John Manners 8th Earl of Rutland was born on 10 June 1604 at Aylestone, Leicestershire, England.1 He married Frances Montagu in 1628 at Bamwell Castle, Northamptonshire, England.2
John Manners 8th Earl of Rutland died on 29 September 1679 at Nether Haddon, Leicestershire, England, at age 75.1
John Manners 8th Earl of Rutland was buried after 29 September 1679 at Bottesford, Leicestershire, England.1
; per van de Pas: "John Manners, 8th Earl of Rutland, was born 10 June 1604 at Aylestone, county Leicester, son of Sir George Manners and Grace Pierrepont.
He was admitted to Cambridge (fellow-commoner, Queen's College), Lent 1619; admitted to the Inner Temple, November 1621 (Steward for Christmas, 1626-1628, 1637, 1640; had a licence to travel for three years dated 19 October 1622 and, in 1628 at Barnwell Castle, married Frances Montagu, daughter of Edward Montagu, Baron Montagu, of Boughton, and Frances Cotton.
On 23 April 1623 he succeeded his father to the Haddon estate and, from February 1626 to June 1626 and April to May 1640, was M.P. for Derbyshire. On 7 November 1632 he became High Sheriff of that county. On 29 March 1641 when his second cousin died, he succeeded to the peerage and became 8th Earl of Rutland.
By Ordinance of Parliament, on 5 March 1642, he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire. He was one of the 24 peers who remained at Westminster, in January 1643, when the Parliament was summoned to Oxford. Belvoir Castle, the family seat, was taken by the Royalists in 1643 and stormed in November 1645 by Poyntz for the Parliament. He was appointed a Commissioner for the Parliament to the Kingdom and Estates of Scotland on 13 July 1643, but procured a release for reasons of health. Nominated by Parliament a Commissioner of the Great Seal on 10 November 1643, he was excused for the same reason.
On 6 June 1645 he was appointed on the Committee for Excise and, on 28 July 1645, again as Commissioner to Scotland. From 1646 till 1661 he was Chief Justice in Eyre north of Trent and, on 17 December 1647, appointed on the Committee for Navy and Customs.
Belvoir Castle was garrisoned for the Parliament but, on the advice of the Council of State in May 1649, it was dismantled. The Earl, who received £1500 compensation, after this lived chiefly at Nether Haddon, Derbyshire. After the Restoration he rebuilt Belvoir, completing the work in 1668. From 5 February 1667 till June 1677, he was Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire.
On 19 May 1671 he lost his wife and he himself died on 29 September 1679 at Nether Haddon, to be buried at Bottesford."1
