John and Mary were charter members of theBuckingham Monthly Meeting, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where he wasmemorialized: 'in his youth somewhat airy ... a man of remarkableself-denial and endowed with much mildness ... with loving and kinddeportment.' Neighbors of Robert Scarborough on Smith Creek were the Haworth brothers,Absalom, Stephanus, and James. Their mother was Sarah Scarborough, sisterto Robert. The survey book of John Bayless gives the location of thelands of [p.191]Scarborough and the Haworths on Smith Creek and theDaniel James branch of Smith Creek. With the Haworths to Smith Creekcame their brother John Haworth, though he did not remain therepermanently. This John Haworth was an ancestor of Herbert Clark Hoover,31st President of the United States, as shown by the outline below. 1. Herbert Clark Hoover, born at West Branch, Iowa, August 10, 1874. He was a son of 9. John Scarborough of London, a member of Peel Monthly Meeting. In 1682he came to Bucks County, Pennsylvania., but in 1684 he returned toLondon, where he is buried. Genealogical and Personal Memorial of Mercer County, New Jersey under theeditorial supervision of Francis Bazley Lee John Scarborough, Jr., son of John Scarborough, Sr., was born in England, and came when a youth to this country with his father. It is said he ranaway and resided several years with the Indians, learned their language, and later officiated at Indian treaties as interpreter. He is said tohave at one time averted an Indian war. He is known to have been a greatfriend of the Indians, and to have visited them on religious missions. Hemarried Mary, and although an active member of the Middletown meeting themaiden name of his wife has never been found. In pursuance of the powerof attorney, he sold the Middletown land and obtained a warrant of surveyfor five hundred and ten acres in Solebury, on which he settled about1700. John is thought to be the firstEuropean settler in the Buckingham-Solebury valley of Bucks County,Pennsylvania. Part of his farm was later owned by a third greatgrandson, Isaac Pearson Scarborough. John was a farmer and a minister. He and Mary (Pierson?) were members ofthe Middletown and Falls Monthly Meetings of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. On September 3, 1705 John was condemned by the Falls Monthly Meeting fortoo much Christmas celebrating the previous year. On October 2, 1724 hewas recorded as a minister. Hewas a son of 2. Jesse Clark Hoover and his wife Huldah Minthorn. Huldah was adaughter of 3. Theodore Minthorn and his wife Mary Wasley. Mary was a daughter of 4. Henry Wasley and his wife Ann Toole. Ann was a daughter of 5. Aaron Toole and his wife Rachel Haworth. Rachel was a daughter of 6. John Haworth and his wife Mary Garner, who were members ofBuckingham, Hopewell, Haverford, and Goshen meetings. John Haworth was ason of 7. George Haworth and his wife Sarah Scarborough, members of BuckinghamMonthly Meeting. Sarah was a daughter of 8. John Scarborough and his wife Mary. John settled in Langhorne, BucksCounty, Pennsylvania., in 1682; was a member of Middletown and Fallsmeetings; was founder of Buckingham Monthly Meeting; moved to SoleburyTownship in 1700. A sketch published on p. 244 of Vol. 29 of the Friend indicates that hewas the first white man to settle in Buckingham, Solebury Valley. Thequarterly meeting records mention him as a minister and also in a list offounders eminent for their piety and virtue. He died on his Soleburyplantation, 1 mo. 29, 1727, devising it and the Liberty Lot at Fifth andSpruce streets, Philadelphia, patented to him in 1705 in right of hisfather's purchase of two hundred and fifty acres to his sons: William,John, and Robert.
