"It appears that most of Willis children except for William who died the next year, left Craven County and Cove City shortly after his death. Keziah moved to Camden County, North Carolina, where she is listed in the 1800 census as having only one daughter in the household with her. It is my guess that this daughter is the only child that she and Willis had together (probably Betsey). It seems at the time of his death that most of his children were grown. As of yet, I am unable to locate a name of Willis first wife, her last name could have possibly been Hardy as there were Hardy's in the area and they named their son Hardy. (Willis offspring are still naming their son's Hardy.) Keziah appears to have been married before also to a Charles Aclin who died before 1785, when she John Beesley, and Stephen Slade signed a bond in his behave.
"It would be great to know more personal items about Willis and his family. Willis and William Mecoy, John Mecoy (Willis' son) and Solomon Beesley's land adjoined and they had a lot of dealings with each other.
"Solomon and John Beesley traveled with John Mecoy and his wife Mary Beesley Mecoy to Rutherford County, Tennessee in 1804 where between the two families they had close to 2000 acres of land.
"Most family members returned to the MCCOY spelling the next generation, some however, continued to spell their name MECOY until the Twentieth Century.
"According to tradition, history and old records, the McCoys came to the area known as Craven County, North Carolina in the early 1700s. In the year of 1736, Alexander McCoy, Duncan McNeal, Niel McNeil, James McLahlam, James Ennis, Hugh Campbell and several others came from Scotland to explore the region of the Cape Fear. They returned to Scotland, and in September of 1739, they came back with ships bringing the first Scottish Immigrants to America, numbering more than 300 persons. (Craven County Heritage, article written by S. Woodrow McCoy)
"For several years after 1746, Highland Scot Immigrants were arriving frequentley in North Carolina. Most of them established themselves in the southeast section. So rapidly did they arrive that in a few years there were more than 20,000 of them in that territory.
" Land grants are recorded to Elijah, William and Willis McCoy in the year of 1740. William and Willis were served in the North Carolina Militia, in Captain Thomas Graves Company. They were both listed on the muster roll dated October 15, 1754, along with Solomon Beesley.
"Willis settled in Craven County along Rattlesnake Branch, his neighbors were a Solomon Beesley, and William Mecoy. Solomon Beesley also served in the North Carolina Militia with William and Willis. This land that is located just outside of Cove City is still owned by the McCoy Family and many of the roads in the area are named after these early McCoy's.
"They began spelling their name MECOY during the Revolutionary War as a result of a disputes between two brothers. One chose to fight for the Colonies and one chose to fight for the Mother Country. They became so mad at each other that Willis changed his name to Mecoy. (past down information) There are many documents and wills where family members signed their name Mecoy. On most all marriage records, tombstones and legal documents it is spelled Mecoy. On many census and war records it is spelled McCoy. It appears on Census records that it was not uncommon to spell it however it sounds and a great example is below:
*1790 census for Craven County, North Carolina
Willis McKoze, Jr. 1 male over 16 including head of household.
Willis McKoze, Sr. 3 males over 16 including head of household
1male under 16
3 females
"**Early documents listing Willis McCoy:
"*Oct-Jan 1761 Willis McKoy served as Grand Juror in Craven County.
"*July 1766 A deed of sale from Thomas Sitreaves Execr. and Ann Cadey Bryan Exx. of Ann Cadey Brayan decd. to Willis Mccoy for One Hundred Acres Land in Craven County was proved in Open Court by the oath of John Freen Evidence therto agreeable to Law and Ordered to be Registered.
"Further notes: (After a trip to North Carolina to do some research I believe that the family actually migrated over from Norfolk County, VA. and were most likely in the colonies since the 1650's when Hugh McCoy arrived a Scottish prisoner from the battle of Worchester, England. I need at this time to go and see land records from this period to make it official. William I am almost certain was the first in Craven County and I'm pretty sure he was Willis's father. I believe this William had a son named William and so did Willis. Unfortunately the confusion from this mulitudes of William goes on and on....... Melissa McCoy-Bell April 2012.)13 Willis McCoy was also known as Willis MeCoy.14 GAV-5.

Willis McCoy began military service on 15 October 1754 at Colonial Soldier, Craven Co., North Carolina, USA, Muster Roll of Captain Thomas Graves' Companyk, Craven County, North Carolina, October 15, 1754
