      ; per Leo van de Pas: [quote] William Crichton was knighted in May 1424 at the coronation of King James I. He became a Gentleman of the Bedchamber, and in May 1426 sent on an embassy to Norway. On his return he was appointed Keeper of Edinburgh Castle; before April 1435 Master of the Household as well as Sheriff of Edinburgh. He was one of the conservators of a nine years' peace with England as from 1 May 1438.

As Keeper of Edinburgh Castle, he had the young King James II in his power and subsequently was made Chancellor of Scotland in May or June 1439. During a temporary reconciliation with his great rival, Sir Alexander Livingstone, he was one of the chief contrivers in the murder of the Earl of Douglas on 24 November 1440. In 1443 he was dismissed as Chancellor and attainted, while in 1445 he was blockaded in Edinburgh Castle, but surrendered on such advantageous terms that he was pardoned in full.

Between 1443 and 1447 he was made Baron Crichton. He was restored in favour, in 1448 he was re-appointed as Chancellor, a position he held until he died in 1454. In 1448 he received a safe conduct through England to conclude James II's marriage to Marie of Egmond. On 26 August 1449 he founded the collegiate Church at Crichton.

Sir Walter Scott wrote of him as 'a consummate statesman according to the manner of his age---as destitute of faith, mercy, and conscience, as of fear and folly.' [end quote]⁴
