BIRTH 12 Apr 1777, Madison County, Virginia, USA
DEATH 1851 (aged 73–74), Madison County, Virginia, USA
Adam Wayland was born 12 April 1777, and died about 1851 in Madison County. 1851 is the date usually referenced. He was the son of Adam Wayland Sr and Maria Finks.
Adam's grandfather, Thomas Wayland (b. 1681) arrived in America in 1719 as a part of the Germanna Colony in Essex County (now Orange), Virginia, as German immigrants. Many immigrants of the colony later settled in what is now Madison County, named after James Madison, who the colonist's descendants aggressively helped elect through the Hebron Lutheran Church.
In using the index to the Hebron Lutheran Church baptismal register where Adam attended, one will see different spellings of the Wayland name: Wayland, which is used after 1782, and Weyland, which is generally used before that date.
As a child, Adam Weyland was baptized 18 May 1777, with sponsors John Blankenbaker, Christina Blankenbaker, Adam Fisher, and Barbara Fisher. The easiest one of these to identify is Christina, who was born a Finks, the sister of Mary, the mother of Adam. Barbara Fisher was the cousin of Christopher, and sister of Adam's first wife Elizabeth.
Children of Adam Wayland and Judah Burke, md 1803.
Children of Adam Wayland and Sarah:
NOTE: Location changed names as more counties were added: Essex formed in 1692, Spotsylvania came from part of Essex 1721, Orange from part of Spotsylvania 1734, Culpeper from part of Orange 1749, Madison from part of Culpeper in 1749.

Maj. Albert Gallitin Wayland was buried on 14 August 1886 at Hebron Cemetery, Hebron, Augusta Co., Virginia, USA; Fom Find A Grave:
BIRTH 7 Jan 1806, Madison County, Virginia, USA
DEATH 14 Aug 1886 (aged 80), Swoope, Augusta County, Virginia, USA
Died in the 82nd year of his age
Son of Adam Wayland Jr and Judah "Judith" Burke. Albert's great grandfather (Thomas Wayland (b. 1681) arrived in America in 1719 as a part of the Germanna Colony in Essex County (now Spotsylvania) Virginia, as German immigrants. Many settled several years later (about 1725) in what is now Madison County, named after James Madison, who the colonist's descendants helped elect through the Hebron Lutheran Church.
Albert married Jane Ledgerwood Moffett (11 Dec 1811, VA - 26 Jan 1849, VA, m. 7 Jan 1830) and had four known children, Sarah Ellen (m. A Brownlee Lightner), Susan Jane (m. Thos Kirkpatrick), Sgt William Hays (unmarried in Mexico), Edward Jenkins (m. Nancy Trimble). Albert's wife, Jane died likely died as a result of childbirth.
In 1852, Albert married Lucy A Early (1820-26 Nov 1888) and had one son, Eugene B. The 1870 Census appears to show Albert has another daughter Mary Alberta "Bertie" (m. Ham Kirkpatrick, 1853-1934). For some reason, Bertie is not included as their child in historical genealogist's records.
OBITUARY: Death of Aged Citizen - Major A G Wayland, a highly respected and worthy citizen of this country, died at his residence near Swoope's Depot at 3 o'clock last Saturday morning the 14th, in the 92nd year of age. He was a native of Madison County and removed to this county when a young man. Mr Edward Wayland of Waynesboro is a brother of the deceased and is the only remaining member of his father's family. The deceased leaves two sons and three daughters. The sons are W. H. Wayland of Nevada, and E. G. Wayland of this county; and the daughters are Mrs. A. B. Lightner of this county, Mrs Thos Kirkpatrick and Mrs Ham. Kirkpatrick (Susan) of Greensbrier County, WVA. The funeral of the deceased at Hebron Church on last Sabbath was largely attended. The service was performed by Rev L B Johnston, Pastor of that church.
Until March 18__, the home of the venerable Maj Alex. G Stuart was in Rockbridge County, near Brownsburg, where, among his kindred, he was reared from infancy, and resided until near four score and ten years of age. At the time named above, he came to reside with Mr. E. J. Wayland, near Swoope's Depot, who is a nephew of his wife. The home of Maj. Wayland, who died Saturday, is but a few roads from that of his son.
Maj. Stuart attended the first part of the funeral ceremonies of his deceased friend, but did not go to the church because of feebleness. Sunday night following, he became unwell, and died Monday night, conversing a few minutes before his death to the last. He was in the 90th year of his age, which would have been completed 19th of Sept. Major Stuart was married three times, the last wife the aunt of Mr Wayland, who survives her husband.
Referring to his long residence in Rockbridge and his association there, where resided other members of his family of his own and preceding generations, and where he leaves younger relatives and a whole community of attached friends. It can be truly said that no one was more highly esteemed for sterling worth and venerated for a long life of Christian example. How many years he was a pillar in the Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church and a member of the session, its old records would have to be searched, for none of his early associates are there now to speak of his efforts in church affairs, which commenced farther back than the span allotted to human life.
Yesterday afternoon the body was conveyed to the Valley R. R. depot in this city, and thence to Timber Ridge, where the funeral services will be conducted this morning, and the form of the aged Christian and exemplary citizen will be laid to rest under the old sepulchral lake beside the forms of his kindred.Rev L B Johnson, Pastor of Hebron Church, and other friends of the deceased, accompanied the remains.

BIRTH 1814, Madison County, Virginia, USA
DEATH unknown, Howard County, Missouri, USA
Son of Adam Wayland Jr and Judah "Judith" Burke. Nathaniel's great grandfather (Thomas Wayland b. 1681) arrived in America in 1719 as a part of the Germanna Colony in Essex County (now Orange) Virginia, as German immigrants. Many settled several years later in what is now Madison County, named after James Madison, who the colonist's descendants helped elect through their Hebron Lutheran Church.
Nathaniel Skinner Wayland served in the military in Virginia (Enlisted: Private Company H, 1st Bn Reserves Infantry Regiment). Married Mary Ann Crigler January 17, 1838.
In 1850, purchased home in Madison County from Joseph Wilhoit. [Joseph's sister, Rosina Wilhoit was Nathaniel's Aunt by marriage to John Wayland, his father Adam's half brother.] A photo of the home can be see in "Madison County Homes", Dove, page 160. This is the last home he lived in prior to leaving for Missouri.
He and his wife and their 12 year old daughter migrated to Missouri in a covered wagon in 1869 along with other family members. Nathaniel settled in Franklin Township on rich river bottom land and became a prosperous farmer. He was alive in Franklin, Howard, Missouri at least until August 1896, as he held a family reunion at his home.
Nathaniel Skinner Wayland and Mary Ann Crigler had the following children:
NOTE: In "Madison County Homes", Dove, page 160 there is a rumor Nathaniel Wayland had sons fighting on both sides of the Civil War. This would be more likely if some of the family members had moved to the boarder state of Missouri during the war, but they moved four years after the war ended.
Nathaniel's son, Fielding Henry, fought in the war for the South and was present at Lee's surrender to Grant, then walked home to Madison, Virginia. No other son is found in the records as fighting in the Civil War. My grandmother, Annie Wayland, daughter of Fielding Henry, would have spoken of this in family circles, if it were true.
