     Furthermore, the first Fermanagh tax record that appears to show young Alexander Armstrong is that of 1785 in which he is listed as a "Freeman", implying he was single and/or without land at that time.
     However, it appears that his first son, John D., was born ca 1798 as his grave marker (seen on Find A Grave) says he d. in 1864, aged 66 years.
Alexander married Grizzel Chapman in New York in 1816, and all of his other known children were forn in 1817, or later.
Conclusion: If John D. was in fact the son of Alexander, then Alexander must have had a first marriage ca 1798 or earlier. His wife could have been named Mary Murray or Margaret LNU.^9,10,11,12 Alexander Armstrong Jr. married Margaret (?) before 1788

     Alexander Armstrong Jr. was also known as Alexander Armstrong.²

; It is possible that the son Robert, named in his uncle's 1783 will, and the son Alexander fils are in fact the same person. The estimated years of birth are similar. No mention of Robert was found after his mention as a minor in the 1783 and Alexander appears in the 1785 county transcript for Fermanagh, (then) Cumberland Co. and in the
1790 Mifflin Co. census.^11,16,17,18

     "Was this man, the brother of James, the same as Alexander Armstrong, a Revolutionary War veteran from Pennsylvania, with a documented much younger, second wife, Grissel Chapman, who died in Washtenaw Co MI? If his stated birthdate is correct, he could not have been a brother of James Armstrong of Geneva NY, since both were born in 1763. Based on county of origin in PA, it is probable this man was a brother of the Benton NY family. At first glance, this was one man, in Seneca Twp in 1800 with a young son and older daughters, alone in 1810, but remarried before 1820 and was rejoined at that time by two sons 16-26. But I now think these census records refer to the man from PA. See below for more details...
     Alexander Armstrong, a Revolutionary War veteran from Pennsylvania, who married Grissel Chapman and died in Washtenaw Co MI, was, based on county of origin in PA, probably a brother of the Benton NY family. This Alexander in 1820 was in the same town where another Armstrong family resided, with a wife, two sons 16-26, one daughter 10-16, and two new babies, a girl and a boy. Washtenaw Co and Ionia Co MI histories indicate he had a total of seven children, including a probable oldest son, John D Armstrong."
Ms Patterson cites other evidence that implies that the two Alexanders are the same people:
     "Alexander and Grissel had a daughter Elizabeth. From Pioneer Ancestors, Salt Lake City Chapter SUP, at Ancestry.com: “Elizabeth Armstrong Born 2 Apr. 1819 in Seneca Castle, Ontario County, New York Arrived in Salt Lake Valley in 1851. Elizabeth Armstrong was the daughter of Alexander Armstrong and Grissel Chapman. A number of residents in the Ontario County area of New York state went in a body to Michigan and took up land there. Records of the First Presbyterian Church in Saline, Michigan, show a petition to the New York Church by some of the departing church members for permission to start a branch of the church in Michigan. Alexander and Grissel Armstrong are listed as members of the First Presbyterian Church in Saline, Michigan. The Armstrongs settled in Lodi, Washtenaw Co MI, and Alexander Armstrong is shown as one of the first persons to apply for land there.” Elizabeth and her husband Hiram Mace, became Mormons and moved to Utah.

A short biography of son George Armstrong in History of Washtenaw County, Michigan, 1881, page 1187, at Ancestry.com, reads: “George Armstrong (deceased) was born near Geneva, N.Y., and in his youth followed agricultural pursuits. He came to this county, and settled in Lodi tp., where he bought a farm of 200 acres, residing on this property until his death, which occurred in 1868. He is buried on Lodi Plains. Mrs Armstrong, who still survives, is a resident of Ypsilanti tp., and the mother of four children—Frank, who was born in 1856, and in 1877 purchased the “McBain farm” of 87 acres; Clara, born in 1859; Emma, born in 1862, and Georgia, who was born in 1868.”
     "Another daughter was Emily J, who married an Armstrong, but not apparently a close family member: Portrait and biographical album of Ionia and Montcalm Counties, Mich, 1891, accessed at Ancestry.com, page 771: “The wife of Mr Wurster was born in Ontario county, N.Y., March 22, 1828 [questionable-KP], and is a daughter of Alexander and Grizle (Chapman) Armstrong. He father was a native of Pennsylvania and her mother of Connecticut, and the paternal ancestors were Scotch. Her mother’s father was a Revolutionary War soldier. She remained in her native State until she was eight years old, when she came with her parents to Washnetaw County where Mr. and mrs. Armstrong died. Mr Armstrong had been twice married and was the father of seven children but two of whom are now living: Elizabeth, wife of Hiram Mace, in Utah, and Emily J., wife of our subject. The latter grew to maturity in this State and in 1850 was married to M.M. Armstrong, who died in 1859, leaving her with four children.”.¹⁹

; My attribution of John D. as a son of Alexander Armstrong, Jr. is due to the following:
1. Per the 1850 census, he was born in NY, where Alexander would have been living ca 1798.
2. Alexander and John D. are four lines apart on p. 149 of the 1840 census for Freedom, Washtenaw Co., MO.
3. John D. appears on p. 496b (household 14) of the 1850 census for Lodi, Washtenaw Co., MO, while Alexander Armstrong, Jr. is only a few pages later on p. 498b (household 33).^20,21,8,22

; I have become convinced that the migrant to New York was a son of this Alexander pater familias, also named Alexander (fils), who appeared in the 1790 census and then migrated to New York with his brothers James and George. This change was brought about by two facts:
1.     George ARMSTRONG's 1832 application for a Revolutionary War pension is supported by an affidavit by an Alexander Armstrong who affirms that he is the brother of this George.
2.     The households of the Alexander in the 1790 Mifflin Co. census and in the 1800 Seneca Town, Ontario Co., New York census appear me to be too small and too young to match the Alexander who was father of Sarah, James, Mary, George and Robert, as well as of a sixth child, Alexander fils.
3.     There are two Alexander Armstrongs reported in the 1785 County Transcript for Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania: one a landowner and a second "Freeman".

Memo: In this deed of 13 May 1782, Alexander Junior sells to Alexander Senior for 100 pounds the plot of land that Alex Sr is living on in Lost Creek Settlement. The size of the tract is not mentioned. This plot adjoins the lands of Epenetus Hart and Hugh McAllister. This seems to be the plot of land that is later sold to William Thomson on 22 Aug 1795. This may be the land seen on the survey map for Thomas Howard's 1994 warrant, which shows his land next to that of Alexander Armstrong and Hugh McAllister.²⁹

Memo: This is a deed dated 22 Aug 1795 (but recorded 26 Apr 1808) by Alexander Armstrong Junior and his wife Mary selling a tract of 258 acres in Fermanagh for 100 pounds to William Thomson. It states that Alexander Armstrong Senior now lives on this land and that it borders lands of Epenetus Hart and Hugh McAllister and was apparently originally surveyed by Alex Senior and then transfered to Alex Junior sometime around 27 April 1767 when Junior had it surveyed. Pauline Henry speculates that this may have been a wedding gift to Alex Junior.

This Indenture made in the twenty second day of August anno Domini one thousand seven hundred ninety five Between Alexander Armstrong Junior of Nottingham township in the County of Washington in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Mary his wife of the one part, and William Thomson of Fermanah [sic] township in the County of Mifflin of Commonwealth aforesd of the other part. Witnesseth that he the said Alexander Armstrong Junr and Mary his wife for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred pounds lawful money of the said Commonwealth to them in hand paid by the said William Thomason the accept whereof is hereby acknowledged and other good causes of consideration moving them the said Alexander Armstrong Junr & Mary his wife thereunto have granted bargained sold aliened & confirmed and by these presents doth grant bargain sell alien & confirm unto the sd William Thomason his heirs and assigns all and singular a certain tract piece & parcel of land whereon Alexander Armstrong Senior now lives on situate & being on the south bounded of Lost Creek in the township of Fermanah [sic] in the County of Mifflin aforesd, bounded by lands of lately Epenetus Hart now Robert McMeans on the west Hugh McAllister on the North & the Cedar Spring ridge or slate survey made of the said Alexander Armstrong Senior on the south containing two hundred & fifty eight acres and the usual allowance of six per ct for roads of which tract of land was surveyed in pursuance of an application by Sd Alexander Armstrong Junr dated twenty seventh day of April one thousand seven hundred sixty seven & Numbered 3513.      "On this twenty eighth day of September 1832 personally appeared in open court, before the Judges of the court of common pleas of said county now sitting, George Armstrong a resident in the Town of Benton, in the county and state aforesaid, aged upwards of seventy one years, who being first duly sworn according to Law, doth on his oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress, passed June 7, 1832.
     "That he entered the service of the United States under the following named offices and serve as her-in stated viz: That he was drafted and was mustered on the 23rd day of December 1776 at the Town of Juniatta [sic] in the County of Cumberland in Pensylvania [sic] where he then resided, in the Company of Militia commanded by Captain James Gibson, marched to Philadelphia & from thence to Trenton and Princeton in New Jersey, where he was under command of General Putnam, served two months and was discharged, but did not reach home until the tenth day, which term he served as Sergeant.
     "That in the year 1778 at Juniatta aforesaid he was drafted in Captain Matiers Company in Colonel Smiths Regiment, in General Lacys Brigade of Militia for two months, went to the Crooked Billet near Philadelphia, served out the two months and was discharged at Dowlstown, Bucks County.
     "That in the year 1780 at the same place he was again drafted in the Company of Captain Hurl, under Major Elliot, was on duty, principally in Northumberland County, for two months and was honorably discharged.
     "That after the War of the revolution he removed to the Town of Benton State of New York where he now resides and has resided upwards of Thirty Years.
     "That he has no documentary evidence of his services and knows of no person who can testify to his service except John McLean and Alexr Armstrong who affidavits are hereto attached.
     "He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present, and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the Agency of any State.
     "Sworn and subscribed, in open court the day and yeare aforesaid. George Armstrong T. J. Nevins Dep. Clerk
     "Mr. John Goff a clergyman and Morris F Sheppard of the County of Yates hereby certify, that we are well acquainted with George Armstrong, who has subscribed and sworn to the above declaration; that we believe him to be upwards of Seventy one years of age; the he is reputed and believed in the neighbourhood [sic] where he resides, to have been a Soldier of the Revolution, and that we concur in that opinion.

     "And the said Court do hereby declare their opinion after the investigation of the matter, and after puting [sic] the interrogatories prescribed by the War Department, that the above named applicant was a Revolutionary Soldier and served as he states. And the Court further certifies, that it appears to them that John Goff a clergyman of Benton & Morris F Sheppard of Milo who have signed the preceeding certificate are residents of the said county of Yates. That they are credible persons and that their statement is entitled to credit.

That his said brother was at several different times in the service of the United States, during the Revolutionary War. The first time about the time the Hessians were taken at Trenton, afterwards under Captain Hurl and Captain Matiers, but does not recollect the date.
     "The first tour of duty said George left home at Christmas and returned in March following.
     "That for the second and third tours said George was drafted for two months each.
     "Deponent is now upwards of seventy years of age. Deponent and said George then resided in the Juniatta [sic] in Cumberland County Pensylvania [sic].

Bayly, a Public Notary for said County and State personally appeared Jon McLean of Benton in the County of Yates, and made oath in due form of Law, that he has been long acquainted with George Armstrong of said town and knew him previously to the Revolutionary War - say said Armstrong in the Service of the united States in the Militia, at Philadelphia in the Winter of 1776-7; who was then on a tour of duty to New Jersey.
