BIRTH     20 Oct 1928, Hall County, Texas, USA
DEATH     5 Mar 2017 (aged 88), Texas, USA
Gene Austin Hanna, 88, died peacefully in his sleep from heart failure on Sunday, March 5, 2017. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Dreamland Cemetery in Turkey, with the Rev. Ruben Trussell, pastor of First Baptist Church in Pecan Gap, officiating. Arrangements are by Adams Funeral Home of Wellington.
Gene was born October 20, 1928, in Turkey, Texas to William Earnest "Jack" Hanna and Lettie Jennie Hanna. Gene was the oldest of two boys. He attended school in Bridle Bits through the 10th grade, and game in to the call of being a cowboy at age 16. He went to work for Matador Land and Cattle Company and worked for two years before he met his future bride, Anna Lou Hulen, in early 1945 in Turkey. they were married on July 22, 1945. In July 2016, they celebrated 72 years of marriage.
Gene moved to Waco in 1946 to work with his dad at General Tire and Rubber Company for three years, working the night shift. In 1949, the call of being a cowboy was again too much and he returned to Turkey to work for Pitchfork Ranches. In April, Gene was able to get on with Mill Iron Ranches in Turkey. After nine years of working for the Turkey division, he was transferred to the Wellington division and became the Wellington, Texas division ranch foreman.
For 40 years, he cared for his family, loved God and raised some of the finest Hereford cattle in the country. In January, 1990, Gene retired from the ranch and moved to Sulphur Springs, where he planned to fish and run a few cows. That retirement lasted for about a year before he got tired of not being productive. Over the next 25 years, Gene continued to rope, ride, work with cattle, play dominoes and drive a dump truck, until he was no longer able to do so. The last two years of his life, he finally slowed down and sat in the rocking chair, "hating" every minute of it. He lived by a simple set of rules - "love God, respect your elders and always tell it like it is."
Gene was a member of First Baptist Church in Brashear.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Lettie; his younger brother Marvel Dean "Bud" Hanna; and the first of six children, Wanda Jean Hanna, who was born April 29, 1946, and died November 27, 1949.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol Ann Trussell of Pecan Gap and Mary Lou Brown of Wellington; three sons, Jeffery William Hanna of Brady, Paul Gene Hanna of Wellington and Matthew Ward Hanna of Sulphur Springs; 20 grandkids; 30 great-grandkids; and six great-great grandchildren. ** Amarillo Globe-News March 9, 2017
