His death occurred in 1730. His grandson, John Jacobs (3), was the Speaker of the first .General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. His brother, Israel, was a member of Congress in 1791, and another brother, Jesse, held a captain's commission and served in the Revolutionary war, participating in a number of important battles. Ann Bowen, mother of Mary B. and Emily (Jacobs) Valentine, was in direct line of descent from John Bowen (1), of Whiteland, Chester County, who died in 1715. The paternal grandmother of Mary B. and Emily (Jacobs) Valentine was Mary Brinton, of Thornburg, Delaware Co., Penn., who was in line from William Brinton (1), of Staffordshire, England, who settled in Concord, Birmingham Township, Delaware Co., Penn.,in 1684, and was among the earliest converts of George Fox. He bought large tracts of land in Chester County. He was born in 1630, and died in 1700. His son, William, was a member of the Provincial Assembly in 1666, and died in 1751.      He was a mentioned with Reuben Miller and Thomazine Valentine at Citation; from Beers [1898:239]: "The Miller family was among the very earliest settlers of Pennsylvania, locating on the banks of the Delaware river about 1675, several years before William Penn took up his residence here. Later members of the fmaily made their home at what isnow Downingtown. reuben Millers, the grandfather of our subject, was a resident of Chester county, this State, and was a miller by trade as well as by name. He married Thomazine Valentine, and had eight children: William, who became a walthy citizen of Kentucky, and whose daughter isnow living in Harrisburg, Penn; Robert V., Isaac; Merdica, who also lived in Kentucky; Mrs. Eliza Thomas; Mrs. Mary Ann Harris; Mrs. Jane Harris; and Mrs. Rachel Miles.
     Robert V. Miller, the father of our subject, was a native of Chester county, and after the death of his father he went to Alexandria, Va., and lived with his uncle, Mordica Miller, until 1815, at which time
he came to Centre county with his uncles, Valentine Bros., and worked in an iron store at Bellefonte..."⁷ Isaac Miller was a mentioned with William Ashbridge Thomas at Citation; per Linn [1881:253] "William A. worked at his father's mill, and when only seventeen years old rented a mill on Beaver Creek, above Downingtown. In 1815 his elder brother Jacob came to Centre county with the Valentine brothers, and together they rented the dunlop estate, works, and iron interests. Jacob Thomas, however, returned to Chester County and died, and thereupon (in 1817) William A. Thomas came up and took his place, and thus became identified ever afterward with the Valentines...In 1827, Mr. Thomas, in connection with Isaac Miller, etc., leased Mill Hall Iron-Works, Clinton County..."⁸

     Daughter of Isaac Mason and Mary Ann Couch. She married William Smith Downing on 6 Feb 1825, by whom she had nine children, four dying young. Her name also appears as "Thamison" and "Thamzine" in census and other records. Suspect the "C" in her middle name stood for "Couch", her mother's maiden name, as her first born was named Mary Couch Downing. William and Thomazine farmed 200 acres near Lionville all their lives.

     Genealogy of the Palmer-Trimble Families, Page 811: "they removed in 1853 from Chester County, Pennsylvania, to Nauvoo, Illinois, and in 1855 to a farm six miles east of that place, which was their final home." This fits with the 1850 census, which places them in Uwchlan township, Chester county, PA. They have no children at that time, Mary Ann having lost three that died in infancy.
     Beidler book, p. 263, indicates Mary Ann Downing was the 2nd wife of Morgan Lewis.
