Captain Richard Wright had been appointed attorney for "Robert Tomlin of Rappahanock in Virginia," January 17, 1662, who refers in his letter of that date to "my loveing ffreind Mr Rich: Wright of Chicacone in Virginia"; but Captain Wright assigned his authority to John Hobson. It is shown in the Mottrom chapter that Colonel Isaac Allerton, who succeeded upon the death of Captain Richard Wright to the executorship of the estate of Colonel John Mottrom whose widow, Ursula (Bish) Thompson-Mottrom-Colclough, he married as her fourth husband, referred before the court of Northumberland on August 23, 1664, to

This action by Mr. Richard Wright was probably taken to assist in discouraging the widow of Colonel Mottrom in her efforts to obtain as much as possible of the estate of her second husband, Colonel Mottrom. Hence he acted in the interest of the latter's children, in whose behalf he was always most watchful.

Willoughby-Baylor House (circa 1794)
601 East Freemason Street
Norfolk, VA 23510
757-333-6283

Built on a 200 acre land grant by Thomas Willoughby, this magnificent house is a classic example of Georgian and Federal architecture and it is filled with authentic 18th century furnishings that offer visitors a view of Colonial life for a middle-class family in 18th century Norfolk. A charming 18th century style garden is also located on the grounds

Norfolk History Museum at the Willoughby-Baylor House, 601 East Freemason Street, was built in 1794 by Captain William Willoughby, a descendant of English immigrant Captain Thomas Willoughby I, who was the recipient of a 1636 Royal grant of 200 acres - 50 of which would become the town of Norfolk in 1682. The house remained in the family until 1890 when it was sold. It subsequently fell into decline and was slated for demolition until it was bought and restored by the Norfolk Historic Foundation in 1964.
