     Death of Unit Rasin
     Mr. Unit Rasin, and old and well known citizen, died at about half past seven o'clock last evening at his residence, 1432 Poplar street, from general debility after an illness of about six weeks. He was 75 years of age.
     He was born on the eastern shores of Maryland and came to St. Louis in 1837. He was for years a member of the firm of Rasin and Cabanne, commission merchants. Mr. Rasin was favorably known by all the old residents and esteemed for his integrity and honesty. He knew many people and was a perfect repository of the local history of the city and state. In 1856, he was elected on of the aldermen of the Sixth ward. He was a director in the old State Bank of Missouri.
     He leaves a wife and four sons and five daughters. His two sons, Hanson and Thomas, were present at his death, while Joseph M. is living in Montana, and Mackall is absent in Oregon. His daughters, Eunice, wife of James Alfred Pearce of Chestertown, Md; Hattie, wife of Charles R. Woodin, of this city; Mary, wife of Thomas Horsey of Galena, Md; and two single daughters, Laura and Matilda, were all present at the house at the time of Mr. Rasin's death. ---St. Louis Globe-Democrat

     Henry E Jacobs (later Reverend, & son of Michael) lived at the corner/intersection of South Washington and West Middle Streets in Gettysburg during the battle in July 1863, not Chambersburg & Washington as in the description. There is even official sign with his picture in front of the house on West Middle (a block south of Chambersburg St).

     William H. Downing enlisted with the 49th Pennsylvania Volunteer Regiment in 1862. He was captured by Confederate forces in the fall of 1863, but escaped and returned to his regiment in January of 1864. He was killed in action during the battle of Spottsylvania Court House. A brother, Joseph B. Downing, and a cousin, Benjamin H. Downing, also members of his regiment, were both wounded at that battle but survived the war.
William was the son of Thomas Downing and Mary Lightfoot Downing. Letters that he wrote during the war survive and are in the archives of the Uwchlan Township, Pennsylvania, Historical Society.

He was promoted through the ranks ultimately to Captain. Wounded at the battle of Spottsylvania, VA., May 10, 1864. After the war he was a bookkeeper for a the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, but shortly after was a bookkeeper for a Philadelphia Bank.
Married 1st to Harriet Magruder who died in 1908, remarried in 1909 to Susan S. Smith. No issue of either marriage.
Letters that Joseph wrote to his sister, Sarah Downing, during the war survive, and are in the archives of the Uwchlan Township, Chester county, Pennsylvania, Historical Society.
