Alexander Armstrong Jr. was born on 16 March 1763 at Cumberland Township, Greene Co., Pennsylvania, USA;      Date from Find A Grave. Also Based on Alexander aged "upwards of seventy years" in his 1832 affidavits for George Armstrong's and John McLean's Rev War pension applications (1832 - 70= 1762).
Alexander's census ages are recorded as follows:
1790 Mifflin Co., PA      b bef 1774
1800 Seneca, Ontario Co., NY      b bef 1756
1820 Seneca, Ontario Co., NY      b bef 1776
1830 Seneca, Ontario Co., NY      b 1761-1770
1840 Freedom, Washtenaw Co., MI      b 1761-1770
1850 Lodi, Washtenaw Co., MI      Aged 87 b. PA
     A presumed year of birth of 1763 matches all but the 1800 cenus. His age in the 1800 census may simply have been recorded in error.2,1,3,4,5,6,7,8 He married Mary Murray on 1 March 1781 at Northeast Madison Township, Perry Co., Pennsylvania, USA;
There is a 1781 marriage record for an Alexander Armstrong and a Mary Murray, but land documents listing an Alexander and Margaret Armstrong seem to indicate that he married a woman named Margaret. There is also a 1795 deed of an Alexander Armstrong Junior of Nottingham Township, Washington Co., PA "and Mary his wife" selling land to a William Thomson of "Fermanah" There is a 1781 marriage record for an Alexander Armstrong and a Mary Murray, but land documents listing an Alexander and Margaret Armstrong seem to indicate that he married a woman named Margaret. There is also a 1795 deed of an Alexander Armstrong Junior There is a 1781 marriage record for an Alexander Armstrong and a Mary Murray, but land documents listing an Alexander and Margaret Armstrong seem to indicate that he married a woman named Margaret. There is also a 1795 deed of an Alexander Armstrong Junior of Nottingham Township, Washington Co., PA "and Mary his wife" selling land to a William Thomson of "Fermanah" There is a 1781 marriage record for an Alexander Armstrong and a Mary Murray, but land documents listing an Alexander and Margaret Armstrong seem [sic] township, Mifflin Co. This is a "parcel of land whereon Alexander Armstrong Senior now lives on ... in the township of Fermanah ... Mifflin Co. ... bordered by lands of Epenetus Hart now Robert McMeans and ... Hugh McAllister... survey made to the said Alexander Armstrong Senior containing two hundred and fifty eight acres ... in pursuance of an application by Sd Alexander Armstrong Junior Dated twenty seventh day of April one thousand seven hundred sixty seven and numbered 3513..."
Furthermore, the first Fermanagh tax record that appears to show young Alexander Armstrong is that of 1785 in which he is listed as a "Freeman", implying he was single and/or without land at that time.
However, it appears that his first son, John D., was born ca 1798 as his grave marker (seen on Find A Grave) says he d. in 1864, aged 66 years.
Alexander married Grizzel Chapman in New York in 1816, and all of his other known children were forn in 1817, or later.
Conclusion: If John D. was in fact the son of Alexander, then Alexander must have had a first marriage ca 1798 or earlier. His wife could have been named Mary Murray or Margaret LNU.9,10,11,12 Alexander Armstrong Jr. married Margaret (?) before 1788; There is a 1781 marriage record for an Alexander Armstrong and a Mary Murray, but a 1788 land reecord listing an "Alexander and Margaret Armstrong" that seems to indicate that he married a woman named Margaret. There is also a 1798 land document that listed his wife as Mary.10 Alexander Armstrong Jr. married Grissel Chapman, daughter of Lieut. James Chapman and Abigail Sherwood, on 21 April 1816; from Chapman [1854:227] "GRISSEL CHAPMAN, daughter of Lieut. James Chapman, born July 3, 1788, was married to Alexander Armstrong of New York, April 21, 1816."13,14,15
Alexander Armstrong Jr. died on 9 March 1857 at Washtenaw Co., Michigan, USA, at age 93.2
Alexander Armstrong Jr. was buried after 9 March 1857 at Lodi Cemetery, Saline, Washtenaw Co., Michigan, USA,

Alexander Armstrong Jr. was also known as Alexander Armstrong.2

; It is possible that the son Robert, named in his uncle's 1783 will, and the son Alexander fils are in fact the same person. The estimated years of birth are similar. No mention of Robert was found after his mention as a minor in the 1783 and Alexander appears in the 1785 county transcript for Fermanagh, (then) Cumberland Co. and in the
1790 Mifflin Co. census.11,16,17,18

; per Kathy Alvis Patterson:
"Was this man, the brother of James, the same as Alexander Armstrong, a Revolutionary War veteran from Pennsylvania, with a documented much younger, second wife, Grissel Chapman, who died in Washtenaw Co MI? If his stated birthdate is correct, he could not have been a brother of James Armstrong of Geneva NY, since both were born in 1763. Based on county of origin in PA, it is probable this man was a brother of the Benton NY family. At first glance, this was one man, in Seneca Twp in 1800 with a young son and older daughters, alone in 1810, but remarried before 1820 and was rejoined at that time by two sons 16-26. But I now think these census records refer to the man from PA. See below for more details...
Alexander Armstrong, a Revolutionary War veteran from Pennsylvania, who married Grissel Chapman and died in Washtenaw Co MI, was, based on county of origin in PA, probably a brother of the Benton NY family. This Alexander in 1820 was in the same town where another Armstrong family resided, with a wife, two sons 16-26, one daughter 10-16, and two new babies, a girl and a boy. Washtenaw Co and Ionia Co MI histories indicate he had a total of seven children, including a probable oldest son, John D Armstrong."
Ms Patterson cites other evidence that implies that the two Alexanders are the same people:
"Alexander and Grissel had a daughter Elizabeth. From Pioneer Ancestors, Salt Lake City Chapter SUP, at Ancestry.com: “Elizabeth Armstrong Born 2 Apr. 1819 in Seneca Castle, Ontario County, New York Arrived in Salt Lake Valley in 1851. Elizabeth Armstrong was the daughter of Alexander Armstrong and Grissel Chapman. A number of residents in the Ontario County area of New York state went in a body to Michigan and took up land there. Records of the First Presbyterian Church in Saline, Michigan, show a petition to the New York Church by some of the departing church members for permission to start a branch of the church in Michigan. Alexander and Grissel Armstrong are listed as members of the First Presbyterian Church in Saline, Michigan. The Armstrongs settled in Lodi, Washtenaw Co MI, and Alexander Armstrong is shown as one of the first persons to apply for land there.” Elizabeth and her husband Hiram Mace, became Mormons and moved to Utah.

A short biography of son George Armstrong in History of Washtenaw County, Michigan, 1881, page 1187, at Ancestry.com, reads: “George Armstrong (deceased) was born near Geneva, N.Y., and in his youth followed agricultural pursuits. He came to this county, and settled in Lodi tp., where he bought a farm of 200 acres, residing on this property until his death, which occurred in 1868. He is buried on Lodi Plains. Mrs Armstrong, who still survives, is a resident of Ypsilanti tp., and the mother of four children—Frank, who was born in 1856, and in 1877 purchased the “McBain farm” of 87 acres; Clara, born in 1859; Emma, born in 1862, and Georgia, who was born in 1868.”
"Another daughter was Emily J, who married an Armstrong, but not apparently a close family member: Portrait and biographical album of Ionia and Montcalm Counties, Mich, 1891, accessed at Ancestry.com, page 771: “The wife of Mr Wurster was born in Ontario county, N.Y., March 22, 1828 [questionable-KP], and is a daughter of Alexander and Grizle (Chapman) Armstrong. He father was a native of Pennsylvania and her mother of Connecticut, and the paternal ancestors were Scotch. Her mother’s father was a Revolutionary War soldier. She remained in her native State until she was eight years old, when she came with her parents to Washnetaw County where Mr. and mrs. Armstrong died. Mr Armstrong had been twice married and was the father of seven children but two of whom are now living: Elizabeth, wife of Hiram Mace, in Utah, and Emily J., wife of our subject. The latter grew to maturity in this State and in 1850 was married to M.M. Armstrong, who died in 1859, leaving her with four children.”.19

; My attribution of John D. as a son of Alexander Armstrong, Jr. is due to the following:
1. Per the 1850 census, he was born in NY, where Alexander would have been living ca 1798.
2. Alexander and John D. are four lines apart on p. 149 of the 1840 census for Freedom, Washtenaw Co., MO.
3. John D. appears on p. 496b (household 14) of the 1850 census for Lodi, Washtenaw Co., MO, while Alexander Armstrong, Jr. is only a few pages later on p. 498b (household 33).20,21,8,22

; I have become convinced that the migrant to New York was a son of this Alexander pater familias, also named Alexander (fils), who appeared in the 1790 census and then migrated to New York with his brothers James and George. This change was brought about by two facts:
1.     George ARMSTRONG's 1832 application for a Revolutionary War pension is supported by an affidavit by an Alexander Armstrong who affirms that he is the brother of this George.
2.     The households of the Alexander in the 1790 Mifflin Co. census and in the 1800 Seneca Town, Ontario Co., New York census appear me to be too small and too young to match the Alexander who was father of Sarah, James, Mary, George and Robert, as well as of a sixth child, Alexander fils.
3.     There are two Alexander Armstrongs reported in the 1785 County Transcript for Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania: one a landowner and a second "Freeman".
G A Vaut, 8 August 2015.23
Alexander Armstrong Jr. was mentioned in a land transaction on 27 April 1767 at Fermanagh Township, Cumberland Co. (now Juniata Co.), Pennsylvania, USA,
Memo: NOTE: Several of these documents (warrant, survey #2) refer to Alexander Armstrong, Junior. I originally believed that these actually referred to Alexander Sr and not Alexander Jr because I thought then Alexander2 would have been a very young child in 1767 when the warrant was written. However, I now believe that this is indeed Alexander Jr because I have found later deeds involving the transfer of this tract (1782, 1795) and that mention both Alexander Sr and Alexander Jr. GA Vaut 30 Dec. 2015

Alexander Armstrong Jr. and Alexander Armstrong Sr. were mentioned in a land transaction on 13 May 1782 at Lost Creek Settlement, Fermanagh Township, Mifflin Co. (now Juniata Co.), Pennsylvania, USA,
Memo: In this deed of 13 May 1782, Alexander Junior sells to Alexander Senior for 100 pounds the plot of land that Alex Sr is living on in Lost Creek Settlement. The size of the tract is not mentioned. This plot adjoins the lands of Epenetus Hart and Hugh McAllister. This seems to be the plot of land that is later sold to William Thomson on 22 Aug 1795. This may be the land seen on the survey map for Thomas Howard's 1994 warrant, which shows his land next to that of Alexander Armstrong and Hugh McAllister.29

Alexander Armstrong Jr. and Margaret (?) were mentioned in a land transaction on 14 January 1788 at Beaver Dam, Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania, USA,
Memo: NOTE: There are 1787 & 1788 warrant transactions by: 1) Thos Howard, John McLean and George Armstrong; and 2) Alexander and Margaret Armstrong for land in Beaver Dam Township "adjoining land of Epenetus Hart". This probably refers to land warranted to Epenetus in a 1787 warrant. This may also be the location that Ellis & Hungerford [1886:839] refer to when they state that Epenetus is not found in the Fermanagh area after 1791 and "probably moved to his lands in Beaver Dam Township." I now believe that this Alexander and Margaret Armstrong are Alexander Junior and his wife. See http://mapq.st/1GNdPFl for map of location of Beaver Dam, PA.

; from Cleveland [1873:300]: "During the last year or two of the eighteenth century, there came a colony of settlers from Pennsylvania, who located in east Benton, some of them in what is now Torrey. Among them was Anthony Trimmer, who was descended from Scotch or Irish people, who had settled an early colony in Northumberland county, Pa. His wife was Sarah Howard, a sister of Thomas Howard, also an early settler and noted citizen, who resided about one mile north of Hopeton. The Armstrongs, Harts, McLeans, Howards and Trimmers were all members of the same colony."55

Memo: This is a deed dated 22 Aug 1795 (but recorded 26 Apr 1808) by Alexander Armstrong Junior and his wife Mary selling a tract of 258 acres in Fermanagh for 100 pounds to William Thomson. It states that Alexander Armstrong Senior now lives on this land and that it borders lands of Epenetus Hart and Hugh McAllister and was apparently originally surveyed by Alex Senior and then transfered to Alex Junior sometime around 27 April 1767 when Junior had it surveyed. Pauline Henry speculates that this may have been a wedding gift to Alex Junior.
