; He was thought to be of Welsh ancestorage (on his mother's side). He grew up on a farm in Maryland. It is suspected that his father was a negro slave. He served with the Pennsylvania Militia during the Revolutionary War. Was a member of the Third Battalion, Washington County, Pennsylvania Militia. He was a private, third class; and is listed on the class roll of Captain William Leets. In 1768, it was said that 'a Methodist missionary held meetings at the home of Mr Nettles on Catfish Creek'. It must be noted that at that time, there were less than 50 Methodist Ministers in all of North America. He owned 400 acres of land in Strabane Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania; which he sold before he migrated to Kentucky. In 1781, it was listed that he had 400 acres, 3 horses, 4 cattle, and 7 sheep; with a total value of 499. Only 4 or 5 individuals in Strabane Township showed more property than Elijah (Allega). In a list of slave owners in Washington County, Pennsylvania in 1782; He is listed as having 6 slaves in Strabane Township. In the spring of 1784, he started to emigrate to Kentucky. They came over the mountains to Pittsburg in wagons, horseback, and on foot. They brought all their household goods, horses, cows, and sheep. He owned about one dozen slaves (men, women, and children). When they arrived at Pittsburg, the river was low and there was danger from the savage Indians. So he rented a farm near Pittsburg and planted a crop. In the spring of 1785, they descended the beautiful Ohio River in a large flat boat, which was arranged in rooms for his wife, children, and quarters for the Negroes, and stalls for the horses, cows, and sheep. There were 3 guards who sat on the bow of the boat with guns loaded on the lookout for Indians; they sat there day and nigh, each one in turn.
