Benjamin ROBERTS did indeed have a son named Benjamin ROBERTS, Jr., but he was too old to be the Benjamin ROBERTS who m. Mary DULANEY.
     Several Ancestry Tree show this younger Benjamin ROBERTS to have been the son of a Joseph and Elizabeth (SIMS) ROBERTS, but these trees have only moderate documentation.
N.B.: Many family trees give the wife of Benjamin Roberts (1782-1860) as "Mary DULANEY" (probably on DAR lineage #103831). However, many other trees say she was Mary Ellen "Polly" GIBBS. I do not believe she was a DULANEY. GIBBS is more feasible, given that she was born in KY (and not VA).

This indenture made this 20th of August 1768 between James Sims, Sr., of Culpeper County of the one part and George Sims, son of the said James Sims of the County of Louisa of the other part. Witnesseth that James Sims, Sr., in consideration of the natural love and affection that he bears to his son George Sims, hath given by these presents unto him all that tract of land whereon the said James Sims, Sr., now lives lying in the said county and bounded as follows; beginning at 3 pines on Devil’s Run at Dr. Thomas Houison’s corner and runs on his line South 80° East 140 pole to a pine, a white oak and a chestnut near a corner of the said Houison’s, thence South 21° West 120 poles to a pine and white oak, thence North 80° West 140 poles to a small pine, the side of Devil’s Run, thence down the meanders of the said run to the first station, it being part of the 400 acres of land that was granted to William Lucas by deed from the proprietors office bearing the date the 28th day of September 1738 and by him sold and conveyed to John Gent, and by the said Gent sold and conveyed to James Sims, Sr. and containing by estimation 100 acres; also one other tract of land adjoining the said tract and bounded as follows; beginning at a willow oak and pine on Devil’s Run near the bridge, thence up the road North 32° West 92 poles to 3 pines on the road in Houison’s line, thence with his line North 83° East 106 poles to 5 pines on the north side of Devil’s Run, thence up the several meanders thereof to the beginning, containing by estimation 29 acres. THIS INDENTURE made this (blank) day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred & Eighty seven by and between WILLIAM BROWN and AMEY his Wife of the County of Culpeper of one part and JAMES SIMS SENR. of the County afsd. of the other part; Witnesseth that WILLIAM BROWN and AMEY his Wife in consideration of the just sum of Thirty pounds currt. money of Virginia to him in hand paid, by these presents do sell unto the said SIMS his heirs a certain tract or parcel of land and every thing thereunto belonging containing One hundred acres lying in County of Culpeper and BRUMFIELD Parish and bounded; Begining at a Percimon and Chesnut corner to JOHN PITCHER [Pilcher] on the South side of a Branch, & runing thence N. 70 W. 134 poles to three Pines to CHARLES HOLDWAY, thence So. 12 W. 120 poles to a Pine and Chesnut in JOSEPH JAMES line, then with his line So. 70 Et. 134 poles to a Maple and white Oak, corner to PITCHER, then No. 12 E. 112 poles to the begining; Together with all houses inclosures water courses profits and Emoluments to the same belonging and all Estate right and title of said WILLIAM BROWN and AMEY his Wife in and to the one hundred acres of land; To have and to hold the one hundred acres of land with the appurtenances thereunto belonging to said JAMES SIMS SENR. his heirs, And WILLIAM BROWN and AMEY his Wife our heirs and assigns the said tract of land to said JAMES SIMS SENR. his heirs shall warrant and forever defend by these presents against all persons whatsoever, the said tract of land freed and discharged of and from all debts or sales whatsoever; In Witness whereunto we the said WM.
