      ; NOTE:
     There were two women named "Mary Ann" who married DICKEY men. There was a Mary A. (Mary Ann) ROBERTS/SILVEY? who married an Edward C. DICKEY in 1842 and a there was a (different) Mary A. (Mary Ann "Polly") ROBERTS who married a William Gillis DICKEY in 1850. Some researchers show these two marriages were for the same woman. However, I do not believe that was the case. One couple, an Edward C. and a Mary A. DICKEY appeared in the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses (always in Roane Co., TN). The other couple, a William G. and Mary A. DICKEY, appeared in the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses (of which 1850 was for Roane Co., TN, while 1860, 1870 and 1800 were for Tebo, Henry Co., MO). The same woman in two households, so far apart, in the same years for three decades is improbable.
     I am convinced that the Mary A. ROBERTS who married a William Gillis DICKEY in 1850 was the dau. of Robert Samuel and Margaret (GARDNER) ROBERTS. Robert Samuel ROBERTS was in Roane Co., TN by the 1830 census and was there for the 1840 census. I have so far been unable to identify the parents of the Mary A. ROBERTS/SPIVEY who married an Edward C. DICKEY in 1842. There is a marriage record showing Edward's bride as Mary Ann ROBERTS, but the death certificate for their son, Phillip R. DICKEY (10 May 1846-16 Feb 1930), gives his parents and Edward DICKEY and Mary Ann SILVEY [sic].
     There were, in fact, five SILVEY households listed in the 1840 census for Roane Co., TN: two John SILVEYs (p. 68, line 5 and p. 70, line 7), a William SILVEY (p. 70, line 10), and two Samuel SILVEYs (p. 68, line 16 and p. 70, line 11). the household of John SILVEY (p. 68, line 5) has a female of about the correct age (ca 20 years old) to have been the then unmarried Mary Ann SILVEY (listed as aged 30 in 1850, 40 in 1860, 50 in 1870, and 60 in 1880). None of the William SILVEY and Samuel SILVEY households have young woman listed of an appropriate age. Importantly, the three SILVEY households on p. 70 (John, Samuel and William) are on the same page as that of Robert Samuel ROBERTS, the father of the Mary Ann "Polly" ROBERTS, who married Edward C. DICKEY. Samuel DICKEY, the best candidate for the father of both Edward C. DICKEY and William Gillis DICKEY, is listed on the next page (p. 71, line 5) of the same 1840 Roane Co., TN census.
     There were eight SILVEY households listed in the 1830 census for Roane Co., TN: seven of these households on one page (p. 63 - Charles, John, Samuel, William Junior, William Senior, Samuel Senior and Polly. the eighth household, that of a second John SILVEY, is on the next page (p. 64). This listing proximity probably correlates with geographical proximity and implies that at least the severn SILVEY household on p. 63 are related. A Mary Ann SILVEY, who married Edward C. DICKEY, would have been about 10 years old in 1830. Of the eight SILVEY household listed, XX contain a female potentially of that age: John (p. 63), Samuel, William Junior, Samuel Senior, and John (p. 64). This does not help narrow the candidate for Mary Ann's father.
     There is one other SILVEY family tie that bears mentioning. Thomas SILVEY 9c1817-unk), the son of Samuel SILVEY (c1790-unk), had a daughter, Nancy Green SILVEY (1840-1883) who married William Monroe ROBERTS. The Mary Ann "Polly" ROBERTS, who married William Gillis DICKEY, was the sister of this William Monroe ROBERTS. family ties between the SILVEY and ROBERTS families of Roane Co. did exist. It is not impossible that the Mary Ann SILVEY/ROBERTS who married William Gillis' brother, Edward C. DICKEY, was actually a ROBERTS, but from a different ROBERTS household than that of William Monroe and his father, Robert Samuel Roberts. A closer analysis of the 1830 and 1840 census listings for other ROBERTS families in Roane Co. might shed some light on this. There were 12 ROBERTS households listed in Roane Co. in 1830 and 26 households listed there in 1840.
     Some Ancestry family trees show both William and Edward as the sons of Samuel and Sarah (Bradley) DICKEY. I believe that is a possibility. There were only two DICKEY households enumerated in Roane Co. in 1840, a Samuel (probably the oldest male in the household who is shown as aged 60-69) and a David H. (probably the oldest male in the household and who is shown as aged 30-39). It is Samuel DICKEY who is on the page (p. 71) following the ROBERTS AND SILVEY listings (p. 70) and is of an appropriate age to have been the father of Edward C. and/or William Gillis DICKEY. David H. DICKEY is several pages (and likely many miles) away in the enumeration (p. 56) and is too young to have been the father of either.
     Furthermore, I believe it is a possibility that the Mary A(nn) that married Edward C. DICKEY was Mary Ann SILVEY, possibly the daughter of Samuel SILVEY just mentioned. The 1840 Roane Co., TN census puts all three households (Robert Samuel ROBERTS, Samuel SILVEY, and Samuel DICKEY all in reasonable geographic proximity. The name on the image of the marriage record is clearly written as "Mary Ann Roberts". The mother's name on their son's death certificate is clearly written as "Mary A. Silvey". Typically, a primary contemporary record (original marriage record) trumps a much later record (death certificate). At this stage, I have no other explanation for the difference in maiden names unless she was a widow ROBERTS when she married Edward. Mary Ann was probably too young (ca 22 in 1842 when she married Edward) to have been the widow of a Mr. ROBERTS at that time, but it is not impossible.

They had two children (both daughters). Nancy E. Gammon-Roberts died about 1839. John Jackson Roberts married second to Etha Linda Underwood-Napier (mother of James John Roberts), widow of Thomas M. Napier and daughter of John Underwood and Jeannie Utley, on 21 January 1841 in Roane Co TN. They had eleven children. Etha Linda Underwood-Roberts died in 1864. John Jackson Roberts married third to Charlotte Buster-Rector, widow of George W. Rector, parents unknown, on 2 November 1865 in Fannin Co TX. They had four children. John Jackson Roberts died in Fannin Co TX on 7 September 1883 and was buried at Caney Creek Cemetery, Coontown, Fannin Co TX.      There were two women named "Mary Ann" who married DICKEY men. There was a Mary A. (Mary Ann) ROBERTS/SILVEY? who married an Edward C. DICKEY in 1842 and a there was a (different) Mary A. (Mary Ann "Polly") ROBERTS who married a William Gillis DICKEY in 1850. Some researchers show these two marriages were for the same woman. However, I do not believe that was the case. One couple, an Edward C. and a Mary A. DICKEY appeared in the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses (always in Roane Co., TN). The other couple, a William G. and Mary A. DICKEY, appeared in the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses (of which 1850 was for Roane Co., TN, while 1860, 1870 and 1800 were for Tebo, Henry Co., MO). The same woman in two households, so far apart, in the same years for three decades is improbable.
     I am convinced that the Mary A. ROBERTS who married a William Gillis DICKEY in 1850 was the dau. of Robert Samuel and Margaret (GARDNER) ROBERTS. Robert Samuel ROBERTS was in Roane Co., TN by the 1830 census and was there for the 1840 census. I have so far been unable to identify the parents of the Mary A. ROBERTS/SPIVEY who married an Edward C. DICKEY in 1842. There is a marriage record showing Edward's bride as Mary Ann ROBERTS, but the death certificate for their son, Phillip R. DICKEY (10 May 1846-16 Feb 1930), gives his parents and Edward DICKEY and Mary Ann SILVEY [sic].
     There were, in fact, five SILVEY households listed in the 1840 census for Roane Co., TN: two John SILVEYs (p. 68, line 5 and p. 70, line 7), a William SILVEY (p. 70, line 10), and two Samuel SILVEYs (p. 68, line 16 and p. 70, line 11). the household of John SILVEY (p. 68, line 5) has a female of about the correct age (ca 20 years old) to have been the then unmarried Mary Ann SILVEY (listed as aged 30 in 1850, 40 in 1860, 50 in 1870, and 60 in 1880). None of the William SILVEY and Samuel SILVEY households have young woman listed of an appropriate age. Importantly, the three SILVEY households on p. 70 (John, Samuel and William) are on the same page as that of Robert Samuel ROBERTS, the father of the Mary Ann "Polly" ROBERTS, who married Edward C. DICKEY. Samuel DICKEY, the best candidate for the father of both Edward C. DICKEY and William Gillis DICKEY, is listed on the next page (p. 71, line 5) of the same 1840 Roane Co., TN census.
     There were eight SILVEY households listed in the 1830 census for Roane Co., TN: seven of these households on one page (p. 63 - Charles, John, Samuel, William Junior, William Senior, Samuel Senior and Polly. the eighth household, that of a second John SILVEY, is on the next page (p. 64). This listing proximity probably correlates with geographical proximity and implies that at least the severn SILVEY household on p. 63 are related. A Mary Ann SILVEY, who married Edward C. DICKEY, would have been about 10 years old in 1830. Of the eight SILVEY household listed, XX contain a female potentially of that age: John (p. 63), Samuel, William Junior, Samuel Senior, and John (p. 64). This does not help narrow the candidate for Mary Ann's father.
     There is one other SILVEY family tie that bears mentioning. Thomas SILVEY 9c1817-unk), the son of Samuel SILVEY (c1790-unk), had a daughter, Nancy Green SILVEY (1840-1883) who married William Monroe ROBERTS. The Mary Ann "Polly" ROBERTS, who married William Gillis DICKEY, was the sister of this William Monroe ROBERTS. family ties between the SILVEY and ROBERTS families of Roane Co. did exist. It is not impossible that the Mary Ann SILVEY/ROBERTS who married William Gillis' brother, Edward C. DICKEY, was actually a ROBERTS, but from a different ROBERTS household than that of William Monroe and his father, Robert Samuel Roberts. A closer analysis of the 1830 and 1840 census listings for other ROBERTS families in Roane Co. might shed some light on this. There were 12 ROBERTS households listed in Roane Co. in 1830 and 26 households listed there in 1840.
     Some Ancestry family trees show both William and Edward as the sons of Samuel and Sarah (Bradley) DICKEY. I believe that is a possibility. There were only two DICKEY households enumerated in Roane Co. in 1840, a Samuel (probably the oldest male in the household who is shown as aged 60-69) and a David H. (probably the oldest male in the household and who is shown as aged 30-39). It is Samuel DICKEY who is on the page (p. 71) following the ROBERTS AND SILVEY listings (p. 70) and is of an appropriate age to have been the father of Edward C. and/or William Gillis DICKEY. David H. DICKEY is several pages (and likely many miles) away in the enumeration (p. 56) and is too young to have been the father of either.
     Furthermore, I believe it is a possibility that the Mary A(nn) that married Edward C. DICKEY was Mary Ann SILVEY, possibly the daughter of Samuel SILVEY just mentioned. The 1840 Roane Co., TN census puts all three households (Robert Samuel ROBERTS, Samuel SILVEY, and Samuel DICKEY all in reasonable geographic proximity. The name on the image of the marriage record is clearly written as "Mary Ann Roberts". The mother's name on their son's death certificate is clearly written as "Mary A. Silvey". Typically, a primary contemporary record (original marriage record) trumps a much later record (death certificate). At this stage, I have no other explanation for the difference in maiden names unless she was a widow ROBERTS when she married Edward. Mary Ann was probably too young (ca 22 in 1842 when she married Edward) to have been the widow of a Mr. ROBERTS at that time, but it is not impossible.

Who was the correct William BLACKWELL and what was his Ancestry?
     I am convinced that two or more William Blackwells have been confused in the various online family trees that I have found. I am concerned to find the father of the David BACKWELL (c 1759-1841) who married Sarah HARRIS (c1765-bef 1806).
     "William-A": The William BLACKWELL whose will was dated 23 Nov 1774 had it witnessed by a Dabney HARRIS, who was the 1st cousin of Sarah HARRIS. Unfortunately, the will only lists two sons (naming William and Armistead as Executors) and simply says he leaves everything to his living children, without naming any other children. So this William has some link to the HARRIS family and is a possibility to be the father of Sarah's husband, David BLACKWELL. The will was probated in Albemarle Co., VA in March 1775. William-A names his wife as Sarah in his will.
     "William-B": Most of the online family trees (Ancestry.com, RootsWeb) who identify a William as the father of Sarah's husband, David, say that that William died 10 Aug 1772. The William who wrote the 1774 will obviously didn't die in 1772. Most of these family trees share the same date of death (10 Aug 1772), but some say William-B died in Albemarle Co., VA (where William-A probably died two or three years later), while others say he died in Fauquier Co., VA. Further records (including several Sons of the American Revolution) show that this William-B was married to an Elizabeth CRUMP, so not only did he die too early and in the wrong place to have been William-A, but he had the wrong wife.
     Thus, we have pretty clear evidence that two or more different Williams have been mixed. However, in spite of the number of different family trees that link David to this William-B - apparently ignoring or discounting the conflict in death dates (1772 versus 1774/5) and death locations (Albemarle vs Fauquier Co.), I haven't found any this William-B actually had a son named David, just as I haven't yet found proof that William-A had a son named David (even though he has a links to David's wife's family). He witnessed the beginning of military service of Capt. Robert Harris Jr. between 1776 and 1779 at Revolutionary War, Virginia, USA;      per SAR Application #46747 - Captain in Virginia Militia

     " Estate Book C, pages 284-286, Roane Co., Tennessee
     BLACKWELL, David - March Term 1842 -
     I, David Blackwell, do make and publish this as my last Will and Testament, hereby revoking and making void all other wills by me at anytime made.
First, I direct that my funeral expenses and all of my debts be paid me as soon after my death as possible, out of any moneys that I may die possessed of, or may first come into the hands of my Executors.
     Secondly, I do also give and bequeath unto my son, Hugh Blackwell, my upper tract of land where he now lives, by Hugh Blackwell, paying George W. Blackwell's heirs that he had (which George had) by his first Wife [Alsie Martin], Ninety-two dollars and fifty cents.
     I do also give and bequeath unto my daughter, Elizabeth [Blackwell Roberts], my part of the undivided Equity in Elias Roberts' deceased Old Tract of land, formerly called the claim of Edward Roberts, [to be] her lifetime [estate], and then to be equally divided between heirs of her body.
     I do give and bequeath unto my Daughter, Dicey [Diannah Blackwell Keith], the tract of land where I now live, by her paying Elizabeth [Blackwell Roberts] One Hundred dollars when collected. Elizabeth [Blackwell Roberts] is to have this One Hundred dollars, and at her death, if any left, to be equally divided between her heirs of her body.
     I do also give and bequeath unto Armistead Blackwell, George W. Blackwell, Hugh Blackwell, Patsy Davis, Nancy Sublett, Elizabeth Roberts and Dicey Blackwell all of my Negroes, except Priseller - My will is for her to be free; and household and kitchen furniture, with the live stock, if any on hand, all of which is to be equally divided between them all, except Armistead Blackwell's heirs - they are only to have one-child part to be equally divided between them all. Patsy Davis' heirs are only to have one-child part of said estate to be equally divided between them [all]. George W. Blackwell's heirs by his first wife are to have one- child part to be equally divided between them [all].
     It is my will that George W. Blackwell's second wife, Alfa [Barnett], is not to have any part of my Estate.
     Elizabeth Roberts' interest in my estate - she is to have it as long as she lives, and after her death to be equally divided between the heirs of her body.
     Dicy's [son?] William, is to have my Rifle gun; and lastly, as to all the residue and remainder of my personal Estate, of what kind and nature so ever, and for the executors of this, my last will and testament, I hereby nominate, constitute and appoint Hugh Blackwell, Brasher Roberts and John A. Sharp my sole executors, and in testimony whereof, I have hereto set my name and fixed my seal, this Eighteenth day of June 1840. Signed, sealed, published and delivered as the last will and testament of the testator in presence of us."
     David Blackwell was a slave owner, and had a son named Hugh Blackwell. David's son, George W., died before David Blackwell, so he mentions George's children as benficiaries, and specifically excludes George W.'s second wife from the will.^21,22
