Birth: Feb. 7, 1814, Baltimore County, Maryland, USA
Death: Aug. 23, 1903, Westminster, Carroll County, Maryland, USA
George [1st] married Elizabeth Helen (Thompson) Matthews (21 Sept 1815 - 18 Oct 1867) on 29 Sept 1838 or 4 Oct 1838 in Baltimore, Maryland.
In the 1850 Census, George and Elizabeth were living in the 8th District [Hampstead] of Carroll County, Maryland, and he was a "farmer."
On 19 May 1856, George and Elizabeth, of Baltimore County, Maryland, sold 24 acres 34 square perches of "Hale's Venture Resurveyed" [Lot #2] in Carroll County to Cornelius Armagost for $1,484.25 current money [Liber JBB 22, Folio 40]
In the 1860 Census, George and Elizabeth were living in York, York County, Pennsylvania, and he was a "plough handle maker."
George [2nd] married Maria (Haines) Smith Matthews (28 May 1820 - 13 Oct 1885) on 19 Nov 1868 as her second husband. She was the daughter of Joseph Haines (1786-1861) [#11857692] and Margaret (Wagner) Haines (1801-1864) [#11857695] of Rockland Road in Westminster, Carroll County, Maryland.
In the 1870 Census, George and Maria were living in Westminster, Carroll County, Maryland, and he was a "machinist." The value of George's real estate was $10,000, and the value of Maria's real estate was $6,000. Maria was the only child of her parents to survive to adulthood. She can be seen on the 1877 map of District 7 as 'Mrs. G.W. Matthews' to the west of Rockland Road.
In 1878, George W. Matthews was Justice of the Peace in Westminster. In the 1880 Census, George and Maria were living in the 2nd Precinct of the Westminster District, and he was an "insurance agent." George's office was at 15 East Main Street in Westminster.
In the 1881 Westminster City Directory, George W. Matthews' home address was West Green Street and Park Avenue. This double house now faces Belle Grove Square on one side and West Green Street on the other. The double back porches of the West Green Street facing house can be seen in a picture showing the construction of St. Paul's Reformed Church that dates to about 1869. On 30 Sept 1884, George and Maria sold Lots #28 and #29 of "Matthews' Addition to Westminster" to Samuel Shunk for $2,550. [Liber FTS 62, Folio 54]
This double house (now 1 Park Avenue) is now on the northern 48' of Lots #28 and #29. Only the part of the house facing West Green Street was probably built by 1884 when George W. Matthews and Maria sold it to Samuel Shunk. Elsewhere, it says that this house stayed in the Matthews family until it was sold to the Woodward family in the 1920s. However, if you follow the line to Lewis K. Woodward in 1929, the house passed from Samuel Shunk to William B. Thomas in 1901, to Ezra C. Brown in 1905, and to Theodore F. Englar in 1919. On 6 Feb 1929 Theodore F. Englar and wife Irene sold parts of Lots #28 and #29 to Lewis K. Woodward. [Liber 152, Folio 125] In the 1930 Census, Dr. Lewis K. Woodward lived at 1 Park Avenue.
George [3rd] married Ann Maria (Frey) Miller Lane Matthews (13 Jan 1836 - 25 Jan 1921) on 25 Jan 1887 as her third husband.
In the 1900 Census, George and Ann were living at 11 John Street in Westminster, Carroll County, Maryland.
George's obituary was published in the 28 Aug 1903 issue of the Westminster American Sentinel.
THE WAGONER & MATTHEWS FOUNDRY AND MACHINE SHOPS, 14 Liberty Street -
George W. Matthews was part-owner of this business with Elijah Wagoner (1822-1900). Sometimes Elijah's surname is seen as Wagner. Elijah was born in Pennsylvania to John Frederick Wagoner (1794-1855) and his first wife, Elizabeth (Blubach) Wagoner (1794-pre 1837).
On 16 Jan 1875, George W. Matthews and wife Maria sold his share of the business to Elijah Wagoner for $4,750 current money. [Liber FTS 44, Folio 433]
In the 1870 Census, Elijah Wagoner was a "machinist and farmer," and his real estate was worth $30,000. Elijah was still a "machinist" in the 1880 Census.
The case, Martin L. Main and William A. McKellip, Garnishees of Elijah Wagoner vs. Edward Lynch, might be why the foundry building at 14 Liberty Street was sold to the B.F. Shriver Canning Co. in 1878.
This stone foundry building is now O'Lordan's Irish Pub.
WESTMINSTER CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN, Park Place and Bond Street -
George W. Matthews donated a lot fronting on Belle Grove Square upon which an English Baptist Church was erected by the friends of its' pastor, Rev. Dr. Isaac Cole (1806-1885). The Baptist congregation was small, and so on 9 May 1879 the trustees of the Westminster Baptist Church, Dr. Isaac Cole, Julia J. Cole, George W. Matthews, Charles L. Morgan, and Isabella Matthews, conveyed the building to the Pipe Creek Church of the Brethren (German Baptists or Dunkers) for $2,200. In 1932, the original church was replaced with the current church building.
On 19 Aug 1869, George W. Matthews and his second wife, Maria, had conveyed Lot 24 of "Matthews' Addition to Westminster" to Dr. Isaac Cole for $500.00. Dr. Cole's wife was Julia Ann (Myers) Cole (c.1807-c.1886). On 23 June 1887, Julia's grandson, Isaac N. Cole, acting in his capacity as the executor of her will, conveyed Lot 24 of "Matthews' Addition to Westminster," fronting on Park Street, to Julia J. Zepp for $2,000. Dr. Isaac Cole and his wife had a granddaughter named Julia J. Cole (born c.1852), and she was living with them in the 1870 and 1880 Censuses. Julia J. Cole was the daughter of Charles Howard Cole (c.1830-1887)and Rebecca Jane (Scott) Cole (1829-1880).
BELLE GROVE SQUARE -
In the 1870s, the city of Westminster annexed a residential development by George W. Matthews called "Matthews' Addition to Westminster," which included the area around Belle Grove Square. Green Street was not yet a through street on this plat.
On 24 Aug 1866, John B. Boyle and wife Elizabeth W. had conveyed 1 acre, 67 perches, of "The Resurvey of Bedford" to George W. Matthews for $3,000. This land had previously belonged to Jacob Mathias, deceased. This sale also included 5 acres, 3 roods, 17 perches, of "Bond's Meadow Enlarged" that had previously belonged to Joshua Yingling.
George Matthews laid out the 30 lots, nearly all of which front on Belle Grove Square, and began selling them off to builders. George reserved lot #27 (now 13 Park Avenue) for himself. On 31 Mar 1896, George and his third wife, Ann, sold this house to Oscar D. Gilbert for $1,405.
The presentation of the deed for Belle Grove Square from George and his second wife, Maria, to the city of Westminster was reported in the 12 May 1877 issue of the Westminster American Sentinel.
Reportedly George and Maria first named the square Lafayette Square, and then later the name was changed to Belle Grove Square in honor of his daughter, Isabella.
