Elizabeth Beck owned 170 acres from 1736-1776 and Christopher Wilkinson owned 170 acres from 1736-1747. Not sure how Christopher got half the land, he may have purchased from Isabel.

      ; A record sent to me by William Utermohlen shows John Beck being charged with
fornication with Rebecca Whaley in Nov 1762. He was late of Kent County planter
being a single man and unmarried on date of offense Nov 10 1759. John Beck
pled guilty and was fined 30 shillings, Joseph Whaley planter gave bond that
John Beck would indemnify the county from any charge due to the child. John's
mother gave him the least in her will and stated he would get nothing else
which may mean she was mad at him for this behavior.⁴

; ROBERT SMITH, PLANTER: There are reasons to believe and sufficient circumstantial evidence to accept that Robert Smith who later settled in Talbot County was one of the Adventurers on the Ark and the Dove. He was a freeman of St. Mary's Hundred by January 1637/8, when he gave his proxy to Francis Rabnet, but he later spoke of his having performed service in the Province. Inasmuch as the indentureship of the men and boys on the Ark and the Dove was for three or four years, it would indicate that he had just completed his service in 1637 and was accorded the rights of a freeholder. If he were not an Adventurer on that memorable voyage, then he apparently came in the second ship during December 1634.

On November 3, 1638, he declared his intentions of marrying Rose Gilbert, the widow of Richard Gilbert, Planter. By his timely marriage with the widow, he was rewarded, for he acquired by law all the rights and interests which his wife held in the estate of her late husband, which formed the nucleus of the 600-acre plantation acquired by Gilbert on the Eastern Shore.

He was apparently not interested in civic and political affairs, for there is no record of his exercising his privilege of attending the General Assemblies. As mentioned above, Francis Rabnet held his proxy at the 1637/8 Assembly, in 1641 Thomas Baldridge, and in 1642 Captain Thomas Cornwalys. During his domicile in St. Mary's County his plantation lay first in St. Mary's Hundred which undoubtedly consisted of a few hundred acres on one of the private or public manors. Later he held a leasehold on Governor Calvert's Manor of Trinity, when in 1646 his rent of 6 bbls. or corn and 12 capons for 100 acres was in arrears.1

In 1642 Captain Cornwalys sued him, Thomas Yewell and Steven Thomas for trespass upon "St. Jerome's Manor" and the shooting of game in violation of the ancient English game laws. The manor had been granted to Jerome Hawley, Esq., but Captain Cornwalys was in possession as the executor of the estate.

At a court held in 1643 he and others were summoned to show cause why they had failed to contribute to the maintenance of the garrison at Fort Conquest on Palmer's Island, according to their written agreement.3

While he swore fealty to Governor Calvert as Lord of Trinity Manor and was subject to the laws of the manor, he himself maintained a staff of servants. One of his labourers was William Stephenson who sued him for 500 lbs. tob. and 3 bbls. of corn as his annual wages. Stephenson was deceased by March 1652, when Robert Smith demanded 200 lbs. tob. from Humphrey Attwicks, the administrator of Stephenson's estate.

It has been mentioned elsewhere that in 1654 he gave a heifer to Elizabeth, the wife of William Asbiston, whom he styled as daughter. On this occasion Robert Smith made his mark, while William Asbiston wrote his name.

At a court held at St. Mary's on November 6, 1651, Rose Smith, his wife, deposed to be 42 years of age and appeared as a witness in the "domestic relation" affair of Robert Holt whose wife had threatened to murder him. Goodie Smith stated that she was at the house of Robert Holt, when Goodie Holt unburdened herself to her. Goodie Holt stated, "She were as good kill him as live as She did". Thereupon, Rose Smith cautioned her of the penalty of hanging to which she replied "Then there was an end of two". The husband and wife apparently separated and at a Visit paid Rose Smith at her house, she advised "Dorothy Holt" to return to her husband again telling her "What a Covenant She made at their marriage that thereby She could not with Safe Conscience go from her husband". Thereupon, the troubled wife replied "That her heart was soe hardened against him that She would never darken his door again".6

Rose Smith was furthermore a member of the all-woman jury in 1656 which tried Judith Catchpole for the murder of her new-born child. She was living as late as 1658 when she, her husband Robert Smith, and William Ashbiston were summoned to testify at court.7

Goodie Smith also knew the art of mid-wifery and officiated at the delivery of a premature boy of Goodie Brooke whose husband, Francis Brooke, was apparently no saint. The birth was prematurely brought on by the brutal beating of his wife with a pair of tongs. Elizabeth Claxton testified that when the child was delivered, it was all bruised and that Rose Smith lectured him, but he established an alibi and stated that his wife fell out of a peach tree. Under the duress of her husband, the distressed wife agreed, but Brooke was ultimately tried of "Suspition of Murther" and convicted. Rose Smith signed her name at court on this occasion.8

On February 28, 1649/50, some 17 years after his arrival in the Province, Robert Smith demanded his first land grant. He requested 50 acres "for his service to the Lordship," 100 acres for Thomas Thomas brought in by Mr. Pasmore 15 years since, 300 acres in right 0f Rose his wife formerly the wife of Richard Gilbert being for the transportation of the said Gilbert, his wife, and Elizabeth and Grace his children, and 100 acres by assignment from Walter Waterling. Tile latter 100 acres were for the freedom of the said Waterling and 50 acres for a maid servant.9 Accordingly, 550 acres of land were ordered to be laid out for Robert Smith on the Patuxent.

Apparently, the Patuxent plantation was never actually patented, for in 1659 Robert Smith was granted 600 acres of land on the east side of the Chesapeake Bay on St. Michael's River and Morgan's Creek in the name of "Smeath" . . . "due to him by marrying Rose the relict of Richard Gilbert . . . the land being due to the said Richard Gilbert for transporting himself and tile said Rose, Grace and Elizabeth, her daughters, Walter Waterling and Thomas Thomas his servants.10 Then another conflicting record shows that "Smeath" was granted to Robert Smith for transporting himself, Elizabeth his daughter, Richard Gilbert, Thomas Thomas, Thomas Wills and Patrick Frizzel his servants. This was in the year 1666 or thereabouts, so it was apparently a reaffirmation or confirmation.'1

The several warrants contradict themselves, but the first approach in 1649 when Robert Smith declared 50 acres due him for service is undoubtedly the more authentic. Ultimately, he settled at "Smeath" on St. Michael's River which eventually fell into Talbot County.

In 1660 Robert Smith, who made his mark, and his wife Rose writing her name, gave Elizabeth Brooke, the daughter of Francis Brooke "one Grisell Sow with pigg", as witnessed by David Seely and Marke King, though it was not recorded at court until 1664.12 On June 15, 1669, Robert Smith had the age of his servant, John Riding, adjudged at court.13

There is a reference in 1649 to a calf given to "one of the said Smith's children" by John Hilliard, thereby establishing proof that he had more than one child.14 His will is rather ambiguous, naming only one child, one grandchild, and devising land to several King orphans. The instrument, dated May 4, 1671, was probated in Talbot County on December 19, following, by Thomas Jackson and Edward Tomlins.15

Residue of land was to be divided into three parts and given to the following as they came of age-Robert Walters, John King and James Symonds son of Thomas.

In no instance did he name the land; they were evidently various farms on "Smeath". His name docs not appear upon the deed index of neither Kent nor Talbot Counties as a grantor or grantee.

William Coursey and Tristam Thomas were appointed executors, but it seems as if William Coursey was the one to officiate. At a court held in Talbot County on November 9, 1672, Mr. William Coursey, the administrator of Robert Smith, acknowledged judgment for a cow and calf due Mary King.16 And on September 16, 1673, it was shown that the estate left Ann Walters by Robert Smith was in the hands of Mr. William Coursey, that is, 3 cows, 1 steer 3 yrs. old, 1 cow calf, 1 steer calf, and 1073 lbs. tob.'7

On September 16, 1673, the court ordered that Ann Walters have a cow paid her out and from her father's Christopher Walters estate, being a debt due to Arthur Emory from the said estate and given to the said Ann Walters by the said Arthur Emory.18

Genealogically, the will and administration of the estate of Robert Smith leaves much to be desired. He named a daughter, Anne, but his devises of land to King and Walters orphans lend some belief that they could be his grandchildren. Traditionally, land was devised to blood kinsmen, and the landed estate of Robert Smith was not so extensive that he could afford to enrich others beside his daughter. Furthermore, his daughter Ann Emory was to enjoy only a life interest and at her death it was to revert to John King. Marke King and Christopher Walters so far as records indicate were landless and were tenants or lived upon the plantation of Robert Smith. By their dwelling on "Smeath", it may add stronger evidence to the belief that King and Walters had married his daughters and that he was providing for his orphan grandchildren. Both Marke King and Christopher Walters named sons Robert.

The following are placed as the children of Robert Smith, though Anne is the only one with definite proof:

** Christopher Walters likewise lived upon the plantation of Robert Smith, but was deceased by March 1669/70, when his estate was sued. Ref: Archives, voi. 54, pp. 458-459. On October 25, 1651, Christopher Walter, aged 12 or 13 swore at court that he was present when Thomas Lisle fell out of the tree on John Halfhead's plantation on the Patuxent, his being a servant to Halfhead at that time. Ref: Archives, vol. 10, p. 154. On January 8, 1669/70, the administration of the estate of Christopher Walters was granted to Francis Staunton, of London, Agent, with Robert Smith to appraise the estate. Ref: Test. His orphan, Ann Walters, was placed under the guardianship of Arthur Emory who in 1671 petitioned court of Talbot County for 600 lbs. tob. out of the estate of Christopher Walters for board and schooling of his ward Ann. ; Ann Smith, dau. of Robert was first named in his will of 1671 as Ann Emory but names the King grandchildren (children of Mark King). It appears that Ann Smith was living after his death of Arthur Emory even though referred to as late wife of Arthur in 1677 deed. She was married to William Turloe per deed they executed in 1702 to her son Arthur, giving him Emory's Fortune which Turloe patented in 1696. It is possible that the Ann wife of William Turloe and former wife of Arthur Emory was the widow Anne Coursey Thomas per Thomas family history which states after Tristam Thomas III died in 1686, the widow married William Turloe

     "M. M. Rasin Missing. Started from Baltimore on Steamer Bertie E. Tull - Supposed to Have Benn Attached with Heart Disease and Fell overboard - A Very Active and Influential Citizen.
     "Mr. Medford M. Rasin mysteriously disappeared from the steamer Bertie e. Tull last Wednesday night, ad at this writing his body has not been recovered. Mr. Rasin is general manager of the Bertie E. Tull Freighting Company. The steamer left Baltimore Wednesday evening on her second trip this season, loaded with soft coal for Buck Neck. Her crew consisted of Capt. D. H. Cosden, Mate Lawrence Biggs, Chief Engineer George Dull, Edw. smith and a colored deck hand named Hynson. The steamer made elegant time and at 10:02 passed Poole's Island buoy. It was when off this buoy that Mr. Rasin and Capt. Cosden were standing in front of the pilot house discussing the steamer and remarking about her speed. Mr. Rasin in this conversation made no complaint of feeling badly. When the two men separated Mr. Rasin walked toward the stern of the vessel and this was the last seen of him.
     "When the mouth of Worton Creek hove in sight Capt. Cosden entered the pilot house and Mate Biggs aroused the men preparatory to landing. Mate Biggs says he walked to the stern of the boat, but saw no signs of Mr. Rasin, and thought nothing of it.
     "The boat reached Buck Neck at 11.15 and Capt. Cosden called to the mate to notify Mr. Rasin. Mr. Rasin had a state room on the Tull and the Captain thought possibly he had gone there to rest. His reason for calling him was that Mr. Rasin said he wanted to drive up with Capt. Cosden to Melitota to spend the night with Mr. Lieberman. He was not in his state room nor could he be found anywhere about the boat!
     "Mr. Lieberman was notified and he returned and searched the boat, but in vain. Early Thursday morning his family in Chestertown were told the sad news and the report quickly spread, casting a gloom over this community. W. W. Beck, Esq., accompanied Mr. Parks Rasin to Buck Neck and they searched through all his papers and all were found intact. A rescuing party was formed and went out the creek.
     "Mrs. Rasin states that her husband has been a sufferer from a weak heart for some months and on Sunday complained of a pain in his neck and of his heart. It is the general opinion that Mr. Rasin while standing near the rail of the vessel was attacked with heart trouble, fell overboard and was drowned.
     "M.M. Rasin was very well-known in these parts, for he was born and grew to maturity here, and his interests have always been identical with those of most of his life-long associates and friends. A young man of undaunted will and force of character, not readily discouraged, industrious and painstaking.
     "The original ancestor of the Rasin family in America settled in Kent county several generations ago, having immigrated from Ireland. Philip, the grandfather of our subject, and his brother William laid their lives and services at the feet of liberty during the continental struggle for independence, and the last-mentioned rose to the rank of captain. They were all farmers and were shred, active, progressive business men. Delaney, father of M. M. Rasin, always lived in the boarders of Kent County with the sole exception of two years spent in Queen Anne's County. He met with good success in his financial ventures, and was a practical farmer. He died in 1887, upon the seventy-fourth anniversary of his birth. His wife was Mary E. Beck before their marriage, and nine children were born to them, all but three of the number are still living.
     "M.M. Rasin was born in this county in 1855, and is the eldest surviving son in his parents' family. He received such education as could be obtained in the country schools of his boyhood days and remained dutifully under the parental roof until he had reached his majority. During this period he had mastered every detail of agricultural work, and when the time came for him to manage a farm of his own he was amply equipped by long experience. It was in 1877 that he first took entire charge of a farm for himself, the place being situated near Melitota, and here he continued to dwell for a number of years. In 1892 he bought out Mr. Wood, who owned a general store and carried on the business until a few years ago. He was a Democrat politically, and was collector for the third district during the term of 1885 and 1886.
     "In 1882 Mr. Rasin married Alphonzo Parks, a daughter of A. R. Parks, formerly a respected citizen of the third district and postmaster at Still Pond, now deceased.
     "He leaves a most interesting family consisting of Mrs. Rasin, Mr. Merritt Rasin who graduated from St. John's College last year and is now studying law in Baltimore, Mr. Parks Rasin a student at Washington College but recently appointed deputy treasurer under Wm. E. Keyser, and Miss Minnie Rasin, a student at Normal Hall. His brothers were ex-county commissioner Perry B. Rasin and Robey Rasin, and two sisters, Mrs. Samuel F. Cooper and Mrs. Frank Rouse."^1,3

     "Funeral of the Late Medford Rasin.
     "Mr. Thomas Gale, of Worton, walked down to the bay shore overlooking Gale's wharf about noon Saturday and discovered the body of the late Medford M. Rasin lying at the water's edge. He notified Capt. Tarbutton who arrived about that time on board the Kitty Knight and he in turn sent word to the crew of the Bertie E. Tull. The body was then taken to Buck Neck on board the "Tull" and an inquest held by coroner Robert F. Moffett assisted by Dr. H. F. Simpers. The verdict was accidental death in a mysterious and unaccountable manner. His watch had stopped at 10.34 while money, pens, pencils and other things were intact. It is the general opinion that Mr. Rasin fell off the boat about the mouth of Worton creek. The remains were taken in charge by Undertaker J. E. Ferguson and brought to Chestertown. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. M. Sheridan, of St. James M. P. church, assisted by Dr. D. L. Greenfield, of Christ Church. Solos were sung by Miss Anna G. Lambert and Miss Eva Hurlock. The pall-bearers were Messrs. Andrew W. Woodall, W. W. Beck, Robert C. Morgan, Perry B. Rasin, C. R. Rasin, John L. Deputy, Nathan Lieberman and Tylden Cooper. The funeral procession was one of the largest seen in this section for some years evidencing the high esteem in which Mr. Rasin was held."⁴
