Larry tells about how he obtained the Bible in documentation for his application for the SAR (Sons of the American Revolution). It provided information on our ancestor William Reid who was a Patriot in the Revolutionary War. In addition, William's father Joseph and brother Nathaniel Reid were soldiers in the Rev. War.

"THE REID FAMILY IN NORTH AMERICA
"The writing of this chapter was really not possible until my cousin, Mann on Brooks McClure, found a very old Reid family Bible while going through her many papers and memorabilia. Since she does not carry the name of Reid (her aunt, Keturah Brooks, mar-ried my great grandfather, William Massie Reid) she wanted me to have it. Mannon passed away Sunday night October 17, 2004 just five days short of her 101 birthday.
The Bible establishes the Reid family’s Scottish roots. These roots are further explained in a book written by Elizabeth Reid Austin and Helen Reid Roberts who tell the story of how and why Joseph Reid came to the North American colonies of the English empire in 1746. Unfortunately, there are pages missing from the Bible. How many I do not know. The notation at the bottom of several pages indicates that there are other pages with family information on them, but there are no more pages. Here is the story of the Reids in North America as I have been able to determine it from the family Bible and many other sources. I have relied extensively upon the help and research of others who have spent their own time and resources in establishing many facts, places, and circumstances that establish our connection to these early Reids. I have documented my sources where I felt appropriate.
"Sir Thomas Reid lived his entire life in Inverness-Shire, Scotland. His name places him squarely in the Robertson Clan (Donnachaidh in Gaelic). The Clan Robinson/ Donnachaidh is composed of many families including Duncan, McInroy, Stark, Collier, and the largest sept, Reid . He was knighted by the king, as was his son, Joseph Reid. Joseph was also born in Inverness-Shire. Sir Joseph Reid was exiled to the North American colonies after the 1745 Jacobite uprising in Scotland. Sir Joseph and his father had been strong supporters of the restoration of the Stuart Family (Bonnie Prince Charlie) to the English throne . After the Scots were defeated at the battle of Culloden in 1746, the English exiled many of these rebellious Scots in an effort to break up the Clans and to control the unruly ones left behind. Anyone interested in the social and cultural conditions in Scotland during this turbulent time may do so by reading any good history of Scotland during the 18th cen-tury. It is important here to only know that Sir Joseph Reid was exiled to the North American colonies. He eventually settled in Augusta County, Virginia about 1746. The part of Augusta County in which he settled would become Botetourt County in 1770 . In 1771 William Reid is mentioned in Chalkley’s Chronicles where the author is describing the location of land purchased by Francis Patton as being at the “corner William Reid, Robert Terrol” . In 1778 both Joseph and William are named in Morton’s “A History of Rockbridge County, Virginia” . He brought his wife, Anne Gordon, and his young son, Nathaniel Reid, with him. Soon after settling in Augusta County, Anne gave birth to another son, William Reid, December 14, 1746 . Anne was obviously expecting during the eight-week trip to the new world. Not much is known about William and his parents in their new home. We do know that Nathaniel Reid, William’s brother and Joseph’s oldest son, married Elizabeth Clayton June 5, 1761, Augusta County, Virginia. Nathaniel and Elizabeth had five children. William married Jane Anderson in Augusta County, Virginia March 10, 1765. William and Jane had eight children. Five of these children are listed in Joseph’s family Bible. Eight children are listed in William’s last will and testament; the five children mentioned in the family Bible plus three additional child."4 Sir Thomas Reid was a mentioned with Joseph Reed; REID Family Bible downloaded from Howard Family Tree on Ancestry.com.5 GAV-8.
; Joseph's marriage was held at his house.1

Son of Nathaniel and Isabella Reid. Ambrose married Elizabeth Allen.
From "The Nathan Reids of Virginia": Ambrose's tract of land was in Pickens County on Oolenoy Creek adjoining the land of James H. Auchler (?), Cornelius Keith and others, containing 462 acres more or less.............Ambrose Reid, who with much pride built his home of hewn logs, notched and pegged at the corners, in the Oolenoy Valley, Pickens County, South Carolina in 1812. This was the year he married Elizabeth Allen. After 20 years....she died on April 5, 1832, by an illness of ten hours. He, feeling deeply the loss of her, began to carve her tombstone. He had dressed, polished, shaped and carved other soap stones and made quaint markers in the Oolenoy Cemetery, but he carved each letter of this tombstone with special care.......the inscription "When death comes, the truest lovers must part"
