     Son of William Downing and Sarah Miller Downing, Alvin was a veteran of the Civil War, serving with Company "A", 2nd Iowa Cavalry. He married Mary Margaret Powell in 1871 in Illinois. He homesteaded in Nebraska, and also farmed orchards in Missouri. There were five children of his marriage: Della May, Warren Powell, Jessie Buryle, L'Ervin, and Otto Fay.

     News came her (sic) Friday of the death of A.R. Downing, a former resident and pioneer of Nuckolls county (sic).
     A.R. Downing was born in Fairfield, Iowa, April 24, 1846; died at his home in Weiner, Arkansas, April 4, 1919, aged 72 years, 9 months and 10 days. He homesteaded in Nuckolls county (sic) in 1871, four miles east and two miles north of Nelson. He lived there until 1893, when he moved to Weiner, Ark. He was a Civil War veteran, being a member of the 2nd Iowa Cavalry.
     Mr. Downing was well and favorably known to the older residents of this community and he was active in its early development.
     Deceased leaves his wife and five children to mourn the loss of a true husband and kind father. The children are: Mrs. Della Mills of Edgar; W.P. Downing and Jessie DeGood of Wiener, Ark; L. Ervin Downing of Base Hospital, SanAntonia (sic), Texas; Otto Downing, LeMans, France. The last two named are still in the service. Two brothers and thirteen grand children also survive him. The many friends of the family will join us in extending sympathy.
