U.S. Judge Eastern District, Tennessee
Bio and Obituary
George C. Taylor, 67, retired United States district judge for the eastern district of Tennessee, died today of a heart ailment. Taylor, who occupied the East Tennessee district bench longer than any other judge, retired in 1949 several months after being stricken with a heart attack while conducting court at Greeneville, Tenn. A native of Greenville, Taylor studied law at the University of Tennessee, graduating in 1908.
He practiced law at Rockwood and at Greeneville and in 1921 was appointed U.S. attorney for East Tennessee. Seven years later, Taylor was appointed district judge and was sworn in on a commission dated May 29, 1928, on his 43rd birthday. He held the position until his retirement in 1949.
A Republican, Taylor managed Carroll Reece's first campaign for Congress in 1920. Reece was elected, defeating Sam R. Sells for the First District seat in the house.
Taylor was perhaps most widely known as the judge who issued the first government injunction under the national emergency clause of the Taft-Hartley Act. It enjoined an AFL union and a Government contractor at Oak Ridge, Tenn., from a walkout or lockout at an atomic energy plant for an 80-day "cooling off" period.
Heavy set, with a ruddy face and blue eyes, he created a genial atmosphere in his court. He was widely known for his wit.
Judge Taylor's years on the bench were busy ones as he handled heavy dockets in Chattanooga, Knoxville and Greenville. In 1939 his district was split and Leslie R. Darr became one of two judges for the East Tennessee district. With the appointment of Judge Darr, Judge Taylor became chief judge of the district. : In practice Judge Taylor regularly held the courts at Knoxville and Judge Darr at Greeneville, Winchester.
Not infrequently, however, each judge by interchange held court in the division of the other. President Truman accepted Judge Taylor's request for retirement in October, 1948., and named Robert Taylor, Johnson City lawyer and a Democrat, to succeed him.
Judge Taylor was for many years a trustee of the University of Tennessee. He also was a trustee of Tusculum College at Greeneville, a Mason, a member of the American and Tennessee Bar associations and of Knoxville's Second Presbyterian Church.
The judge's principal hobbies were hunting and fishing. He kept a kennel of bassets, beagles and bird dogs on his small farm near here.
Taylor is survived by his widow, the former Luetta Gregg; a daughter, Mrs. Tim Manson, wife of a Chattanooga physician; a son, Jerome G. Taylor, Knoxville attorney; two sisters, Miss Olive Taylor, Johnson City, and Miss Mary Taylor, New York City; and two nieces, Mrs. H. M. Shoemaker and Mrs. Lewis P. Thatcher, both of Signal Mountain. Funeral will be at 4 p.m., Sunday with burial in a Knoxville cemetery.

Robert Ingersoll Ingalls, Sr. founded Ingalls Iron Works in Titusville, Birmingham, Alabama in 1910. He founded Ingalls Shipbuilding in 1938, which became the largest privately owned steel manufacturer in the South and the largest shipyard on the Gulf Coast.
In 1937, Ingalls started a shipyard in Decatur, Alabama. To accommodate the needs of the navy during the Second World War, it was moved to Birmingham, then to Chickasaw, Alabama, and finally to Pascagoula, Mississippi. By the time of his death, the company was worth $40 million.
Ingalls established the Ingalls Foundation in 1943. Among other causes, the foundation funded the Ellen Gregg Ingalls Award for Excellence in Classroom Teaching at Vanderbilt University.
Ingalls' son, Robert Ingersoll Ingalls, Jr. (1906–1968), inherited 90% of Ingalls Industries. He sold the company to Litton Industries in 1961, which was purchased by Northrop Grumman in 2001.
The Robert I. Ingalls, Sr. Hall (1957) on the campus of Samford University in Homewood, Alabama is named in his honor and is home to the McWhorter School of Pharmacy.

Robert Randolph Meyer was a hotel manager and founder of the Robert Meyer Hotels company, which he modeled after the Statler Hotels chain. As an experienced hotelier, Meyer was brought in to consult on the opening of Birmingham's Tutwiler Hotel in 1914. Meyer's "Robert Meyer Hotels" management portfolio included the Winecoff Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia; the Hotel Windsor and Hotel Roosevelt in Jacksonville, Florida, the Hotel Stacy-Trent in Trenton, New Jersey; the Abraham Lincoln Hotel in Reading, Pennsylvania; the Hotel Sir Walter in Raleigh, North Carolina; the Emerson Hotel in Baltimore, Maryland; the Farragut Hotel in Knoxville, Tennessee; and the Hermitage Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee.
Meyer purchased a home in the Jemison Company's Valley View subdivision on Altamont Road in 1917 and commissioned a major remodeling. The Meyer residence was one of the first private homes in Birmingham to have its own swimming pool. Meyer purchased a group of paintings of Civil War scenes commissioned from Gilbert Gaul by the Southern Art Publishing Company in Nashville, Tennessee. Those works were later donated to the Birmingham Museum of Art.
He purchased the Metropolitan Hotel before 1920. In November 1922, Meyer married the widowed Birmingham Age-Herald publisher Lewis Barrett. A year later, Presbyterian minister Henry Edmonds convinced Meyer to provide the funding to establish the Children's Fresh Air Farm.
Meyer had two sons, Robert Jr, who died in New Guinea during World War II, and Jack.
Meyer created the Robert R. Meyer Foundation at First National Bank of Birmingham in 1942. The foundation has supported numerous local institutions, including Southern Research, the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, the Birmingham Zoo, and the Meyer Planetarium at Birmingham-Southern College.
