      ; Thomas Smedley received a certificate from Chester to Concord, March 24,1758, probably as an apprentice, and brought one back to Chester Aug. 29,1763. He presented an acknowledgment to the meeting, April 24, 1780, forpaying part of a fine for not bearing arms, and also part of a tax forthe support of war. He was appointed, Jan. 27, 1783, one of the trusteesof Providence Meeting and graveyards, and on Dec. 28, 1789, to have theoversight of burials, with Samuel Malin. He was appointed overseer ofProvidence Meeting, Feb. 22, 1790, in place of Roger Dicks, and, beingdeceased, was succeeded by Richard Nuzum, May 30, 1791 His father devised to him a piece of land in Middletown, on the southside of 'the great road,' and half the lot in Philadelphia. His brothersJames and Ambrose were each to pay him ?? when they came into possessionof their lands, and in case of James's death in his minority the 98 acresof land in Upper Providence devised to him, should pass to Thomas. Thisdid happen and Thomas settled upon the land in Upper Providence. March25, 1774. Thomas Smedley, of Upper Providence, carpenter, conveyed toJoseph Moore, of the city of Philadelphia, cordwainer, his undividedhalf interest in the city lot. Elizabeth Smedley, widow of Thomas and hersurviving children, entered into an agreement with Leavin Cornish, June24, 1815, to convey to him a piece of land in Middletown, formerlybelonging to Thomas Smedley, deceased.
