BIRTH     28 Feb 1866, Ronald Township, Ionia County, Michigan, USA
DEATH     15 Sep 1919 (aged 53), Lake Odessa, Ionia County, Michigan, USA
The Lake Odessa Wave, Friday, September 19, 1919
Mrs. M. M. Armstrong, Sr., who had a lingering illness which has baffled medical skill for months, was taken with a stroke of paralysis last week and although conscious at times was too weak to rally and succumbed Monday morning. Mrs. Armstrong was a very ambitious energetic woman, always in a hurry to get things done and always had a smile while at her duties when able to work. She was a popular charter member of the Royal Neighbor lodge here. She was highly respected by all, and dearly loved by her friends, her sweet loving disposition endearing her to all who became acquainted with. her. Her family has the sympathy of a wide circle of friends and acquaintances.
Bertha Dickerson was born in Ronald Township, Ionia County, February 28th, 1866. Died at her home in Lake Odessa September 15th, 1919. She was married to Mathew M. Armstrong December 24, 1884. To them were born two boys, Mathew M. Jr., and Morrice D. She was converted when a girl of 15 or 16 years of age, and lived the Christian life ever since, passing to the great beyond with her faith strong in God. She never united with any of the churches of Lake Odessa, but had been a member of the Disciple church in Ionia.
Besides the husband and two sons who are left to mourn their loss is the mother, two brothers and two sisters. She was a woman who was loved by all who knew her. Of an unusual sunny disposition, never complaining; even when her body was racked with pain she had a smile for those around her.
Those from out of town who were in attendance at the funeral were: Mrs. Chas. Hoyt and Mrs. D. R. Hoyt of Detroit, sister and niece of the deceased; Mrs. D. O. Cassel of Denver, Colorado, a sister; Jas. J. Dickerson of Stanton, a brother; Alden Carpenter of Pinkney, an uncle; and the following near relatives: Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lake of Pinkney; Mr. and Mrs. H. N. Talcott of Saranac; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Turner of Palo; Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Robertson, Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Turner, Mrs. Theodore Lehman, Mrs. Florence Johnson and Mrs. Myrtle Peck, all of Ionia.

Founder of Delta Chi Fraternity, October 13, 1890 at Cornell University
Albert Sullard Barnes was born on 13 January 1869 in Franklin, New York. While a student at Cornell, he and others founded a law organization which became Delta Chi Fraternity.
After graduating with the LL.B. degree in 1891, Barnes joined a series of successful law firms in Binghamton, New York. He practiced law in that city until 1931 when he retired to Franklin.
Barnes was one of only a few of the founders who continued to work closely with the fraternity. He was a frequent guest of the Cornell chapter speaking at banquets and other functions. One of his best known quotations was: “Delta Chi is not a weekend or once-a-year affair but a lifelong opportunity and privilege.”

Other organizations which Barnes joined include the Freemasons, the Shriners, the Scottish Rite, and the Redmen. He served on several corporate boards of directors. His hobbies included trout fishing and all outdoor activities. He was a lifelong member of the Franklin fisherman’s club. A member of the Congregationalist church, he was active in the local church as well as the state convention.
Barnes died 17 July 1935 in Franklin, New York, at age 66 in the same house where he had been born. He is buried in his wife’s, Katharine Heermans’ family plot.

In her 25 April 1872 will, Eunice (MNU) GRIFFIN leaves much of her estate to her daughter, Louisa, and then specifies that on Louisa's death, her share should go to Louisa's daughter "Edith Griffin and upon her death [Eidith's] her portion shall go to her heirs on her mother's side and it is herebyexpressly provided that no portion of this property shall under any circumstances descend to James Wakely of Hebron, Ill or any of his descendants of his except Edith Griffin above mentioned."
