BIRTH 22 Feb 1825, Buffalo, Erie County, New York, USA
DEATH 17 Jan 1895 (aged 69), Evansville, Rock County, Wisconsin, USA
A Sudden Shock, Followed by the Dreamless Sleep DIED: In Evansville. Wis., January 17, 1895, Mr. G. A. Backenstoe, of heart failure. Aged nearly 70 years.
Mr. Backenstoe was born in Buffalo, N. Y., in 1824, and went to Conneaut, Ohio, with his parents, where they lived until coming west in 1847. For a time he occupied a clerkship in a store in Cooksville, marrying Miss Ellen M. Hoxie in March 1848. Mr. Backenstoe came with his family to Evansville, in 1869, and for a time ran the only bakery in town, his real occupation, however, being that of a painter, which business he followed until his death.
During Rev. J. W. Harris' pastorate, in Evansville, Mr. Backensto experienced religon and united with the Congregational church of this place, continuing a worthy member thereof until his death.
Mr. Backenstoe leaves, besides his wife, a son, Chas. W., who lives in Beloit; Lizzie M. Ensign, who lives in Janesville; Kate E. Richardson, who lives in Vermillion, S. D; Mary, who is a teacher in a parochial school in Jonesborough, Tenn., and Maud, the sole one of the children, who was at home at her father's death.
Mr. Backenstoe was apparently as well as usual, going to his work early Thursday morning, but was soon attacked with a shock, and was brought home in an insensible condition, from which he never rallied. Dr. Smith was called but could afford no relief. He died without a struggle, (apparently sleeping) at twenty minutes to twelve o'clock. His sudden death was a shock of surprise to his family and also to the community and friends.
The funeral will be held at his late residence, on First Street, Sunday afternoon at two o'clock. January 19, 1895, The Badger, p. 1, col. 4, Evansville, WI [Obit courtesy of Ruth Ann Montgomery]

HEMLOCK LAKE NEWS
Last Friday night people of the village were considerably stirred up by the elopement of Mr. Lewis Schneck and Miss Lucy Wemett, the eldest daughter of Harvey and Ida Wemett. The young couple started out ostensibly to attend the Baptist sugar social at Walter Westbrook's, but went from there to Livonia and were married by the Rev. Mr. Gatea. They were followed by Mr. Wemett and his brother-in-law, Chas. Trimmer; but as they went from Westbrook's to Mr. Hickok's and from there to Honeoye, tiring out their borse, they did not overtake the runaways.
