     "Diego was born about 1355, the son of Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, 1.señor de Agular, and Maria Garcia Carrillo. With his father and his brother Alfonso he fought for Castile in the wars in Portugal, including the siege of Lisbon, the Battle of Aljubarrota and the Battle of Valverde (15 October 1385), in which Dom Nuno Alvares Pereira, the Constable of Portugal, was victorious over the Castillians at Valverde Merida. Diego's father died on the day after the battle.
     "The kings of Castile Juan I, Enrique III 'the Infirm' and Juan II awarded Diego's loyalty and faithful service with significant gifts and honours. He was made _Mariscal de Castilla_ (Marshal of Castile), a dignity created by Juan I of Castile in 1382. He received an inheritance of the land of the then frontier town of Baëna, and Juan I recognised it as a lordship on 4 May 1386. Juan's successor Enrique III of Castile granted Diego the border village of Cabra in April 1405 and Enrique's successor Juan II of Castile in 1415 gave him the village of Dona Mencia. He was governor of Alcalá de la Real, Almodovar del Rio, Cabra and Iznajar. Juan II in Arevalo signed Diego's appointment as Constable and Warden of the town of Iznajar, bordering the kingdom of Granada.
     "With his first wife Sanchia Garcia de Rojas, señora de Poza, daughter of Sancho Sánchez de Rojas, señor de Poza, and Juana Palomeque, Diego had four children who reached adulthood, of whom his second son Pedro is recorded with progeny although he died two months before his father in September 1435.
     "Diego founded two primogenitures in Córdoba on 17 January 1423. The first, compromising the estates of Poza, Villaquirán, Báscones, Revenga and Villacisla was in favour of his eldest son Juan and his legitimate descendants. The second was in favour of his second son Pedro.
     "After 1393 Diego as a widower married Ines de Toledo de Ayala, señora de Casarrubios del Monte, eldest daughter of Pedro Suárez de Toledo y Ayala, 2.señor de Casarribios del Monte, and Juana Melendez de Orozco. Their daughter Mariana would have progeny, marrying Fadrique Enriquez de Mendoza, 2.admiral of Castile, conde de Melgar y Rueda. Their granddaughter Juana Enriquez would marry Juan II, king of Aragón and Navarre.
     "Diego made two wills, the first in 1423 and the second and final one on 8 March 1427, in which he left Baëna in entail to his second son Pedro, and instituted a primogeniture in Poza for his eldest son Juan. He died on 15 November 1435."
