; Jay Letcher was born in Garwin, Iowa. Jay almost died as a 4 year old of double pneumonia. His home was near the school that he first attended, about a block from his home. Jay had two brothers. His parents moved to Flandrau, South Dakota in 1911 and farmed there a few years. The farm was sold and the family purchased a farm southeast of Winnebago, Minnesota. Jay attended the Winnebagoschools, but he did not graduate. He attended Parker College. Jay went on to try other jobs as he didn't think he wanted to be a farmer. Jay was a good salesman. However, a farming career was his destination. Jay started farming around Amboy, Minnesota. As a bachelor, Jay enjoyed dancing and made arrangements for dance bands to play in Winnebago and Amboy. Prohibition was ignored by most people and people purchased wine or alcohol in the community. Jay would have his bachelor friends over and usually had a bottle on hand for his friends to drink. Before long, the friends were asking him to purchase a bottle for them. One thing lead to another, and before long, Jay was selling liquor. Just before probition ended, Jay was caught by the Feds who set up a buy on the farm. Jay was gone hunting, but the buy was made on his farm. Jay went to a federal institution near Chillicothe, Ohio for seven months. Jay decided to go into farming again. He was engaged to Maud Kinney at one time. Jay was nicelooking and had many girls chasing after him. He met Marion Nawrocki at a dance, began dating and married in 1933, at Clear Lake, Iowa. Four children wereborn to this union, two daughters and two sons. In 1939, Jay purchased a farm near Vernon Center, Minnesota. Section 16, Vernon Center Township, Blue Earth County. The mortgage was satisfied March 1948. In 1944, Jay started selling 2-4 D and started the Letcher Farm Supply business. Over the years he has been a distributor for Tox-O-Wik and Tage, and a dealer for Peavey, Cargill, Swift, Agrico Fertilizer, Soderholm Mfg. and many more. He was active in the Republican party and Chairman of Blue Earth County. He was also active in the Farm Bureau and served on the Oliver School Board when it consolidated with Garden City school district. Jay was a very good story teller, true stories and jokes. The story we remember was when he lived in Winnebago. There were three boysin the family and they slept upstairs. One night they snuck out of the house and were going to hook up the horses. They saw a ghost walking towards them from the grove. They both started running for all they were worth to the house and climbed into bed. The ghost turned out to be their Mother, Mary Etta, who had heard them sneak outside. She put on a white sheet and set out to scare them. Ted was the tattle tale in the family. As young boys the dirty tricks and deeds they did were stealing watermelons and tipping over outhouses. Dad use to sing songs to us when we were young. One was 'Thipping Tider Thru a Straw; Yes, We Have No Bananas; The Old Lamplighter; I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles,' etc. He danced a jig and played the sax for us. Dad took tap dance lessons when he stayed with a family of girls in a boarding house in Wisconsin. Dad recitedmany poems to us as children and also his grandchildren. One is 'I remember, I remember the place where I was born,' 'Thirty days I have been on your trail, you took off your socks and threw me off your scent, etc. Jay wanted to serve in World War I but was too young and his parents would not sign for him to serve. Jay went with Jack, a barnstormer, on his first plane ride. They did loop-to-loop, upside down, etc. Jay had a Model T and took us to Oliver school in it. It had a crank on it and had seen its better days. Jay brought hissons into farming 1969. Jay had purchased land near Lake Crystal and sold it at a profit so that his sons could purchase land in Truman, Minnesota. Duane and Gary farmed in partnership the Truman and Verno.1

; Also Known As:<_AKA> Marion /Nawrocki/ Mother told us stories about her younger days. They washed dishes in a pan. When they were done, they threw thewater outside. She and a sister were fooling around and threw the water outside thinking it would get her sister, instead it was her mother coming in the door. Mother had two crooked little fingers as a young girl. Ann said she would straighten it out for her. She took a hammer and whacked it. Mom only had one crooked finger after that. Mother had a Christmas song or poem that she said as a child at school. It went as follows: There was a wee little man in awee little house and he lived over that way you see. Sitting on a bench making toys for you and me. With a rat-a-tat and a rat-a-tatt, with his hammer a tit-tat-tee. A rat-a-tatt making toys for you and me. Marion would tell her daughters about the movie stars and the movies. Clara Bow, the It Girl. Clark Gable was a heart throb, Mary Pickford and Thede Bara were popular movie stars. The 'I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles' was popular. Dances were the Charleston andthe Black Bottom Dance, the later being naughty. Marion worked at a store after completing grade school. Her teacher wanted her to go to high school. The family decided against it because of expenses. She stayed at her Uncle Franks in Fairmont working at Wallaces, a dress store. She went to dances as she got older. Curly Traetow said her dance card was always full. She was a great dancer and very pretty woman. Marian met Jay at one of the dances. She didn't like him very much. Jay talked too much. He told her he just got out of Chillicothe and told her that he was a teacher. This was partly true as he taught school there. Mom always sighted a poem to us as follows: 'When a task is once begun, never leave it until it is done. Be the labor great or small, do it well or not at all.' Mother reminded us of Poland's Paderewski, a piano playerof great renoun should anyone make fun of Polish people. Mother talked about hairstyles, like the marcel, the bob. Mother was a stylish dresser and talked about the flapper dresses. We have many photos in our possession of the stylish clothes. Her sister, Ann, wanted to borrow her clothes, but Mother didn'treally care to. Mother was an excellent cook. Some of our favorites was beef chow mein, apple pie, lemon pie with graham cracker crust, Salmon patties, Salmon soup, tuna fish on toast, lemon cake with lemon peanut frosting, fudge, beef stew, date bars, and pecan rolls and hamburger buns. She crocheted a table cloth, Queen Ann's Lace, and Delores has it now. We both remember her makingit. Mother made many quilts which both of us have. Mother crocheted many baskets for special occasions. All the granddaughters have a basket for a wedding present. Mother made many craft items for the church. Lyle Hohenstein useto get some of her flowers for weddings as she had such beautiful flower garden areas. Some of her favorites were the regal band Lilly, tulips, and roses. We bought her the Lincoln rose which is still popular today. Joyce and Nancy have some of her lilacs and peony bushes today. Mother had Lilly of the valley, snowball bush, bleeding heart, snap dragons, petunias, etc. We have many ofMom's dishes. She collected Imperial Candlewick, many plates from both sets of grandparents which we both have. Delores has the glass seals that Mother had. The pink elephant dish is from Mom. The cedar chest Joyce has. Both of us have the dinning room table set. We have her dance purse and leather purse.1
