “a Normannis in Normania”, married “Bertam ipsius relictam, Tedbaldi Blesensium comitis sororem”[142]. Her second marriage is confirmed by the Chronicon Ruyensis Cœnobii which records the death in 1062 of "Herbertus Cenomannensium Comes et frater uterinus Conani ducis"[143]. The Flandria Generosa names "Berta comitissa" as daughter of "altera Ermengardis comitissa", when outlining the basis for the consanguinity between Baudouin VII Count of Flanders and his wife [Hawise] de Bretagne which provided the grounds for the couple's separation[144]. After the death of her second husband, Berthe was expelled from Le Mans by the inhabitants who invited Geoffroy "Martel" Comte d'Anjou to enter the town. "Comitis Tedbaldi sorori…Berte" donated property by charter dated 12 May 1069[145]. The Chronicon Britannico records the death in 1084 of "Bertha Comitissa mater Conani"[146]. The Chronicon Britannico Alter records the death in 1085 of "Bertha religiosa Comitissa", stating that she restored "Monasterium S. Melanii"[147]. The Chronicon Ruyensis Cœnobii records the death in 1085 of "Berthæ comitissæ"[148]. The necrology of Chartres cathedral records the death "II Id Apr" of "Berta comitissa"[149]. The Chronicon Kemperlegiensis records the death "Kal Jun" in 1085 of "Bertha Comitissa Britanniæ, mater Conani Ducis, soror Fulconis"[150], although no other record has been found which confirms that Berthe had a brother named Foulques."

Of the two possible years, 1051 and 1052, 1051 is much more likley [Halphen (1906), 75-6].
     Place of death: Unknown.
Father: Herbert I, d. 1032×5, count of Maine. ["... ab Hugone Cenomanorum comite filio Herberti illius qui Evigilans-Canes dictus est..." ca. 1046, Cart. Trinité de Vendôme, 123 (#66)]
     Mother: Unknown.
Spouse: m. 14 May 1045 × 14 May 1047, Berthe, d. 1085, daughter of Eudes, count of Blois, and widow of Alain III, count of Brittany. ["Hugo filius Herberti postquam Alannus Britannorum comes a Normannis in Normannia impotionatus occubuit Bertam ipsius relictam Tedbaldi Blesensium comitis sororem in coniugium accepit" OV iv (vol. 2, pp. 304-5); "In tantum autem antistes Gervasius dilexit Hugonem, quem de sacro fonte susceperat, ut quaereret ei uxorem, Bertam videlicet, nobilissimam, feminam, Alani, Britannorum comitis, olim conjugem..." Act. Pont. Cenom., 365] The date range can be deduced because a charter datable to the range 14 May 1046 × 14 May 1047 is stated to have occurred in the year in which the count married Berthe ["quo anno idem comes Bertam duxerat in uxorem" Latouche (1910), 28, n. 4; 144]. Latouche cites the cartulary of Sainte-Croix de Quimperlé for her date of death [Latouche (1910), 33, n. 2].
Children:
The genealogy of the counts of Maine during this period is discussed in detail on Paula's page.
MALE Herbert II, d. 9 March 1062, count of Maine. ["Obiit Habertus, comes, filius Hugonis juvenis" 9 March, Nec. Mans, citing Martyrologe du Pré; Latouche, 33, n. 3, also cites the cartulary of Sainte-Croix de Quimperlé]
FEMALE Margaret, fiancé of Robert II, duke of Normandy, son of William the Conqueror.

"Davide de Haya, Roberto, Thome et Johane de Hayis fratribus eius…" witnessed the undated charter under which "Johanis Gyffard de Polgauein" donated "viam…a ponte…inter terram meam de Polgavyn et terram ipsorum monachorum de Carso" to Cupar abbey[719].      "m firstly ETHEN, daughter of ---. It is possible that she was Ethen of Strathearn, daughter of Gilbert Earl of Strathearn and his first wife Matilda de Albini. This is suggested by the undated charter under which her son "Gilbertus de Haya" confirmed the donation of "terciam partem piscarie…de Glesbanin…[et] de Rugesablun" to Lindores Abbey, made by "bone memorie David de Haya pater meus", which is witnessed by "…Malisio de Strathern consanguineo meo…"[725]. The name "Ethen" is unusual, and it is possible that the relationship with Malise was through Gilbert’s mother. If the subscriber Malise of Strathearn was the son of Earl Gilbert, this possibility would present no chronological difficulties. If the hypothesis was correct, Gilbert was born from this first marriage of his father. "David de Haya" donated "terciam partem piscarie…de Glesbanin…[et] de Rugesablun" to Lindores Abbey, for the souls of "uxorum mearum Ethne et Eue", by undated charter, witnessed by "Gilberto filio meo, Roberto de Haya fratre meo, Malcolmo de Haya fratre meo…"[726].

John Brown married Audrey Vere, daughter of Sir Henry Vere of Great Addington, Northants.1

John Brown died before 1551.1
; Sir Wistan Brown was the son of either Robert or Thomas Brown of Essex
(depending which Visitation version one follows). He was sheriff of
Essex and Herts in 1514.

His wife was a daughter of William Mordaunt of Turvey, Beds. ODNB
states her name was Elizabeth [biography of Sir Anthony Brown] while
the Visitation of Essex calls her Maud.

His younger brother was Sir Humphrey Brown, justice of the Common
Pleas (d 1562).

Sir Wistan was dead by 26 Henry VIII:

"Essex and Hertfordshire: Inquisition on possessions of Wistan Broun
collector of customs in port of London" (PRO E 199/12/11)

We now know that Sir Wistan had at least two sons and five daughters:

1. John Brown, son and heir, named in the Visitation of Essex and in
PRO C 1/1003/25-26 (see below); he married Audrey Vere, daughter and
coheir of Henry Vere of Addington, and left issue, a son George
Brown. John Brown was dead by 1551:

"George Brown of White Roding, Essex, esquire, ( son and heir of John
Brown dec'd, who was son and heir of Sir Weston Brown), to Mathew
Brodurye of Rickling, Essex, gent." (Herts RO DE/AS 1-4898 dated 2
June 1551)

2. Sir Anthony Brown, justice of the Common Pleas, born c1509; died
1567; will proved PCC, in which he states his father was Sir Wistan
Brown; married but without issue (see ODNB)

Essex)

4. (daughter) married Mr Smith of Lincolnshire (Vis Essex)

5. (daughter) married Mr Cutts of Debden (Vis Essex)

6. (daughter) married Mr Knighton of Suffolk (Vis Essex)

7. Elizabeth Brown, married Rice (?Rees/?Richard) Herbert:

Browne, knight, v. John BROWN, esquire, son and heir of the said Sir
Wistan: Legacy charged on the manor of Langenhoe: ESSEX" (dated
