Mr. Bragg joined Company K of the Fourth Alabama Regiment at New Market during October, 1864, at the age of 17. Joining late in the struggle, he was never in any of the important battles of the remaining nine months, but spent his time as a member of Joe Wheeler's Brigade stationed here in North Alabama. He aided in breaking up a Yankee renegade force under Captain John Sparks, who was hung after the surrender. The encounter occurred in Jackson County, and ended after the Confederates killed and captured so many of the enemy that the organization was permanently disbanded. Mr. Bragg was a member of the small force of Rebels which, under the command of Captain Frank peppered a train load of Yankees with buckshot up in the northern part of the county, killing seven of the enemy. While reconnoitering with Dr. "Meg" Robinson, another local recruit on the old Flem Rigney Place above Maysville, the veteran and his companion captured seven pickets, without firing a shot, by sneaking in upon them early in the morning. Mr. Bragg surrendered at New Market on May 11, 1865. (provided by Joe Swift from his sister Peggy Swift's archives)
