James Henry Vaught died on 22 February 1924 at Macon Co., Missouri, USA, at age 77.2,3
James Henry Vaught was buried after 22 February 1924 at Shelbina Cemetery, Shelbina, Shelby Co., Missouri, USA; from Find A Grave:
Birth:      May 19, 1846, Pulaski County, Kentucky, USA
Death:      Feb. 22, 1924, Macon County, Missouri, USA
James Henry Vaught. Civil War Union Veteran. Born in KY & Died in MO. Married Mary Elizabeth Pence in 1873 in KY. Eleven children were born to this couple: 5 sons & 6 daughters. James Henry Vaught has the distinction of being buried 2 times. Once at Mt. Tabor near Atlanta MO & secondly in Shelbina MO after the passing of his wife in 1933.
—One of the most unusual occurrences ever recorded in Shelbina was the burial side by side, Sunday, of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Vaught. The former died about ten years ago and was buried at Mt. Tabor, east of Atlanta. Because of the inaccessibility of his grave, the body was taken up and brought to Shelbina to be buried at the side of and at the same time of the burial of Mrs. Vaught, who had died Wednesday of last week.
—Mr. Vaught's body had been laid to rest in a steel vault and when it arrived in Shelbina the undertaker opened the casket finding the remains as perfectly preserved as the day it was first buried. All members of the family and many old acquaintances viewed the remains and were surprised at its preservation. (Many thanks to Pam Witherow)
     Obituary---Feb 22, 1924
James H. Vaught, well known former citizen of Shelbina, passed away Friday afternoon at the home of his son, J. W. Vaught, at Atlanta, Mo. Deceased was born May 19, 1846, being 77 years, 9 months and 3 days old at the time of his death. He was a Union soldier during the Civil War, serving nearly 4 years with the 19th Kentucky regiment. In December, 1872, he was married to Mary Elizabeth Pence, who was born and reared in this community.
Eleven children were born to them, being six girls and five boys. The eldest, Frances, died about 8 years ago. The 10 living children are John W., of Atlanta; James M. and Mrs. Pearl Scovil, of Kirksville; Chris and Wes on farms near here, E-h, Mrs. Ella Binns and Mrs. Marie Long, of Hannibal; Mrs. Martha Farris of Gibbs, and Mrs. Della Miller of Indianapolis. All were with him in his last sickness.
He had 21 grandchildren, G. G. Vaught of Shelbina, being one. There are also 3 great grandchildren. He was a farmer for many years near Shelbina and afterward lived many years in Shelbina, but has lately made his home with his son, John, at Atlanta. He became a member of the Christian church in 1906. The funeral services were held at Atlanta and the interment was at Mt. Tabor, 3 miles east of Atlanta. (Thanks to Joanne Scobee Morgan)
