     John McKenzie Reed was born in Hempstead County, Arkansas on 18 Sept 1844 to Watson Reed and Penelope Rebecca Black. In 1850 his family was living in Van Buren, Union, Arkansas. Sometime between 1850 and 1852, the family moved to Texas near the Brazos River where his brother, James Harvey Reed was born.
     At age 16 he was living in Claiborne Parish Louisiana, where his father was a cotton planter along the banks of the Red River. The Methodist minister, William Stevenson, from Washington, Hempstead, Arkansas was living here as well. More than likely, the family moved from Arkansas due to the slavery issue in the Methodist church. There was a division among the members as to the use of slaves. J. M. Reed fought as a confederate soldier in the Civil War.
     In 1873, J M Reed married Rosa Anna Hanna (1851-1918) in Freestone or Limestone County, Texas. He had moved to Bosque County, Texas by 1880 and by 1890 he had moved again to Navarro County, Texas.
     His wife Rosa, died in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, but J M Reed buried her in Little Rock, Arkansas in the Oakwood Cemetery. As of the 1920 census he is living with his daughter, Bertha Reed Vick in Little Rock, Arkansas as a widow. At his death, 20 August 1922, he was living with his son Earnest E Reed in Asheville, Buncombe, North Carolina and laid to rest at Oakland Cemetery in Little Rock, Arkansas.
