Birth: Sep. 29, 1841, Alabama, USA
Death: Mar. 8, 1892, Emma (historical), Crosby County, Texas, USA
3rd LT CO G 12 REGT TEXAS CAV - CONFEDERATE STATES ARMY
John Wesley Spikes was born Sept. 29, 1841, in Alabama. His parents were John Edward Spikes and Nancy Colquhoun (Calhoun). After serving in the Civil War, John Wesley came to Kaufman, Texas with his father's family. He was attached to Captain Kizer, 12th Texas Cavalry, Parson's Brigade, where he soon became a lieutenant.
They settled in Kaufman when it was a frontier where they ranched. John Wesley married Julia Ann Fox, daughter of Dr. Joseph Fox and Elizabeth Shaw, July 3, 1861.
After years of living in Kaufman, John Wesley moved his family to the Texas Plains bringing three or four hundred head of cattle with them. These cattle froze to death the first winter.
When they arrived near what was to be Emma in Crosby County, Texas, they lived in a tent in Estacado until their two-room house was built. Capt. Spikes helped establish the town of Emma.
John Wesley wasn't at Emma very long before he was killed by the kick of a vicious horse. He is the third person buried in the Emma Cemetery.

James Blackwell was born on 30 January 1743 at Northumberland Co., Virginia, USA;
Hardy [1911:50-1] says b. 20 Jan 1743. Find A Grave says b. 28 Mar 1743.3,2,5 He married Ann Blackwell, daughter of Col. William Blackwell and Elizabeth Crump, on 3 March 1766.4,2
James Blackwell was buried in 1818 at Burial location unknown ;
From Find A Grave:
BIRTH 28 Mar 1743, Northumberland County, Virginia, USA
DEATH 1818 (aged 74–75), Henry County, Kentucky, USA
James Blackwell was the son of Samuel Blackwell & Elizabeth (Steptoe) Blackwell of "Walnut Lodge" in Northumberland Co., Virginia. It was here that James was born and reared. As a young man he came to live in Fauquier County, Va. where two of his uncles had come to live, one being Joseph Blackwell, the first sheriff of Fauquier County & the other being William Blackwell who also served as an early sheriff for Fauquier County. James served as a lieutenant in the Fauquier County Militia during the Revolutionary War -- following an old family tradition. He married on the 3rd of March, 1766 in Fauquier County to his cousin, Ann Blackwell.
In 1785 James Blackwell and his family removed with his brother-in-law, Armistead Churchill, along with other family members to the wilds of western Kentucky. He settled in Jefferson County, Kentucky and was a magistrate there. He followed the tradition of his family and was a farmer/planter and was active in various capacities in his county and was sometimes cited as Captain James Blackwell in various court documents. Here he lived out the remainder of his days. James and Ann Blackwell settled in that part of Jefferson County which later became Henry County. Deeds and Court papers show that James and Nancy Blackwell resided first in Jefferson County (formed in 1780), then the deeds show Shelby County (formed in 1792 from Jefferson County) and finally Henry County (formed in 1798 from Shelby County). It appears they did not move but that the boundaries of the counties changed as new counties were created and boundaries were redrawn. Drennen's Creek appears in numerous deeds and court papers indicating this is the proximity of their farm. It was customary in the countryside in those days to be buried upon one's own land. James Blackwell died in 1818 at Henry Co., Kentucky, USA.5
Hardy [1911:50-1] says b. 20 Jan 1743. Find A Grave says b. 28 Mar 1743.3,2,5 He married Ann Blackwell, daughter of Col. William Blackwell and Elizabeth Crump, on 3 March 1766.4,2
James Blackwell was buried in 1818 at Burial location unknown ;
Often a family gravesite was maintained up to a time that some future generation no longer remembered or cared to tend to it.

Ann Blackwell was buried in 1811 at Burial location unknown ;
From Find A Grave:
BIRTH 1743, ince William County, Virginia, USA
DEATH 1811 (aged 67–68), Henry County, Kentucky, USA
Ann Blackwell was the daughter of Colonel William Blackwell (1713-1774) & Elizabeth (Crump) Blackwell (1717-1801) of Prince William County, Virginia (later becoming Fauquier County). Her father was a planter and a colonel in the county militia. He served as High Sheriff of Fauquier County in 1766. The family were Episcopalians. Her father had come from Northumberland County, further to the south, and was the son of Samuel Blackwell & Margery (Downing) Blackwell of "Walnut Lodge."
Ann married her cousin, James Blackwell, (which was not uncommon in those days) on March 3rd, 1766 in Fauquier County. Her husband was a farmer/planter who served as a lieutenant in the Fauquier County Militia during the War for American Independence. She had seven children born in Fauquier County before the family removed to the fertile lands of western Kentucky in 1785 with a caravan of Virginians including Armistead Churchill (who was married to James' sister Elizabeth). James and Ann Blackwell had three more children with Thornton being the first to be born in Kentucky. They settled in that part of Jefferson County which later became Henry County. Deeds and Court papers show that James and Nancy Blackwell resided first in Jefferson County (formed in 1780), then the deeds show Shelby County (formed in 1792 from Jefferson County) and finally Henry County (formed in 1799 from Shelby County). It appears they did not move but that the boundaries of the counties changed as new counties were created and boundaries were redrawn. Drennen's Creek appears in numerous deeds and court papers indicating this was the proximity of their farm. It was customary in the countryside in those days to be buried upon one's own land. Often a family gravesite was maintained up to a time that some future generation no longer remembered or cared to tend to it.
The following children were born of this union:
1. William, b. ca. 1767, Fauquier Co., Va; md. 2 Mar. 1795 at Capt. Green's in Culpepper Co., Va.
2. Robert, b. btwn. 1770-80, Fauquier Co., Va; did not marry; was in Washington Parish, La. in 1830.
3. Steptoe, b. ca. 1771, Fauquier Co., Va; never married; came to live in New Orleans.
