     HEMLOCK LAKE NEWS - The funeral of Mrs. Ellen Trimmer, the widow of Edwin Trimmer an old and highly respected resident of the town, who died Friday night at the home of her son, Charles H. Trimmer, was held from the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. Mr. Richmire officiating. She is survived by two sons, Charles H. of this village and Horace of Avon and one daughter, Mrs Harvey Wemett, of Livonia. Mr Trimmer died two years ago, the funeral being held just two years to a day previous to Mrs. Trimmer's. Mrs. Trimmer's last days were made comfortable by the unremitting care given by her on and his wife, with whom she lived. No attention was lacking during her long sickness and every kindness and consideration was shown and every want supplied. Her children have the consolation of the knowledge that everything was done for their mother that was possible.

     "In the name of God, Amen. I , Thomas H. Trimmer of the town of Benton in the County of Yates and State of New York of the age Fifty four and upwards being of sound mind and memory (blessed be Almighty God for the same) do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is today.
     "First. I will and devise to my brother Epenetus Trimmer all my undivided real estate situated in the town of Benton, county and state aforesaid and being a part of Lot number thirteen - reference to a deed given by Anthony Trimmer to Epenetus Trimmer and Thomas H. Trimmer excepting six acres of said land.
     "Second. The six acres of land above excepted I will and devise to my sister Mary Gates and to her heirs and assigns forever. My will is that she have the said six acres of land off the northwest corner of the farm. Said six acres to be forty rods long north and south and twenty four rods wide east and west.
     "Third. One year after my death I will that my brother Epenetus Trimmer pay to my sister Sarah Gage Thirty dollars, and to my brothers Anthony Trimmer and Isaih [sic] F. Trimmer each twenty dollars and also to my brother David Trimmer twenty dollars, said above mentioned sums not to be on interest until due.
     "Fourth. I hereby constitute and appoint my brother Epenetus Trimmer Executor to this my last will and testament hereby revoking all will and testaments heretofore made by me.
     "Witness my hand and seal this 3rd day of April 1854. Thomas K. Trimmer
     "The above instrument consisting of one half sheet and now here subscribed by Thomas H./K. (?) Trimmer the testator in the presence of each of us and was at the same time declared by him to be his last will and testament and we at his request sign our names hereto as attending witnesses.

He was active as the R'd Skin Men & sinewy. His delighte was in sportes of strengthe, & withe his owne hands he did help to rear bothe our house and the firste meeting house in Wethersfield wherein he preacht yeares to fewe. He was well Featured & Fresh favored with faire Skin & longcurling hair (as near all of us had) with a merrie eye & swete smiling Mouthe, tho he coulde frowne sternlie eno' when need was...I remembered ye sweetnesse & ye Charity of
my firste Farther."

He studied at Kings College in Cambridge, England in 1619-1620, and was ordained by the Bishop of Peterborough on June 8, 1623.

Henry came with his wife, four children, four men servants, and four maid servants on a ship with John Driver, master, sailing from Weymouth, England in 1636. They settled first in Watertown, Mass., and in March of 1636, Rev. Smith and six other men were appointed commissioners, giving them full power by the Massachusetts legislature to govern Connecticut for one year. On December 5, 1637, Henry and his wife were admitted to communion at the Watertown Church.

In 1638, the family removed to Wethersfield, Conn. and Rev. Henry was the first ordained minister there. His homelot consisted of five acres and was bounded by the Wethersfield Green and the burying ground. According to an article in the "Connecticut Nutmegger", there was great dissatisfaction with the leadership of Rev. Smith (the wealthy ruling elder of the church, Clement Chaplin, incited rebellion in the flock against Rev. Henry and the people brought grievances against him), and because of this, the Connecticut legislature asked that he "lay down his place, if it be done according to God". Rev. Henry refused to resign, and the court found that there was no basis to the complaints. As a result, Mr. Chaplin and others were fined for what they had done against Rev. Smith.

In 1637, Henry Smith from Wethersfield was one of 90 men who joined in the Pequot-Narrigansett War in Rhode Island.

Henry may have had two wives. He would have married the first wife in England where she died after the birth of their three children, Mary, PHILLIPA, and Perigrin (her name is not known). His second wife, who was much younger & named Dorothy. Some say that she was Dorothy Cotton, but I know of no proof of this. However, the name "Cotton" was used in subsequent generations of descendants. Rev. Henry & Dorothy were the parents of five known children: Samuel Smith, Dorothy (Smith) Blakeman Hall St. John Moore, Joanna (Smith) Russell, Noah Smith, and Elizabeth Smith. The year after Henry's death (1649), widow Dorothy Smith married John Russell, father of Rev. John Russell who was sucessor of Rev. Henry Smith as minister of the Wethersfield Church.

According to his son, he died of the great fever just before the birth of his daughter, Elizabeth. Rev. Henry Smith's will was dated May 8, 1648, giving Dorothy full power to dispose of his estate. His will instructed that Samuel was to have his house lot which was intended for his eldest son, Peregrine, deceased. Henry left five acres each of meadow to sons, Samuel & Noah. The rest of the children were not named in the will but were to receive 20 pounds each, and the children of his two married daughters were given five pounds each. His estate was inventoried by James Boosey & Samuel Smith, and totaled a little more than 370 pounds.¹

He was constable at Marshfield in Mass. Bay Colony as early as 1642/3. On Feb. 12, 1643, he received a grant of land, "..all the marsh and meadow which lieth between the marsh of Josiah Winslow and Kenelm Winslow".

He purchased land in Dartmouth Bristol, Mass from Capt. Miles Standish in a deed dated March 9, 1664. He was an original proprietor of what is now called Dartmouth and was propounded a freeman there on June 5, 1644. Several years between 1665 & 1683, he was a representative to the General Court at Plymouth. He build a house that was used as a garrison and a refuge during the King Phillips War.

John Russell married Dorothy, widow of REV. HENRY SMITH, about 1649. She was probably his second wife. She preceded him in death.

His will was dated January 19, 1687/8 and proved April 2, 1695.

Rev. Adam Blakeman, the father of Dorothy's first husband, Rev. John Blakeman, had an unsuccessful law suit with a John Thomas for the hand of Widow Blakeman (Dorothy). In 1665, he (Adam) wrote in his will that his "daughter" [actually his daughter-in-law] would receive five pounds if she would not marry John Thomas or continue a widow for five years. She obviously didn't marry him.

The daughter of REV. HENRY SMITH, she married Samuel Hale in 1642 or 1643 in Wethersfield, Conn. Her birth and death dates have never been verified, but it is assumed that Mary died between 1668 when their daughter Dorothy was born and 1675 as Samuel married Phebe Dickinson after 1675. It is Phebe who was listed as widow Hale died on 19 Jan 1711/12 in the Barbour Records. That is also confirmed on page 7 of Hale, House and related families, by Donald Lines Jacobus. Samuel's marriage to Phebe can be confirmed on page 637 of NE Marriages, Prior to 1700.

Baptized 1 July 1615 in Watton at Stone, Hertfordshire, England, Samuel Hale was at Wethersfield in the Colony of Conn. in 1637. He was granted sixty acres of land for serving in the Pequot War.

In 1639, he was in Hartford where he owned a lot on the east side of the river. He removed to Wethersfield in 1642 where he married Mary Smith, daughter of my ancestor, REV. HENRY SMITH. He was a selectman in Wethersfield in 1647.

In 1654 he was one of the first settlers of Norwalk and was deputy to the Gen. Court in Hartford from 1656 to 1659. He returned to Wethersfield and took up residence at Governor Welles estate on the east side of the Great River. This part of Wethersfield was part of Glastonbury in 1690.

His will was dated December 26, 1692 and proved December 6, 1693. His inventory amounted to about 100 pounds.

The son of JOHN BIRDSEYE (mother unknown), he immigrated from Reading, Berkshire, England to America in 1636, settling first in Wethersfield in the Colony of Conn. where he married (1) PHILIPA SMITH, daughter of REV. HENRY SMITH of Wethersfield, about 1637.

The family removed from Wethersfield to Milford and then to Stratford in 1649. He was Deacon of the First Congregation Church of Stratford and had lot # 16. Deacon John was mentioned in the Stratford town records in 1650 along with William & John Curtis, Joseph Hawley, Samuel Wells, Richard Booth, John Thompson, William Wilcoxson and his three sons.

He was propounded a freeman of Stratford in 1668.

"There is a story that John Birdseye of Milford, a New Haven Colony town, was caught kissing his wife one Sunday in 1649. On Monday the town officials sentenced him to be lashed. Breaking loose from his captors, Birdseye swam the river to Stratford, then thumbed his nose to his pursuers across the river. The Birdseyes stayed in Stratford, where the laws were less restrictive"
Connecticut Trilogy states that his wife swam the river after him on the following day.

He married (2) Alice Tomlinson, widow of Henry Tomlinson of Stratford. In his will dated Aug. 22, 1689, he names Alice, and his children, JOHN (my ancestor) & Joanna, wife of Timothy Wilcoxson.

Regarding picture to the right: The names of JOHN BIRDSEYE & PHILLIPA, his wife, are on a plaque on the Memorial Bridge over the Wepawaug River in Milford placed by the Milford 350th Celebration Committee, July 8, 1989. It says: "IN MEMORY OF THE 18 ORIGINAL SETTLERS OF MILFORD WHOSE NAMES WERE NOT PLACED ON THE MEMORIAL BRIDGE WHEN IT WAS BUILT IN 1889: JOHN BIRDSEYE OBIT 1690, PHILLIPA SMITH HIS WIFE"

The son of George & Maria (Hyde) Tomlinson, Henry was baptized at St. Peter's Church at St. Werburgh, Derbyshire, England in November of 1606. His family belonged to the "Landed Gentry" of England. Henry's occupation was that of a weaver, as probably was his father's.

Henry & his wife, Alice, with two or three children cam to New England, probably living in New Haven first, and eventually settling in Milford, Conn. by 1652. He was appointed to keep an "Ordinary" (inn) at Milford. In 1654, he was fined for non-payment of duties on imported wine, which he refused to pay since he had paid all "legal" duties. He brought charges in the courts against the Governor of New Haven, Colony for over-stepping the law causing the Governor to be arrested. There were several Tomlinsons in that area of New Haven colony at the time, Thomas, Robert, Jonas, & William, but no connection of Henry to them is known.

On April 1, 1657, he purchased the estate of Joshua Atwater in Stratford. Along with Joseph Hawley, Henry Tomlinson purchased a considerable tract of land in Derby, Conn. of the Indians, and much of this land owned by Henry was transferred to his son, Jonas, and kept in the family for generations. He along with others also purchased a large tract of land of the Indians at New Milford. On January 2, 1670 Henry Tomlinson was chosen to keep an inn in Stratford.

Henry Tomlinson brought a Coat-of-Arms to America with him which was passed down the family.

His will written March 15, 1680/81 in Stratford showed his strong faith in Almighty God and the saving power of Jesus Christ. He bequeathed as follows:
...to my loving wife, "Allice" Tomlinson and to my son, Agur Tomlinson, all my houses & buildings with all my lands in Stratford. If she remarry, she is to receive 1/3 and the remainder to Augur. After her death, Augur is to recieve her share.
He states that he had already given sufficient estate to his son, Jonas and daughters, Harger, Mary Pierson, Tabatha Worster, Phebe Worster, and Bashua Stiles, but that son, Augur was to give daughter, Margaret five pounds the year after our death, to Jonas four pound the second year after our death, to daughter, Mary Pierson five pounds the third year after our death, to daughter Tabetha Worster five pounds the fourth year after our death, to Phebe Worster twenty pounds the fifth year after our death, and to Basshua Stiles five pounds the sixth year. If any of them should die, their amount shall go to Jonas & his heirs. If Augur shall die & leave no heirs, his portion shall return to Jonas, and Jonas shall pay the above named heirs twenty pounds each on the above yearly schedule.
....to the two sons, Jonas & Augur, his Indian purchases at Derby, and his guns. Augur is to receive a horse, oxen, bed & furniture.
....to grandchildren, Timothy Worster and Abigail Harger, if they stay with the widow or Agur for four years, one mare each.
