Dr. James Lewis Perdue
As he lived, so this good man passed away, quietly and gently. From a stroke sustained Wednesday Evening he never rallied and late Saturday afternoon he breathed his last. His devoted wife and children were with him, his only brother, and other relatives and sympathizing friends. For several years he has been in very feeble health. Never complained, was always cheerful, and so the days passed while he realized that his strength was less.
Dr. Perdue was the son of Mr. James H. Perdue and his wife, Jane Franklin. He was born Feb. 19, 1851 in Butler County, lived with his parents for a while in Lowndes then in Greenville where his parents moved soon after the War Between the States. He attended the local achools, then the Alabama Polythenic Institute at Auburn. He later attended the Medical College in Mobile where he graduated in 1875. Returning home he began the practice of medicine, building his practice on a solid foundation of efficient service, faithful attention,
kindness and patience. It was often said that children loved him so they took his visits as their pleasure. He stopped to pet little children on the street and in the sick room they instinctively trusted and loved him. Friends said of him that they knew no man who led a finer, more upright, cleaner life. His influence was all for good and his record as citizen one worthy of emulation.
Dr. Perdue was the eldest of six sons born to Mr. & Mrs. J. H. Perdue. Only one, Mr. B. S. Perdue, is left. The love of the brothers were strong and tender. As the eldest, the brothers looked to him for counsel and he never failed them. Just as he had surrounded his parents with gentle protection and care in their declining years, so he always remembered and loved those near him. As husband and father, Dr. Perdue's home life was of the tenderest and most faithful. He gave his wife and children love, comforts and protection,
forgetful of self in making them happy.
For twenty-five years Dr. Perdue served the city and county as health officer, and his efficient work was known and appreciated by the medical society of the county.
Dr. Perdue was a loyal member of the Methodist Church. The pastor being ill the service Sunday afternoon was conducted by Rev. H. R. Arnold and Rev. E. A. Mohn, Jr. at the residence, where sorrowing relatives and friends gathered. Many beautiful floral offerings were carried to Magnolia Cemetery and placed on the mound where one of Butler's best loved citizens sleeps.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Eva Wright Perdue, with whom he had lived happily since marriage on the fourth of February, 1880: and two children, Dr. W. Lewis Perdue and Mrs. J. Edward Barnes.
