Richard Gilbert1

Richard Gilbert married Rose (?)1,2
; Richard Gilbert was transported by Leonard Calvert, Esq. in 1633 and from a strict interpretation of the records there are no indications of his entering the Province in the capacity of a servant. It is definitely the story of an adventurer leaving his young wife and children in England on a trial voyage to a new land, with the apparent promise of returning and bringing them over if conditions proved favourable. His return voyage was undoubtedly on one of the early ships which touched at St. Mary's City, for he was back in the Province by 1637 at the latest. His seat was in St. Mary's Hundred.
He financed his second passage and those of his wife, Rose, their two children, Grace and Elizabeth, and he likewise brought two contracted servants-Walter Waterling and Thomas Thomas, with hopes of starting life anew as a gentleman planter. His ambitions and plans were thwarted, however, by an untimely death before 1638, leaving a widow and two small children in a strange land.
It is well to place him as a member of the minor gentry, for true it is that no instrument is extant to prove whether he was lettered, but his wife had definitely received early training in the art of writing, an accomplishment not always accorded the daughters of even the esquires. She signed her name in all instances and was born in or about 1609. While she was not accorded the title of Madam or Mrs. in after life, it was perhaps due to her marriage with a member of the yeomanry-at least her second husband always made his mark.
Shortly after her first husband's death, Leonard Calvert sued the Widow Gilbert for certain goods and commodities sold her husband, to which she replied in court on January 20, 1637/8, that the obligation had partially been paid, but then lacked the means to remit the balance, but she would do so whenever possible.1
Within a short time or on November 23, 1638, Robert Smith, Planter, announced his intentions at court of marrying the widow and that he "is not precontracted to any other woman than Rose Gilbert and that there is noe Inpediment of Consanquinty affinity nor any other lawfull Impediment".
Thereafter her life became connected with that of her second husband, but she had two daughters whose father was one of those Adventurers who dared cross the ocean in 1633 to aid in the establishing a new State. And unless the two daughters of Richard Gilbert died young or were greatly deformed, they had no difficulty in finding mates at that period in Maryland history.
While documentary proof is lacking, but circumstantial evidence keen and ripe, it is believed that Elizabeth Gilbert, the elder daughter, married William Asbeston, and Grace, the younger daughter, married Walter Waterling who as a youth was brought over by her father in the same ship with her.
Robert Smith was rewarded by marrying the widow of Richard Gilbert and acquired the land rights of Gilbert as well as those of Gilbert's family and the two servants. And the land which he acquired was not devised to his step-children at his death but to his own progeny.2

; Proof that this is Anne, dau of Tristram Thomas and Ann Coursey. On 13 July 1702, William Thurlo, Gent., and his wife Ann (my note: Ann Coursey married 2nd William Thurloe) conv. to his son (my note: really son-in-law) and heir Arthur emory, all of Emory's Fortune on Morgan's Creek, and other land. TALR 9: 125. Also, THE THOMAS FAMILY OF ENGLAND, MARYLAND, NORTH CAROLINA, DESCENDANTS OF 'REV.' TRISTRAM THOMAS Through his Great Grandson CHRISTOPHER THOMAS (THE EMIGRANT 1635), compiled by Mrs. Therold (Louise) Heiselman. In this case, the subject of the excerpt is Tristram Thomas (Jr.) (d. 1746), son of Tristram Thomas (abt 1733-1686) and Ann Coursey. P. 4 - 'At the time of his death, Trististram Thomas apparently owned 'Hawkins Pharsalia' the 200 acres he had bought from Thomas Thomas in 1726, and 33 acres of 'Alcock's Pharsalia', which he must have bought at another time, plus the homestead he lived on which apparently was part of the original tract of 'Trustram' not sold to Arthur Emory in1723. 'Tristram's sister Anne Thomas had been born at 'Trustram' about 1677. She had married Arthur Emory about 1701 and had died November 10, 1721. They had seven children one of which was Arthur Emory, Jr. 'Tristram Thomas died in 1746. We have his will. Trustram wrote his will 13 Dec. 1745 and it was probated 4 March 1745/6. His name was written Trustram in his will and many of his records.' And more proof: In the 'Mark King Family' document that may be interpreted to support the marriage of Arthur, Jr., to Anne Thomas. This is the will of Juliana (Thomas) King, widow of John King, son of Marke King and Anne Smith. John King was married to Juliana Thomas, daughter of Tristram Thomas and Anne Coursey and sister of Ann Thomas. It states 'The Exec. was bro. Arthur Emory'. Well, Arthur Emory WAS NOT her 'brother', but HE WAS her 'brother-in-law'! I am betting that, in fact, this is referring to her 'brother-in-law', Arthur Emory, Jr. This supports the conclusion that Ann Thomas was the wife of Arthur Emory, Jr. The key sentence in the above paragraph is: 'Tristram's sister Anne Thomas had been born at 'Trustram' about 1677. She had married Arthur Emory about 1701 and had died November 10, 1721. They had seven children one of which was Arthur Emory, Jr'. And more proof: Ffrom the written accounts (MD Archives) of Trustram Thomas in 1708. Although the date is well after his death, I think that it still refers to Tristram who married Anne Coursey. Nevertheless, this account entry appears to settle the question of who Anne Thomas married.
