Death: (1,3) Will dtd 4 Mar 1779, proved 20 Feb 1787, Augusta Co., VA. (6) Will dtd 1787, probated 1789 at Staunton, VA. Burial: (3) Said to have been buried in the old cemetery near the Old Stone Church, Augusta Co., VA. (2,3g) Scotch Presbyterian who came from Ulster, Ireland, to the Port of Philadelphia. (2) Came with wife Jean (Jane), and daughters Esther, Mary, and Margaret. (2,3) Lived in Lancaster Co., PA. (2,3) Probably lived in Chester Co., PA, East Nottingham Twp. about 1736-1738. (7a) 1737, 28 Feb: John ANDERSON patented 100 acres of land in Lancaster Co., PA. (3) c.1738: (3c) Four brothers, John, James, George and William ANDERSON settled in the Old Stone Church neighborhood of Augusta Co., VA. They were among the first settlers of Augusta Co. and came from PA. (6) Probably came to VA from PA with the first wave of Scotch-Irish immigration which followed in the wake of John LEWIS, the pioneer settler of Augusta Co., VA. Seven or eight heads of families who bore the name of ANDERSON were among the earliest settlers of Augusta Co., VA. Whether related to each other in any degree is not definitely known, but four of them, John, George, William and James, settled in the Stone Church neighborhood and are believed to have been brothers. The other ANDERSON referred to settled on Borden's grant in what is now Rockbridge Co. and are not believed to have been related to those who located on or near Middle River in Augusta Co. (2) 1738, 3 Jun: Acquired by grant 747 acres in Augusta Co., VA, believed to be a farm on Middle River, where the Valley turnpike crosses. (4) Settled in the area of the Augusta Stone Church, Fort Defiance, Augusta Co., VA, at Verona. (6) 1738, 5 Jun: William BEVERLY deeded to John ANDERSON 748 acres which is believed to have been the home farm upon which he lived and died. This land is located in Middle River at the crossing by the Valley turnpike and the Valley railroad. That portion of his estate where he resided was later the property of Andrew BOWLING. (3) The brothers John, James, George and William ANDERSON received from King George II grants of large tracts of land in Augusta Co., VA, as early as 1738. (7) 1738: He bought 740 acres of land from William BEVERLEY on Middle River, 7 miles NE of present Staunton, VA. (3g) 1740, 22 May: George ANDERSON came into Orange Co., VA court and saith, that he imported himself, Elizabeth his wife, William, Margaret and John and Francis ANDERSON from Ireland to Philadelphia, and from thence into this Colony. (3e) The John ANDERSON imported by George was probably not his brother because the latter proved his own importation before the Orange Co., VA court for himself, wife Jean (Jane) and his daughters Esther, Mary and Margaret, and George's son John was not born until 1746. The imported John must have been his father, who may have died in PA, or he may have come to Augusta Co., and if he did not acquire real property in VA, did not have an estate to be settled. (NOTE: This argument is flawed because the fact that John proved his own imporation is no proof that he is not the same one imported by George. It was common practice in VA imporation claims to claim the same people more than once, and those claimed by another often went on to make their own claims. See notes under early Tidewater VA immigrants.) (5) 1740, 10 Jun: John ANDERSON was granted 400 acres on a branch of North River of Shanando, called Anderson's Branch. (6) 1742: A soldier in Capt. John SMITH's Co. of militia, Augusta Co., VA. (5,6) 1745, 9 Dec: (7) 1745: (5,6,7) At the formation of Augusta Co., VA, John ANDERSON one of the first justices of the county court. (5) 1747, 17 Sep: John ANDERSON and Jane his wife deed to Charles CAMPBELL, farmer, for 50 pounds current money of VA, 400 acres on a branch of North River of Shenando, called Anderson's branch, granted to John, 10 Jun 1740. Teste: James PORTEUS and Benj. JOHNSTON. Acknowledged, 17 Sep 1747. (6) 1756: A soldier in Capt. CHRISTIAN's company of milita, Augusta Co., VA. (5) 1770, Mar: A judgement was recorded in the Augusta Co., VA court in the case of John ANDERSON, assignee of Robert ANDERSON and George ANDERSON, vs. Christian BINGAMAN, for debt. Writ issued Aug 1766. Bond dyd 8 Jul 1764. Assigned by George ANDERSON 10 Jul 1765. Assigned by Robert ANDERSON 19 Apr 1766. (6) 1772: Joan POAGE conveyed 27 acres of land upon which the old Stone Church stands to the Rev. John CRAIG and the session of the church. John ANDERSON is named in the deed next after Parson CRAIG. From that it is inferred that he was one of the first Elders of Old Stone Church, Ft. Defiance, VA. His son-in-law Capt. James ALLEN was also named as a member of the session, and 3 or 4 names are listed between him and John ANDERSON. James ALLEN is known to have been an elder as early as 1746. The fact that John ANDERSON preceeds him in the deed indicates he was not only the senior elder of the church at that time, but one of the first elders originally elected. (3) The ANDERSON brothers were staunch supported of the Old Stone Church as long as they lived. (1) Later was President of Augusta Stone Church. (5) 1773, May: John ANDERSON vs. S. MATHEWS, Mathew and James LOCKHART, Augusta Co., VA court. Chancery write dated 29 Jun 1769. James LOCKHART was Sampson MATHEWS' father-in-law in 1765. Orator became joint security with MATHEWS on bond of James LOCKHART and Randall LOCKHART for collection of public levy in 1765. Sometime after securities asked G. JONES and P. HOG to liquidate the account of the LOCKHARTs, when a considerable defalcation was found. Patrick LOCKHART was son to James. James ALLEN was son-in-law of John ANDERSON. Robert BRATTPN, aged 60 years, 20 May 1772. Silas HART, aged 50 years and upwards, 20 May 1772. Randall LOCKHART was son to James. William CROW, aged 30 years and upwards, 22 Aug 1772. James ALLEN's deposition taken in Botetourt, 1771. Hugh ALLEN was James' brother. (1a,3i,5) 1779, 4 Mar: John ANDERSON wrote his will. Left to wife Jane the mare called the Carolina mare. Named son William, in case he return from his journey. Left to his son Andrew a tract adjoining John PATTERSON. Names sons Robert, James. Names John, infant son of son William. Names sons-in-law James ALLEN, William CRAIG. Executors, sons James and Andrew. Teste: James ANDERSON, James BLAIR, George ANDERSON. (6) Wrote his will in 1787. (NOTE: This is the date it was proved.) (5a) 1782, 1 Jun: On Long Glade patented to John ANDERSON and became property of MUSTOE and CHAMBERS, 27 acres patented to Samuel ANDERSON. (5) 1788, 21 Oct: Augusta Co., VA deed: Samuel ANDERSON and Sarah, wife of Samuel, heir-at-law of his son, James ANDERSON Jr., deceased, to Anthony MUSTOE and Wm. CHAMBERS, on Long Glade, 200 acres devised to said James by his grandfather, James ANDERSON Sr., and conveyed to James Sr. by John ANDERSON, 17 Feb 1762; 34 acres patented to Samuel ANDERSON, 1 Jun 1782. (5) 1785, 25 Jun: John ANDERSON deed to his son Andrew ANDERSON, Augusta Co., VA. Delivered: William ANDERSON, the present owner, 8 Jul 1815. (1a,5) 1786, 17 May: Wrote codicil to his will, transfering slaves from son James to son Andrew. Teste: James and George ANDERSON. (1a,3i,5) 1787, 20 Feb: His will was proved, Augusta Co., VA, by James and George ANDERSON. (5) Andrew ANDERSON qualified as executor. (6) 1789: Will probated at Staunton, VA. (5a) 1790, 19 Oct: Andrew and Martha ANDERSON and James and Margaret ALLEN deed to John GRINER, Augusta Co., VA, part of a tract patented to John ANDERSON, dec'd, and by him conveyed in his lifetime to Andrew and James.1 GKJ-6.
