Edward Cornell Roberts was born on 20 September 1729 at Merionethshire, Wales, England (now); Immigration record shows an Edward ROBERTS aged 25 in 1756 (i.e., born ca 1731).2,1,6 He married Amanda Louise Barnes in 1752 at Pennsylvania, USA.7,1,3,8
Edward Cornell Roberts died on 26 December 1789 at Three Rivers, St. Joseph Co., Michigan, USA, at age 60.1,3
He was Research Issues
We seem to have evidence of at least five Edward ROBERTS's who may be the same person or similarly named, but different people:
1. Patriarch Edward #78371 (1753-1789), father of Zaccheus #78372 (born in 1753 in PA), Elias #78210, and several other children, and who may have died in MI in 1789.
2. Quaker Edward: I have found four cases of notes in the Quaker Radnor Monthly Meeting records of an Edward ROBERTS in at least 1752 and 1759. However, Immigrant Edward (arriving in 1756), would not have been in at least the 1752 Quaker record. Radnor Monthly Meeting, est. in 1718, is in Delaware Co., PA, next to Chester Co., PA, and consistent with an immigrant arriving in MD.
3. Immigrant Edward: Patriarch Edward could have arrived in the Americas in 1756. The record is just a name and an approximate age, with no other information. However, this arrival date is inconsistent with his PA marriage in 1752 and the proposed DOB for his son Zaccheus (1753), supposedly born in PA.
4. Chester Co. Edward (1770) - from Ancestry’s reconstructed records: There is also the 1770 Chester Co. Edward ROBERTS, who might or might not have been a Quaker (there were many in Chester Co.)
5. Rev War Edward (ca 1776-80?) - This could be Immigrant Edward and/or Chester Co. Edward. It was probably not Quaker Edward. This could be a middle-aged Patriarch Edward #78371. If Patriarch Edward was at least 18 when he married in 1752, he would have been 42 in 1776 and, though a little old, fully eligible for militia service. It is also unlikely that the Quaker Edward was the same Edward who later served in the PA Milita during the Revolution. I had considerable luck researching another PA family line by finding more details regarding their PA militia service (units were often mostly recruited from one township) and the names of others serving concurrently in the same units. This might identify older sons serving with their father, or siblings and in-laws.

Zaccheus Roberts was born on 12 May 1753 at Brownsville Township, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, USA.4,5 He married Nancy Brashears, daughter of Robert Samuel Brashears and Phoebe Nicks, on 11 December 1788 at Pendleton Co., South Carolina, USA.4,6,7
Zaccheus Roberts died on 29 December 1826 at Roane Co., Tennessee, USA, at age 73.4,5,7
Zaccheus Roberts was buried after 29 December 1826 at Roberts Cemetery, Roane Co., Tennessee, USA; from Find A Grave website:
Birth: May 12, 1753, Brownsville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Dec. 29, 1826, Roane County, Tennessee, USA
Zaccheus Roberts was the son of Edward Roberts of Pennsylvania. His mother's name is unknown. Zaccheus was a Revolutionary War Soldier who fought in South Carolina in the war for American Independence. He was in the Battle of Fort Moultrie, the Battle of Hanging Rock and the Battle of Eutaw Springs.
The pension application of Zaccheus's widow, Nancy Brashears Roberts states that he served under the following officers in the war: Capt. Eli Cashaw [Kershaw], Lt. Col. Mason [James Mayson] and Col. Thompson. Records for Capt. Kershaw and Lt. Col. Mason and Col. Thompson state that they were in the 3rd South Carolina Rangers.
Acting upon the best information available at the time, descendants of Zaccheus placed a stone in the Roberts Cemetery believing that was his actual burial place. A notation in the book "Roberts Families of Roane County" by Snyder Roberts, and the fact that several of Zaccheus's children are buried there made identification of his burial place as accurate as could be determined at the time of placement. Zaccheus's good friend, Hezekiah Love, who also served in the Revolutionary War is also buried in the Roberts Cemetery. It has been discovered since that time that the actual burial place of Zaccheus is some distance away on the Zaccheus Roberts homeplace at The Preserve on the Clinch, formerly Rarity Ridge.

Elizabeth married Thomas Nesmith November 29, 1820 in Roane County, TN. Her sister, Nancy Roberts, married Alexander Nesmith, the widowed father of Elizabeth's husband, Thomas. Elizabeth's brother was Isaac Roberts who married Elizabeth Dunaway. These three are the only known siblings to migrate to Alabama out of a family of eleven children born to Zaccheus and Nancy Roberts.
