Confederate Sergeant Elijah McClanahan Ingles
4th Virginia Infantry Regiment, Company G, "Wise County Fencibles"
The word "fencible" is an old military term derived from the word "defencible" and is used to describe voluntary military units formed to defend against invasion.
In this photo from the Civil War Sergeant Ingles is wearing a cap with the acronym "W.F." for the "Wise Fencibles", the name of one of the local military units of Wise County, Virginia. Nearly cut off camera is a Virginia State belt buckle with the motto "Sic Semper Tyrannis" or "Thus Always to Tyrants".
May we never forget the sacrifice of our brave Virginia soldiers who served in defense of our state during that war.

CAPTAIN WILLIAM INGLES.
On the evening of April 14, 1920, Captain William Ingles fell asleep in Jesus at his home at Radford, Va., in the seventy-fifth year of his age. He was born February 16, 1846, the son of Thomas and Catherine Mcclanahan Ingles. Captain Ingles was educated at Washington and Lee University, where he specialized in civil engineering, to which profession he devoted the greater part of his life. After completing his course he returned to Montgomery County, the land sacred to him as the birthplace of his ancestors. Here, which is now known as Radford, he made his home until his death.
Captain Ingles entered the Confederate Army the latter part of the war, although under military age at that time. Here he served in Company E, Twenty-fifth Virginia Calvary, until he was taken prisoner six months before the close of the war.
In December 1888, he married Miss Minnie Snow, who with his two brothers, Messrs. A.L. and E.M. Ingles, and a large number of relatives and friends, are left to mourn his loss.
On January 10, 1875, Captain Ingles united with the New River Presbyterian church since organized into the Radford church. Later on in the same year he was elected and ordained an elder, and for forty-five years he had faithfully served the church he loved so well. For a long time he had been the clerk of the session and always discharged the duties of this office with painstaking care.
Captain Ingles was a man of strong character. His genial, magnetic personality attracted all classes to him. He thought vigorously on all the vital questions of the day and could be depended upon to arrive at sound conclusions. Men, recognizing his ability, gladly followed his leadership. It is not strange, therefore, that he took a prominent part in all the business, civic, and social affairs of his community. No important movement was ever set on foot without his council and cooperation having been sought.
His church and her interests, however, claimed his deepest devotion. To her he gave unstintingly of his time, his energy, and his means. He was always to be found in his place at all the services of the sanctuary. He was a familiar figure at the meetings of the church courts and served on many of the important committees.
He was especially interested in the cause of Christian education, and for years had been a member of the Board of Trustees of Washington and Lee University, Stonewall Jackson College, and Harris Mountain Schools.In all the relations his soundness of judgement and tenacity to principals coupled with his gentle courtesy and meekness of spirit, won for him the love, admiration, and trust of his co-laborers.
It may be truly said of him, "His was a successful life"; successful in business, successful as the head of a happy home, successful as holding a place of honor and usefulness in his community and church. We shall ever treasure his memory as one whom we loved and the example of his life will abide with us as a constant inspiration.
"Servant of God, well done,
Rest from thy loved employ;
The battle fought, the battle won,
Enter thy Master's joy."
