Smith, Herbert F. "John Strickland of Long Island and his sons-in-law". In The American Genealogist, v. 11, pp. 81-87, 206-208: The Smith Connection: Through research conducted by Mr. James F. Morton of Patterson, New Jersey, Mr. Combes, Town Historian of Hempstead, N.Y., and Mr. Arthur S. Wardwell, of Brooklyn, N.Y., the connections of certain Smiths resident in Hempstead and in Jamaica, New York, in the early part of the seventeenth century have been in great part clarified and delimited.
John Smith, son-in-law of John Strickland, has been proven to be the one characterized as "Blue" in the records of Hempstead township. he was one of the earliest residents of that place and a contemporary of John Smith, "Rock," from whom he was distinguished not only by the above appellation but occasionally as "junior" in contrast to the other's "senior." Subsequently, several other John Smiths appear in the vicinity, and the ubiquity of the name compelled the town clerk of Hempstead to classify them by their current nicknames. It is fortunate that this was done, otherwise the problem of disentangling one John Smith from another would be insuperable.
John Smith "Blue" is of record in various town lists and in the official rate list of 1683. He was a shoemaker, and attained to a position of some prominence in the community. He was elected constable April 1, 1676; and was one of four delegates sent to the Governor at New York to treat concerning the town lands.
His relationship to John Strickland is cited in the published tabulation and synopsis of official documents on file with the Secretary of State at Albany, N.Y., and this reference is extended in the printed Town Records of North and South Hempstead, vol. 1, p. 331 and in those following, and at p. 360. In the documents listed by the Secretary of State are warrants to the constable of Hempstead to summon Robert Williams and John Ellison to answer the complaint of John Smith, Mr. Strickland's son-in-law, at the Jamaica Court of Sessions, June 3, 1678. (27:121). In the subsequent litigation this John Smith is called John Smith "Blue" and John Smith "Junior." From the latter it is inferred as stated, that this was to distinguish him from John Smith, "Rock."
A John Smith "Junior" died March 12, 1683, but the inventory of his estate, together with the continued appearance of John Smith "Blue" in Hempstead town records, show that these were not identical. This John Smith "Junior" is believed to be son of John Smith "Rock."
The Hempstead Land Reports of 1727-1742 (printed town records, vol. VIII) mention lands transferred to Abel Smith from the property of John Smith "Junior" and John Smith "Blue," junior. Abel Smith appears with others in the Hempstead, New York, 1698 Census in the family of a John Smith who presumably had a wife Sarah (unfortunately this record gives no nickname for John Smith); and he is without question the Abel Smith who married (second) Deborah Udall at Jamaica, January 15, 1715. [footnote: Cf. The American Genealogist, vol. X, p. 206] Abel Smith was born in 1671, and therefore he was a youth in the family of John Smith in 1698.
It may be inferred from the foregoing that Abel Smith was a descendant of John Smith "Blue." In Queens' County Deeds, Liber 2, at p. 253 appears a statement concerning "land mostly laid out to John Smith Blue now in possession of Abel Smith," reinforcing this conclusion. From the dates, it is reasonable to suppose that he was grandson [footnote: The writer acknowledges with many thanks the kind assistance of Mr. Morton and his colleagues in Smith research, but assumes personal responsibility for the conclusions suggested above, realizing that some of these are tentative, and may be subject to possible revision.] of John Smith "Blue," and that the family in the census included members of both antecedent generations. If the wife of John Smith "Blue" (senior) is the Sarah Smith recorded in the 1698 Census, it would provide the given name of this daughter of John Strickland.

In The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, v. 53, January 1922, no. 1, pp. 12-17. p. 12: These Smiths of Hempstead, Long Island, were English colonists who settled at that place early in its history; and, like others of the early settlers of that place, were probably of Puritan stock. When or by what route they came, we have been unable to ascertain.
Hempstead was settled in 1644 by a group of Englishmen and their families who went across Long Island Sound from New England and located on land which they bought from the Indians the previous year. See Thompson's History of Long Island for an interesting and condensed history of Hempstead.
p. 13: Definite records of this particular Smith family begin with Abel Smith of Cow Neck, born probably between 1675 and 1680; but there is conclusive evidence that the family was established in Hempstead at least a generation earlier, as will appear. (Cow Neck was a part of Hempstead and is now Manhasset Neck).
The father of Abel Smith was probably John Smith, for in the Hempstead census of 1698 we find the following group: "Mr. John Smith, Mrs. Sarah Smith, Josiah Smith, Abell Smith, Daniell Smith, Sarah Smith." (no ages given). As this was a house-to-house census, and as this group is enumerated in the order given, we conclude that it was one family, -- Mr. John Smith being the father and Abel Smith one of the sons. Identification of the family is not difficult as there is but one Abell Smith in the census.
What John Smith this was we can only infer, as there is no distinguishing suffix to his name and there were other John Smiths then living in Hempstead. He is the only John Smith to whom is given the prefix of Mr. in the census, which shows that he was a person of some importance and distinction. Now as to his identity. There is indication in the Records that Abel Smith was descended from John Smith "Blue" (or "Blew"): notably in a deed of March 3d, 1706 (Queens County Deeds, B.2, 253) where certain land on Cow Neck is spoken of as "mostly laid out to John Smith 'Blue' now in possession of Abel Smith." ("Blue" was a suffix used to identify the particular John Smith referred to). And, in the awarding of the land in the Division of 1742, there is indication that Abel Smith was in some way connected with John Smith "Blue" (though this evidence is not conclusive). Identity of locality also would indicate that Abel Smith and John Smith "Blue" might have belonged to the same family; both being associated with Cow Neck. So that Mr. John Smith of the census of 1698 may have been either the John Smith "Blue" of the Hempstead Town Records, or he may have been John Smith, Jr. "Blew" mentioned in the eighth volume of Hempstead Town Records. That Abel Smith was descended from John Smith "Blue" was also the opinion of Mr. Geo. W. Cocks, a noted Long Island genealogist who wrote the author: "So far in my searches and from such deductions as one may make from the Hempstead Records, everything seems to point to John Smith (Blue) as being the father or grandfather of Abel, but I am not able to show the connection except by inference." This John Smith "Blue" or "Blew" was settled in his own house in Hempstead in 1659 and how much earlier we do not know. See Onderdonk's Annals of Hempstead, p. 40). He was elected Constable in Hempstead in 1676; he helped divide the land and determine the boundaries; he was chosen with others to go to New York in October 1684 to endeavor to purchase a Patent for the Town (this was the beginning of negotiations for the purchase of the Dongan Patent, 1685); and he went on several other occasions with others to see the Governor at New York about the Town's lands (See Hempstead Town Records, vols. I and II., and English Manuscript[s, XXVI, 70, 73). ...

There were several Smith lines on Long Island at this time. They were the "Blue" Smith, "Rock" Smith, "Tangier" Smith, and "Bull" Smith families. Much has been written to sort out these lines.
John Smith was probably the father of Abel, as Abel is listed in the 1698 census of Hempstead as being in his household. The prefix Mr and Mrs are given to John and Sarah. Since a Sarah also married Abel, but after 1698, John's wife was Sarah. He is noted as John "Blue" Smith in land dealings of 1706. He is noted as settled in Hempstead in 1659. There is a possibility that John Jr was the father of Abel. John was a Constable of Hempstead in 1676, a very important post. He helped in the negotiations to purchase a patent for the Town, later the Dongan Patent of 1685.

The Strickland Family
First Generation
1. John Strickland1–2 was born circa 1595 in England.2 He died on 5 Sep 1672–13 Dec 1672 at the age of 77 in Hempstead, Long Island, New Netherland.2 John Strickland arrived in America about 1629, settling in Salem, Massachusetts Bay. He moved to Charlestown in 1630 and was made a freeman there on 18 May 1631. From Charlestown, he moved to Watertown by 1634 and was granted a homestall of 16 acres. John was one of six men dismissed by the Church of Watertown on 29 May 1635 with the intent to form a new church covenant in the "River of Conectecott." Wethersfield was the next stop for Strickland in 1635. He sold his homelot, house and barn on 28 March 1640 to William Frost of Fairfield, CT. John spent the early 1640s in Fairfield, CT. Strickland then moved to Long Island and was one of the founders of Hempstead in 1644. By 1659, he had moved to Huntington, Long Island, then to Jamaica by 1663.
John Strickland held numerous offices in Massachusetts, Connecticut and on Long Island, in addition to holding the rank of Sergeant in the Massachusetts militia in 1631.
18 September 1630: coroner's jury, Charletown.
3 May 1631: Juryman, Charlestown.
9 September 1641: Deputy to Connecticut General Court, Fairfield.
5 March 1658: Magistrate, Hempstead.
4 February 1660: Magistrate, Huntington.
The name of the wife of John Strickland is not known. There is some speculation that it may have been Jane. The name of Jane Fenwick has also appeared as a possible spouse, but has been suspect, at best. The Stricklands had at least four daughters. Although John's will does not give their given names, the girls are probably:
(1) Elizabeth, b. c1620; m. c1640 - Jonas Wood "Oram"
(2) Hannah, b. c1625; m. c1645 - John Lum
(3) Sarah, b. c1628; m. c1650 - John Smith "Blue"
(4) Susannah, b. c1630; m. c1651 - Timothy Baker; m. c1660 - Samuel Matthews
John Strickland made his will 5 September 1672. It was proved on 13 December 1672. His daughters were mentioned under their married surnames only: Loum [Lum], Matthews and Smith. His daughter Elizabeth apparently predeceased him, as did his wife.
Jane? [Strickland]3 died before Sep 1672 in Prob. Jamaica, New York, British America.3
John Strickland and Jane? [Strickland] had the following child:
2 i. Susannah "Susan" Strickland, born ca 1630, Charlestown, Massachusetts Bay, British America; married Samuel Matthews Sr., ca 1660, Prob. Jamaica, Long Island, New Netherland.

The conflict was marked by exceptional cruelty on the part of many English settlers and their Indian allies and resulted in the annihilation of the Pequot tribe. Celebrating their victory, one pious colonist crowed: "Let the whole Earth be filled with his glory! Thus the lord was pleased to smite our Enemies in the hinder Parts and to give us their Land for an Inheritance."In 1643 Seaman purchased land from the Messapequa tribe to establish a settlement on what would become known as Long Island. He called his creation Jerusalem South but it was also known as "Seaman's Neck". In 1644 he married Elizabeth Strickland and the couple had four sons and a daughter before his wife's death in 1654. A year later Martha Moore became his second wife and she went on to bear no less than four more sons and seven daughters!Seaman became a pacifist Quaker in later life. He died in 1694 and in 1868 Jerusalem South was renamed "Seaford", to honor his English hometown. The last of his American descendants died relatively recently. Family he left back in England saw the Seaman name change over time to become variously Simons, Symmonds and finally Simmons. In 1858 one Mr. Henry Simmons, Bailiff of Seaford

JOHN LUM was born about 1620 in Yorkshire, England.
Matthew Wood, in the NYGBR article "English Origins of the Mitchell, Wood, Lum and Halstead Families", says JOHN LUM was born in 1615.
JOHN LUM first appears in Stamford, Connecticut in 1642, where he was granted a place for his home, land, and a field which could be enclosed.
JOHN LUM was one of the original proprietors at Hempstead, Long Island in 1644; and removing to Southampton by 1651, where in 1653 he was granted a hundred acre lot. JOHN LUM purchased land from the Indians at Huntington in 1657, and resided there through 1664. Adult children of JOHN LUM remained at Southampton.
Sometime before 1667, JOHN LUM moved to Fairfield, Connecticut, and remained there at least through 1673.
"English Origins of the Mitchell, Wood, Lum and Halstead Families" states, on Page 236, the following information:
The first name of JOHN LUM's wife is unknown, her surname was Strickland, and that she was the DAUGHTER of JOHN STRICKLAND.
"Seymour Past and Present" says JOHN LUM married Hannah STRICKLAND on 1643 in Fairfield, Connecticut.
"Seymour Past and Present" was written in 1902. "English Origins of the Mitchell, Wood, Lum and Halstead Families" was written in 1989, after additional records were discovered; thus "English Origins" may be considered the more accurate record.
Children:
--- Samuel Lum, (born about 1644, died about 1698), married Hannah Meiggs.
--- JOHN LUM was witness to the will of John Knowles in 1673. John Knowles died in 1686.
JOHN LUM also witnessed the will of Jonas Wood of Huntington in 1689, and, at Fairfield, Connecticut, died sometime after this time.
"Great Migration Begins", entry for JOHN STRICKLAND, says: "Daughter, b. say 1625; m. by about 1645 JOHN LUM." Anderson's source: NYGBR 120:235-36. No 1st name is given for the daughter.

He was granted a home lot and land in the field to be enclosed, and was there to the end of the year. (He then moved to L. I. etc.) ---In Southampton town records, Vol 2, pages 18,19,20, under date of Aug 20, 1660, it is stated that John Lum has moved to Huntington, that he has been of the "North Sea" Community (Ogden's) in Southampton bounds, that a son, Samuel stays in Southampton, and that a son Matthew return to Southampton to do blacksmithing. --- In Huntington records under date of May 1, 1667, it is stated that John Matthews sold to Thomas Wicks, Jr., the lot he purchased of John Lum, now of Fairfield, Ct., ---
John Lum was at Fairfield, Ct., Nov 1, 1673, when John Knowles writes his will and leaves a bequest (a shote) to "John Lum (spelt Loom) who hath been very helpful to me in my sickness." See Fairfield Records, Vol. 2, pg 71. John Lum is a witness to the will. John Knowles died in 1686 according to Fairfield records of deeds and appears to have lived near the center of what is now Fairfield, and it is presumed that John Lum was a near neighbor, though no record of lands in his name are found.--
In Halifax, Yorkshire parish register, Vol. 37, page 295, a Jonas Wood, son of Richard, is stated to have been baptized Aug 3, 1584, and on page 349 a John Lum, son of George, of Halifax, it is stated, was baptized Feb. 18, 1592. It is possible these may have been the fathers respectively of Jonas Wood and John Lum to came to this country and married sisters, the daughters of Sergeant John Strickland. Jonas Wood md. Joanna Strickland in 1644. John Lum md _____Strickland. Her first name has not been found. John Strickland was at Charlestown, Mass., 1630, Watertown, 1632, Wethersfield, Ct., 1635, Stamford, Ct 1640, Hempstead, L. I. 1644, and Jamaica, L. . 1672. In his will he leaves a bequest (cow) to his eldest daughter, the wife of John Lum.
It is supposed that John Lum md Miss ____Strickland at Stamford, Ct., about 1642. The children of John and ____(Strickland) Lum were probably as follows:
1. Samuel b. about 1644
2. Matthew b. about 1646, d. 1670
3. Sarah, b. about 1652, d. 1684
4. Elizabeth, b. about 1662 d. 1709 - Elizabeth was baptized at Middlebury, Conn., in May, 1684, and according to record was adult from Long Island. She married July 12, 1684, to Benjamin Hinman, third son of Sergeant Edward and Frances (Stiles) Hinman, who was born in Feb., 1662-3, at Stratford, Conn.

Deacon Richard Platt and Mary Wood of Hertfordshire immigrated after 31 May 1637 to New Haven, New Haven Co., Connecticut, USA;
Per Liptrap PLATT Family Page: "Richard and Mary left England 31 May 1637 and settled in Quinnipiac, Connecticut (renamed New Haven Apr 1638), and was one of the founders of Milford in 1639."
Per Platt [1891:14]: "...Richard Platt came to this country in 1638, and landed at New Haven. In the records of the colony of New Haven we read that Richard Platt had eighty-four acres of land in and around New Haven. In the Milford records we read that he was enrolled among its first settlers, Nov. 20, 1639, having four in his family. "He had probably brought with him from England his children, Mary, John, Isaac and Sarah; for his first child baptized in Milford, by the record, was Epenetus, July 12, 1640. Subsequently were baptized, Hannah, October 1, 1643; Josiah, 1645, and Joseph in 1649."6,7

; His 2nd of 3 wives; her 2nd of 2 husbands.3,2
Mary Platt died on 17 June 1669 at Middletown, Middlesex Co., Connecticut, USA, at age 39.1
Mary Platt was buried after 17 June 1669 at Riverside Cemetery, Middletown, Middlesex Co., Connecticut, USA;
From Find a Grave: Mary Platt Whitmore
Birth 11 Nov 1629, Roydon, Epping Forest District, Essex, England
Death 17 Jun 1669 (aged 39), Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut, USA
Burial Riverside Cemetery, Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut, USA
Daughter of Mary Wood and Deacon Richard Platt from Roydon, Essex, England.
Some records show a christening for the younger Mary Platt at Roydon, Essex, England. Parish Records would have to be checked.
She married (1) Luke Atkinson about 1650; they had 5 or 6 children before 1663.
She married (2) widower, Thomas Whitmore about 1666/67, his second wife.
This is probably her daughter; it seems Mary may have died in childbirth with the only child she had with husband, Thomas Whitmore: Mehitable
This is concluded because some records list Mehitable Whitmore (Wetmore) as a daughter of Thomas Whitmore and Mary Platt plus this Mehitable was born on the day Mary Platt died, both events at Middletown, and both buried at this cemetery.
