Obituary
Died At Cantonment Gibson on the last day of Dec. 1831, of Pneumonia Synochoides
Gen. John Nicks Sutler for the 7th Infantry, in the 50th year of his age, after an illness of ten day's duration. Gen. Nicks was born in the State of North Carolina. At the augmentation of the Army in 1808, he entered the military service, with the rank of Captain and left with that of Lt. Col. at the reduction in 1821. From that time till his decease, he held the appt. of Sutler to the 7th Reg on the Ark. river, during which period he also some times represented the people of Ark. in the Territorial Legislature. Into whatever relation he entered, whether that of citizen, legislator , or soldier, Gen. N. always carried with him talents adequate to the discharge of his duties, and an energy of character which impelled to their immediate execution. His mind, rather of a brilliant order, was above the usual standard of intellect, but the strongest and most admirable trait of his character, was that of a fixed and unbending integrity. His loss will long be a subject of regret in this community, and his departure hence to be no more here, deeply lamented by his surviving and afflicted family.
His remains were interred the day after his decease, with honors due his former military rank, and the service appointed for the Protestant Episcopal Church, for the burial of the dead, was read at his grave.

BIRTH 1806, Virginia, USA
DEATH 1862 (aged 55–56), Crawford County, Arkansas, USA
Daughter of Elisha Perkins and sister of Constantine. She married John Nicks on July 13, 1824. Their children were Eliza Perkins Nicks (Apr. 19, 1826 and wife of Col. S. Lewis Griffith) and John Quinten Nicks (c. 1828). Sallie was a popular young widow whose charms were enhanced by the fact that the estate left by the General was valued at $20,000. When Washington Irving visited the post in 1832, he recorded in his notebook that several of the officers at the post paid court to her, and the quartermaster serenaded her so often and so vigorously that he disturbed the sleep of others, and made himself a good deal of a nuisance in the post. According to Irving, General William Clark and Colonel Arbuckle were both fascinated by the young widow, and a civilian named Lewis paid such ardent court that all of the officers united against him. She later married Col. Robert Stuart Gibson. Their children were Robert Stuart, Irene and Mary Ann Stuart. Mary Ann married Brigadier General Richard Caswell Gatlin.
