Thomas Carpenter died between 1850 and 1851 at Madison Co., Virginia, USA; From Chrstine Weaver Downey Family Tree:
"The following information is from the Library of Virginia, Digital Records Collection. It was copied from the Cathi Clore Frost database.
Cave (formerly Thomas Carpenter) Home researched by Evelyn Tunison for the WPA 11 August 1937. " Location: On the west side of Route #16, next door to the court house, Madison, Virginia. Owners: The place was built in 1834 by Thomas Carpenter. About 1858 it came into the hands of Belfield Cave etc."
"This house is spotted by citizens of this and surrounding counties as the scene of a murder which occurred in 1851. On the north side of the house, at the door leading into the bar in the basement, Thomas Carpenter was shot by Edmund Clore. (Carpenter) was shot at close range, and it is said as many as seventeen shots went into his body. The cause of the shooting was a quarrel that had occurred between Thomas Carpenter and Edmund Clore's son, resulting in Carpenter's hitting Edmund Clore's son. (Reportedly, Clore fled to the Episcopal Church for refuge, but he was found and tried). Edmund Clore was indicted for the murder and pleaded not guilty. His trial began May 13, 1851 and lasted through October 22. He was convicted of murder in the first degree and sentenced to be "hanged by the neck until he be dead".
"On a spot about twenty-five yards north of Route #29, in the west portion of the town of Madison, and the same distance from Cedar Hill Cemetery, there is a stone which "Uncle" James Price, an old Negro of this vicinity, says supported the scaffolding upon which Edmund Clore was hanged on December 19, 1851. On the morning that Clore was hanged it became so dark that all the chickens went to roost and many people went to bed. After the hanging the sun came out again. It is not known whether this sudden darkening was caused by an eclipse or some other cause. It was the general opinion that this darkness was caused by the fact that an innocent man had been hanged."
"Until this day this house is spoken of as being haunted."
From Weyland Website: "Dove, p.260, shows a photo of the famous tavern and home in Madison, Va., which was owned by Thomas Carpenter. Thomas was shot and killed in 1850 and his assailant hanged. It seems that Thomas whipped the son of Edmund Clore for some offense. Clore became uncontrollably angry, came into town, and shot Thomas Carpenter dead when he came out of his tavern. Seeing him dead, Clore became frightened, ran and hid under the Episcopal Church. A warrent was obtained, he was arrested and sentenced to be hanged. As the hour of execution approached, apparently an eclipse of the sun took place. A large crowd was there and this caused considerable consternation, as was seen as a divine providence. When it passed, the prisoner was hanged anyway. The tavern also served as a schoolhouse, according to Dove, but certainly not at the same time. It was the family residence and served as an exchange for carriages and stagecoaches traveling the Blue Ridge turnpike from Petersburg to Staunton."
