Isaac is the son of Rev. Richard Platt and Mary Wood. He immigrated New England in 1638
Note: On 6 April 1663, Isaac was chosen messenger to Hartford. Then, at the General Assembly at Hartford, 12 May 1664, Isaac and his brother Epenetus, residing on Long Island, were made free planters with liberty to act in the choice of public officers and carrying on public affairs in "that plantation." The Huntington Town Minutes, Vol. 1, p.1, show tha t on 13 December 1664, Isaac and Thomas Weekes were chosen to collect the rate for the Reverend Eliphalet Jones and "to take as fair what may be for his comfort as far as concernes the towne so long as Mr. Jones dos stay or the town se case (see cause)."
The following chronology is taken from an unpublished article entitled "Isaac Platt, Early Huntington Settler," by the Huntington Historical Society : 30 December 1666: Isaac named patentee in Gov. Nicoll' s confirmatory patent. 2 April 1667, Isaac & Henry Whitson each received a two acre grant at Santipauge Neck from the town. 19 May 1668, Isaac, Thomas Wicks, Capt. Fleet, & N athaniel Foster complained of the unsatisfactory practices of Mark Meggs, town miller. 3 July 1670, Isaac & Thoma s Powell were named executors under the will of Thomas Wick s. 12 April 1671, Isaac & Thomas Powell were named oversee rs. At that meeting "all foreigners (other than townsmen) were prohibited from killing whales or other small fishes." 16-17 April 1672, Isaac shared the 7th farm in the 10 farm allotment at Crabmeadow Little Neck with Thomas Wicks , Richard Brush, John Green and Mr. Bryan. 14 August 1673 , Isaac and Thomas Skidmore were selected by the town to treat with the Dutch upon the occasion of the latter's resumption of power. On 6 October 1673, Isaac, his brother, Epenetus, and three others were formed a committee to call upon the Dutch authorities in New York and to petition them not to exact a pledge of allegiance from the town but to put it on good behavior for a period of one year. 11 January 1674, Isaac, then constable, was cited by the Governor for neglecting to attend the Court of Sessions at Jamaica and for not furnishing Captain Salisbury with post horses when he was riding express. Punishment not knownn. In 1681 , Isaac, James Smith, Thomas Skidmore, and John Jackson went to Stratford, Conn. to testify about Jacob Walker's handling of the affairs of Huntington's former miller, Mark Meggs. That year Isaac, Epenetus, Samuel Titus, Josas Wood and Thomas Wicks were imprisoned in New York for seeking redress for the town's grievances. On their release and return to Huntington, the town voted to pay their expenses and any damages that they might have suffered in the town's interest. 23 May 1681 Isaac received a 5 acre grant from the town on the south side of the east field, adjoining his other holdings. 24 September 1681 Isaac was one of the deputies named to act for the town in the general assembly to review the discontent and hostility which was emerging from the tyranical conduct of Governor Sir Edmund Andros. 31 October 1681 Isaac received 16-18 acres toward his division at Jonathan Hartnet's Hollow on the north side of the path to Stony Brook. 1 April 1682 Isaac was again constable and with the overseers established the terms and conditions under which John Adams was granted a right to build a grist mill and saw mill at Cold Spring. 7 April 1684 Isaac and Epenetus Platt and John Corey were named commissioners of the town court. Six months later they delegated Thomas Powell and Abiel Titus to run a boundary line with Oyster Bay. 10 March 1686 Isaac and others entered into a disputed boundery line agreement with James Lloyd concerning differences between Huntington and Lloyd's Neck. 16 October 1686 Isaac and Thomas Powell were designated to reply to Governor Thomas Dongan's "desire to know just what lands Huntington had already purchased from the Indians and what remained still unpurchased." On 10 November, Isaac and Powell were sent to New York to answer the Governor's letter, being authorized to do what was for the town good. 15 March 1686/7 Isaac gave a detailed bill to the town for his various services, including an 11 day journey to New York for himself and horse; trips to Oyster Bay to see that town's patent; incidental expenses for cider, meals and meat; another 5 day trip to New York; and compiling the town's rates and assessments and the time and difficulties of collecting the taxes. His bill amounted to f5 5s 6d. 4 April 1687 Isaac, James Chichester Sr. and Samuel Ketcham were named commissioners. Isaac was apparently also Town Clerk. On 18 April he prepared a letter to Mr. Graham, probably a functionary of the Governor, outlining the town's desires of the elements to be incorporated in the forthcoming confirmatory patent. 20 September 1687 Isaac, Capt. Thomas Fleet and Thomas Powell were chosen "to carry on all matters relating to the finishing of their Pattent." That same day Isaac was chosen with Mr. Wood and Thomas Powell to serve as assessors for the 3 1/2 pence per pound of valuation ordered byt he Governor and Council. 2 April 1688 Isaac was again named commissioner with Joseph Whitman and John Sammis. 11 December 1688 Isaac bought 15 acres at East Neck from Joseph Whitman and his wife, Sarah. 5 November 1689 Isaac was named in the Indian deed to Sumpwam's Neck South with Jonas Wood, Captain Epenetus Platt, Captain Thomas Fleet, and others. The Indians Wameeas, Pamequa and others were paid f90 in silver or goods valued at silver prices. 1 April 1690 Isaac was permitted to take the old foot path abutting his property on the north and 9 acres on the south side of the old path which led to Stony Brook.
Isaac's will was dated 22 May 1691, at Huntington. He left: To son, Jonas, the house between Samuel Woods & Jonathan Jarvis, and a f100 right of commonage purchased from the town and two parcels of meadowland on the southside. Also, a yoke of 3 year old steers and "if he abide with his mother & brethen until ye 29th Sept next and faithfully improve his time about their occasions then I do also give him ten bushels of wheat, twelve bushels of corn, a quarter of an ox called Darling that is now feeding, half an ox hide tanned and as much upper leather as will make two pair of shoes." To his wife he left a 1/3 part of all other lands & meadows as long as she remained a widow. If she remarried this interest would revert to the three youngest sons, John, Joseph and Jacob. Isaac 's wife also received 1/3 of all goods and chattels plus her own room in the homestead. To daughter, Elizabeth, f5 . The balance of lands and meadows he devised to his sons John, Jacob and Joseph to divide equally. The balance of goods and chattels went to his four sons and daughter, Mary, to be divided equally. If Jonas, the oldest son, should die without issue his share was to go to the surviving younger sons. If any of them died unmarried, distribution would be among the surviving brothers and sisters. The buildings were to remain solely with John, Joseph and Jacob, and Jonas and Mary were excluded from the homestead title (perhaps they had their own homes by that time). The executor was Isaac's son, John. References: Platt Genealogy; Jeanne Bender; Isaac Platt, Early Huntington Settler - unpublished manuscript by the Huntington Historical Society.

Note:
Jacobus, in Families of Old Fairfield, clarified published data about Isaac's marriage. He stated, "Isaac married (1) Elizabeth Wood, daughter of Jonas 'of Oram.'" Isaac did not, as so often stated, marry (1) at Milford, 12 March 1640, Phebe Smith. No marriages were entered in either town or church records there that early, and the statement is obviously due to carelessness in confusing him with another Isaac Platt of Milford who did marry Phebe Smith, but on 12 March 1740, just a century later. [That later Isaac Platt was the son of Josiah Platt and Sarah Burwell.] The "12 March 1640" marriage, however, was published in Clemens, American Marriage Records Before 1699, and has been picked up by other published works, such as Beers' Commemorative Biographical Record of New Haven County Connecticut.
Isaac was one of the ten grantees of the tract called "Paugasuck" on Long Island, which the grantees placed under New Haven's jurisdiction in 1655. He moved to Huntington before 6 April 1663 (see the printed Records of Huntington, 1:45), and as a resident of Huntington was made a freeman of Connecticut 12 May 1664. The record reads: "...Thomas Scuddor ... Isaac Platt are accepted to be made free, and the Commissioners of Huntington are to administer the oath of freedom to them... Hartford: 12 May 1664."
The town of Huntington stood on land purchased from the Indians in 1646 by Gov. Theophilus Eaton of New Haven Colony. The tract was originally called Eaton's Neck, and for a long time Connecticut claimed jurisdiction over Long Island. Connecticut did not relinquish the territory until 1664, in accordance with the decision of the commissioners appointed to investigate the Duke of York's patent. The inhabitants of Huntington were obliged then to take out patents from Gov. Nicholl. Isaac was among the 57 land owners of Huntington, L.I. in 1666. On 30 November 1666 Gov. Nicholl required the inhabitants of Huntington to take out a patent of confirmation; the names of Isaac and Epenetus Platt appear as patentees. On 2 September 1679 in Huntington, Suffolk County, Long Island, NY, Isaac Platt received a deed of land from John Green. On 15 May 1683 he received a deed of land from Jonathan Hamet.
Isaac was Recorder for Huntington in 1687 and captain of the militia there. Isaac was a slave owner.
In 1681 Gov. Andrus imprisoned Isaac and Epenetus Platt and others for attending a meeting of delegates of the several towns to devise means to obtain "a redress of grievances under his arbitrary rule." After their release, a vote was passed at a town meeting to cover their expenses. On 4 August 1683 he was mentioned as son in the will of Richard Platt of Milford, receiving L20 and three Bibles for his children. In 1688 when a new patent for Huntington was taken out, again both Isaac and Epenetus Platt were among the patentees.
The will of Isaac Platt of Huntington was dated 22 May 1691. It mentions wife Elizabeth and children Elizabeth, Jonas, John, Mary, Joseph and Jacob.10 GAV-7. He was a mentioned with Deacon Richard Platt; See attached images of pp. 483-489 from Vol. 1 of Jacobus [1991].8

Elizabeth Wood died in 1691 at Huntington, Suffolk Co., New York, USA.1
; Text of PLATT Family Page on Liptrap: My Genealogy is attached.6 GAV-7.
In Capt. Isaac Platt's will dated 22 May 1691 at Huntington, Suffolk Co., New York, USA, Elizabeth Wood was named as an heir;
from Find a Grave:      Isaac's will was dated 22 May 1691, at Huntington.

To his wife he left a 1/3 part of all other lands & meadows as long as she remained a widow. The executor was Isaac's son, John.

from Find a Grave: Thomas Powell
Birth     Aug 1641, North Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut, USA
Death     28 Dec 1721 (aged 80), Westbury, Nassau County, New York, USA
Burial     Burial Details Unknown. Specifically: There is no official burial place on record. It is probable that he is buried in the Quaker Cemetery adjacent to the Quaker Meeting House he founded however most of the headstones are washed out.
Thomas Powell was a son of a rum dealer who made frequent trips between Barbados, West Indies and New York. Young Thomas would travel with his father on his trips. On one of these ventures, his father stopped in Huntington Harbor, NY to visit a friend, JOnas Halifax Wood, who was a master shoemaker. He decided to leave Thomas there to become an apprentice (indentured servant) with him. Thomas was 12 years old and stayed with the Woods family for 9 years.
Thomas grew up and became a successful businessman who bought land and became a respected member in his community. Thomas served as the town recorder for almost twenty years from 1663 - 1683. He also served as a constable/justice of the peace from 1667-1678. He married Abgail Woods in 1664 and they had 8 children. She died in 1681 and Thomas married Elizabeth Townsend in 1690 and they had 7 more children.
Thomas Powell, originally owned land in Huntington, NY. He was also the constable there. But around the 1685 he became a devout Quaker, who did not believe in paying taxes to England. He therefore could not continue to swear allegiance to England, and so resigned his positions in the community.
In 1687 he bought about 15 square miles (about 10,000 acres) of land from the Massapequa, Secatog and Matinecock people. He paid 140 sterling pounds.
Powell called his land Bethpage (which means "house of figs") because it was in between Jericho and Jerusalem, just like in Israel. Jerusalem is now called Wantagh and Island Trees. Because most pioneers were not very good spellers, Bethphage was spelled Bethpage, leaving out the second "H" and established the spelling we use today.
Powell originally built himself a house on a street now known as Hempstead Turnpike. After his fifteen children grew up, Thomas built himself a new house on Merritt Road and gave his original house to his son and his new wife. Unfortunately, that house was destroyed in 1931.
Thomas Powell, Sr. explored more and more of his land. In time he found the area called "Rim of the Woods" . This land is where most of modern day Bethpage is today. Powell divided up this land between his kids.
He also gave one third of all his Bethpage lands to an apprentice he once had, named Whitson. This started the break-up of the family ownership of Bethpage, especially after Powell died on December 28, 1721.

Edmund was born about 1571 based on date of baptism record ( Ogden, Louis G; Owen, Brent M; "Revisiting the Stamford Pioneers of Halifax Parish, Yorkshire, West Riding, England" The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Volume 151 (2020) October).
Son of Edmund Wood of Shelf in Halifax, Yorkshire.
He married at Halifax, Yorkshire, 21 May 1611, Martha Lum, daughter of William Lum. They had 5 known children:
     -Martha
     -Jonas
     -Susannah
     -Jeremiah
     -Timothy
Came from Halifax, Yorkshire, to Massachusetts Bay during the Great Migration likely in 1635 likely on the ship 'The James' along with his family. Stayed in Springfield MA 1636, at Wethersfield, CT in 1637, Stamford CT in 1641, Hempstead, Long Island NY in 1644, & finally Huntington Long Island, NY.
Edmund Wood and his sons had land holdings in several locations on Long Island; Hempstead, Huntington, Southampton, Smithtown, Jamacia . Many of these areas bordered each other so finding historical mention of these Wood men living in one area or the other over the course of their lives was not like we move and relocated in modern times.
He died sometime between 1650 & 1660. It is not known where he was interred.
YDNA testing of male descendants of Edmund Wood Jr. has identified that Edmund Wood Jr. and his son's carry the FT461209 SNP. Two additional SNP markers have also been found for generations prior to Edmund Wood Jr., one Wood line in England and one Woods line that migrated to Ireland and then to Canada.
Specific YDNA markers have also been found that can identify male descendants of Edmund's son's Jeremiah and Jonas Wood.
Any male Wood's interested in YDNA testing to confirm or discover their lineage back to Edmund or beyond may contact the manager of this memorial site for more information.

EDMUND WOOD II, bapt. 2 Mar 1572 in Bingley (Yorkshire), England, d.c.1663 in Huntington, (Suffolk Co.), Long Island. He 1st m. bef. 9 Feb 1601 in Halifax, England _________. He 2nd m. 21 May 1611 "Martha Lüme (umlaut over the vowel in her surname) - i.e. "Lum" - at St John Baptist, Halifax, Yorkshire (b. 7 Jan 1581 in Halifax, England d. bef. 1663 in Huntington, L.I.)
Per Richard Draper 17 May 2025:
"Edmund Wood II was a son of Edmund Wood I of Shelff, Halifax, Yorkshire, England. His mother's name is not known. Edmund II's occupation was 'Yeoman', which means land holder and he had enough education to be able to sign his deeds. Their residence prior to emigration is recorded as Shelf when their children were baptized.
Edmund Wood and his family emigrated to New England in 1634/35, probably aboard the James of Bristol. He settled initially at Watertown, MA. In 1636 he owned lands in Springfield, MA, where on May 14, 1636 he, along with brother-in-law Matthew Mitchell, signed an agreement with William Pynchon and 5 others, defining the laws and layout of the land in the new settlement of Agawam, or 'Springfield' as it was later known. This charter gave lots side by side for Matthew Mitchell, Samuel Butterfield, Edmund Wood, and Jonas Wood - all of the same family.
The next records show Edmund Wood, along with his son Jonas at Wethersfield, CT. On October 4, 1640, Andrew Ward and Robert Coe petitioned the court to pay the Indians to purchase land. During the following spring and summer they settled the site that became known as Stamford, CT. Edmund, his sons Jonas and Jeremiah, and his sons-in-law Thurston Raynor and Samuel Clark are mentioned on the lists of settlers and landholders.
The settlement of Stamford was successful, but the eyes of some of the settlers observed the 'veritable paradise' across the sound of Long Island. The area had a balmy climate, deep rich soil, grasslands, fish and fowl. By 1644 the Wood family, including Edmund, his sons Jonas, Jeremiah, and Timothy, sons-in-law Thurston Raynor and Samuel Clark went with Rev. Fordham to organized a town to be governed by the Dutch, called Hempstead on Long Island. They were among the 'Fifty Original Proprietors' of the town. By this time, all of Edmund's children were adults and his youngest son, Timothy appears on the records for the first time.
In 1650 Edmund and his sons bought land in what would come to be known as Smithtown, NY from Nasseconsak, Sachem of Nassequake. They did not develop this land, however.
Edmund and his sons did not remain in Hempstead very long. Being Puritans, makes this understandable since it was 'soon overrun by religious dissidents and malcontents.'
By 1650 his sons and sons-in-law had moved to Southampton, L.I. and between 1650 - 1660, Edmund had sold his holdings in Hempstead and moved to join his family there. In 1655 he removed to Huntington, Long Island.
On July 7, 1663 Jonas Wood of Huntington, L.I. sold to John Core the house and land 'formerly owned by Edmund Wood II', and it is assumed by this that Edmund II had died at Huntington by this time. He died in Huntington, NY after 8 years of being settled there, and was likely buried in the Old Burying Hill Cemetery located there. There is no mention of Edmund II's wife, Martha Lum so it is assumed that she was already deceased at this time."

"THE WOOD FAMILY OF BINGLEY PARISH

Wood was a common surname in Bingley Parish, and Edmond Wood was a recurring name there during the period being examined. Bingley parish registers (existing from 20 December 1577) include the baptisms of several children named Edmund Wood of an appropriate age to have been Edmond1, Stamford pioneer, although none had a father named Edmond. However, in adjacent Keighley Parish, there is one very interesting record for an Edmond Wood.
Keighley parish registers (existing from 1562) occasionally contained a record for people living in nearby Bingley Parish. There are only six Wood records at Keigh ley prior to 1600:
1.     Jane Woode, baptized 10 October 1563, daughter of Thomas of Bingley229
2.     John Woode and Jane Hall of Bingley, married 16 February1571(/2]230
3.     Edmond Woode, baptized 2 March 1571[1/2], son of Edmond of Bingley231
4.     Richard Woode, baptized 12 October 1578, son of Richard232
5.     James Woode, baptized 7 July 1578, son of Richard233
6.     George Woodde and Marie Bartley, married 25 September 1599234
Since no location is given in the last three records, it must be assumed that those Wood families were resident in Keighley. Their relationship to the Wood family of Bingley is not certain; however, all of these records are relevant to the discussion of the various possibly related Wood families. The first three records clearly indicate members of a Wood family or families of Bingley Parish.
The 2 March 1571[/ 2] baptism of Edmond Wood, son of Edmond of Bingley, fits the father and son named Edmond Wood identified in Thomas Butterfield's will. In his RECORD article, Matthew Wood estimated that the older Edmond was born about 1550, and his son Edmond born about 1585- 1590. Based on this 1571[/ 2] baptismal date, the elder Edmond was likely born say 1551 or earlier, consistent with Matthew Woo d's prediction. But the son Edmond is older than previously thought, perhaps because Matthew Wood 's proposed birth order was arbitrary and the age of Edmond1 estimated from his likely age at his marriage to Martha Lome.235 This baptismal record presents the possibility that Edmond1 may have been an older, rather than the youngest,
229 Jane Woode, daughter of Thomas of Bingley, baptized 10 Oct 1 5 63, Keighley parish registers (note 176).
230 John Woode-Jane Hall of Bingley marriage 16 Feb. 1571[/2], Keighley parish registers (note 176).
231 Edmond Wood e, son of Edmond of Bingley, baptized 2 Mar. 1571[/,2] Keighley parish registers (note 176).

2. EDMOND WOOD (EdmondA) was born in Bingley and baptized at Keighley 2 March 1571(/ 2]321 He died before 7 July 1663, when in a deed his son described property that formerly belonged to Edmond.322 Edmond probably married first before 9 February 1600[/ 1] (burial of a child),323 but his wife's name was not discovered. She died probably between 3 April 1608 (last known child)324 and 21 May 1611, when Edmond married, probably second, at Halifax MARTHA LUM,325 baptized at Elland 20 September 1585,326 died after 14 July 1622 (last-known child)327 daughter of William and Agnes (Bairstow) Lum.325."1 GAV9.

Per Ackerman (who quotes from the Platt Newsletter):
"Timothy came to America with his parents and two brothers in 1630 when he was 10 years old [sic. 8]. They were Puritans who had fled the religious persecutions going on in northern England. They came by ship to Boston, Massachusetts and settled in the nearby village of Watertown, in 1635. The following year, they moved inland and helped start the town of Springfield. A few months later, they were among the first to settle in Wethersfield, Connecticut and remained there for four years. In 1640, they moved down the Connecticut River to Stamford, where they remained for another four years. In 1644, they crossed the Sound and built again in the new settlement. The Wood family, including Edmund, his sons Jonas, Jeremiah, and Timothy, sons-in-law Thurston Raynor and Samuel Clark went with Rev. Fordham to organized a town to be governed by the Dutch, called Hempstead on Long Island. They were among the "Fifty Original Proprietors" of the town. By this time, all of Edmund's children were adults and his youngest son, Timothy appears on the records for the first time.
By then, Timothy was married and made his living by farming, as most everyone else did. Timothy, along with his father, Edmond Wood, brothers Jonas Wood and Jeremy Wood, were on a 1650 deed for purchase of 'a certain quantity of land, beginning at a river called and commonly known by the name of Nesaquake River, and from that river eastward to a river called Menanusack, lying on the north side of Long Island, and on the south side from Connecticottfour necks westward.' They had bought a large tract of land from the Indians at a place called Fresh Pond, now called Smithtown, NY, and there home lot was where the Huntington-Smithtown boundary now runs. He spent most of the next three years clearing the woods there.
In 1653 the Huntington purchase was made, and Timothy Wood was one of the first to build here, clearing his home lot near the Common, planting his orchard and erecting fences as he had done so many times before. He died here six years later in 1659, when he was only 35 years old.' [References: NYGBR Vol. 120, No. 1, p. 9; Platt Newsletter, Vol. 20, p. 31 (quoting a book from the Emma S. Clark Library regarding the History of Huntington)]".

It is to be understood that thos two Cows mentioned to John Loums daughter & to Jonathan Mills ware my wives and shee gave them as shee saw good and I promising her to performe her will have acordingly disposed of them. Attested by John ffoster, Benjamin Coe"
The substance of the original will is that Mr. John "Sticklin," then a resident of Jamaica, New York, on September 5, 1672, caused his will to be made; and the disposal of his estate was either directly made to the following or to their heirs:
i. A daughter, who married John Loum
ii. A daughter, who married Samuel Matthews
iii. Jonathan Mills
iv. A daughter, who married John Smith.

Another heir of the estate was Henry Howard, according to a short account at the end of the official copy. The foregoing are the sole heirs mentioned in the will.

... In the History of Charlestown, Mass. (1845), by Richard Frothingham, Jr., it is stated on page 20 that the inhabitants who first settled that place in 1628-9 and who were brought into the denomination of an English town, included among others John Stickline.
Simon Hoyte and John Stickline were admitted freemen in 1631 (ibid, p. 23). According to the NEHGR, III, p. 90, "Seargent Strickland" took oath to become a freeman at a General Court held in Boston, May 18, 1631. It seems to be assumed that Sergeant Strickland and John Stickline were one and the same person. In Bond's Early History of Watertown, vol. II, page 113, in an article on the descendants of John and Elinor Whitney of Watertown, Mass., it is stated that Whitney purchased a sixteen acre homestall, which had been granted to John Strickland, who was dismissed from the Watertown church, May 29, 1635; it goes on further to say that Strickland was one of that colony from Watertown that removed to colonize Wethersfield.
From this it may be inferred that John Strickland left Watertown in 1635 to aid in the founding of the new settlement on the Connecticut River; the dismission of "Jo: Strickland" with others from Watertown is referred to in the first recorded meeting of magistrates of the new colony on April 26, 1636, with the statement that Stickland and the others had carried out their commission "to forme a newe in a Ch: Convennte. in the River of Conectecott" .
He was next mentioned at a Court held Nov. 1, 1636: It is ordered yt. Srieant Stickland is to haue for 7 days seruice to the Rivers mouth, aboute Cattle of Mr. Michell & the lo: or their Agents, 21 s. The rest yt went in the same seruice 14 s. a peece ...
This was in the troublesome days preceding the declaration of war against the Pequots, which occurred May 1, 1637, and it appears from the above record that Sergeant Stickland led a small military company to aid Mr. Matthew Mitchell and others who had been annoyed by the depredations of the Indians at Saybrook.
He had a homelot in Wethersfield, Conn., which had on it a house and barn when he sold it on March 28, 1640 . This was probably the approximate date of his removal to Fairfield, where the first settlement had been made in 1639.
"John Sticklin" was one of the fourteen Deputies who attended a General Court of the colony on Sept. 9, 1641 . The places served by each deputy were not specified in the early records, but four of these deputies can be identified with Hartford, four with Windsor, and four with Wethersfield. The last two named in the record were Jehu Burr (misprinted as John Burr) and John Sticklin. Burr was an early settler in Fairfield, and we may conclude that these two men represented that town, although we do not find Fairfield represented again until April 1643, when Henry Gray was the sold deputy .
A reason for the sending of deputies to the September 1641 session of the General Court lied in the dispute between Stratford and Fairfield regarding their mutual bounds, and it is significant that the deputies at this very session appointed a committee "to settle the bounds betwixt Paquanucke and Vncoway ."
The will of William Frost of Fairfield, made Jan. 6, 1644/5, refers to land which he bought for his son Abraham from "John Sticklin" .
We have seemingly traced John Sticklin or Strickland from Watertown in 1635 to Wethersfield, thence by 1640 to Fairfield, whence he removed before 1645. His identity is proved by the fact that in 1659, being then of Huntington, L.I., he testified that he formerly lived at Uncoway now called Fairfield and was deputed with others to treat with Stratford men about town bounds .
The record of John Strickland or Sticline begins on Long Island apparently in 1644 when he was a Patentee of Hempstead, New York, with others. He appears in Hempstead for about fourteen years until 1659. In the first volume of the printed town records of that place the name appears predominantly as Stickline or Strickline. On December 27, 1658, he is still recorded as Mr. Strickline. If anything, this spelling seems more frequent by far than the other variants and has led the present writer to conclude that possibly the name was Stickline or Stickland, rather than Strickland. [Because all printed compilations refer to him as John Strickland, in order to collate the present article with such he has been so called. There are Sticklines and Sticklands in England; the latter appearing frequently in Dorset and Surrey. The assumption that he was descended from the well-known Strickland of Westmoreland in England does not find any support in all material examined by the present writer]. He held forty-one acres of land there in 1657 and is listed in the same year as having six cows and "one man." Only Mr. Hicks exceeded this rating upon the Hempstead lists. He is mentioned in a record in Southampton, N.Y., in 1650 as "Mr. Sticklin" in calling Johnas Wood his son-in-law ...
He signed, as a witness, the articles of agreement between the Governor of the New Netherlands and Tackapousha, March 12, 1656; and was magistrate for Hempstead with Mr. Richard Gildersleeve, March 5, 1658. The holding of this office is probably responsible for the title of "Mr." as he appears frequently in Hempstead records without it; and while he was a man of wealth and resource greater than that possessed by many of his contemporaries, his apparent illiteracy denies for him a higher education. That he was able to obtain a magistracy indicates no doubt a man of innate sagacity and of high qualities of leadership.
... In 1657 John Stickline or Stiklings appears in Huntington, New York, and he was a resident there by 1660, removing possibly in 1659 or shortly before; on march 2, 1663 the Huntington records call him of Jamaica ... On March 2, 1663, John Stiklan, widower, and of Jamaica, sells to Gabriel Finch " ... all my acomedations in huntington, onely my halfe neck of meddow, excepted: I say have sould to him, his eyers, exseketers, adminestrators and assigns, all my right and titell of house, house lott, barn yards, garden, frute trees, with all previliges and apurtenances thereto belonging, lying and being betwixt Thomas Seidmore and the lott yt was formerly Joseph Smiths: ..." (Printed town records, I, p. 54).
From the tenor of this deed it seems apparent that John Stickline was living in Huntington until as late as December 2, 1661, and probably until shortly before March 2, 1663. On March 8, 1666, John Stickland made over to Jonas Wood of Huntington a deed of sale for Copiague neck; the former was then of Jamaica.
... He resided in Jamaica the rest of his life, dying there between September 5 and December 13, 1672.

     p. 208: In conclusion, the issue of John Strickland by his wife, name unknown, were:
i. A daughter, who married John Lum.
ii. A daughter, who married Samuel Matthews.
iii. A daughter, who married John Smith.
And very probably:
iv. Elizabeth, wife of Jonas Wood ...
And possibly:
v. A daughter, who may have married Jonathan Mills, however, the latter may have been the son of the wife of John Strickland by a previous marriage.
vi. Thwaite. According to the NEHGR, XXXIX, p. 192 ... it is stated that Elizabeth, daughter of Edward Shepard of Cambridge, Mass., probably married first, Thwaite Strickland, and second, Nicholas Disboro.

"Strickland notes," compiled by Donald Lines Jacobus. In The American Genealogist, v. 20, pp. 207-10: p. 208: John Strickland, or Stickline as he was often called, was among the early settlers of Charlestown, Mass., and was Sergeant as early as 1631 when he was admitted freeman of Massachusetts Bay. He may by then have been resident in Watertown, Mass., from the church of which town he was dismissed 29 May 1635 to join the settlement at Wethersfield, Conn. The following year, he was active as Sergeant, leading a small contingent to Saybrook because of Indian depredations there, and presumably saw service a few months later when war was declared on the Pequots (May 1637). He sold his Wethersfield homelot 28 Mar. 1640, and seems to have removed that year to Fairfield, Conn., for as Deputy to the General Court in Sept. 1641 there is reason to believe he was representing Fairfield rather than Springfield as sometimes claimed. This session of the Court appointed a committee to settle the bounds between Fairfield and Stratford, and in 1659 Strickland testified regarding the bounds, which he had been active in settling.
He remained not over four years in Fairfield, and sold his homestead there to William Frost before 6 Jan. 1644/5, when Frost referred to the purchase in his will. In 1644 he was one of the Patentees of Hempstead, L.I., was active there for a few years, being Magistrate there in 1658. He drew land at Southampton in 1650, but his son-in-law, Jonas Wood, was his agent in this transaction, and no evidence has been seen that he ever lived there. He removed from Hempstead to Huntington probably early in 1659, calling himself of Huntington in the Fairfield testimony of that year. In 1661 he was named first among petitioners who sought a house in Elizabeth, N.J., but he never resided there. In Huntington he served as Magistrate in 1661, but in 1663, when he sold his Huntington homestead called himself widower, of Jamaica. He remained in Jamaica until his death between 5 Sept. and 13 Dec. 1672.
... The son most persistently attributed to John is Thwaite Strickland. Hatfield's "History of Elizabeth, N.J.," pp. 59-60, in the account of John Strickland, categorically states that John "removed to Wethersfield, Conn. His son, Thwait, settled there; but the father ... removed ..." We shall have occasion, when considering the history of Thwaite, to dispute, not only that he was son of John, but that he ever lived in Wethersfield. ...

[footnote: If he represented Fairfield, as we incline to believe, he was the first Deputy for Fairfield on record, the next being Henry Gray in 1643.]
He was an original settler of Charlestown, Mass., 1630; rem. to Watertown, and in 1636 to Wethersfield. That same year, as Sergt. led a ban to Saybrook to relieve Mr. Mitchell from depredations of the Indians. Probably he took active part in the Pequot War, 1637.
With Edmund, supposedly his brother, he was among the early settlers of Fairfield; for he testified in 1659, being then of Huntington, L.I., and stated that he formerly lived at Uncoway now called Fairfield and was deputed with others to treat with Stratford men about town bounds. In 1644 he was a Patentee of Hempstead, L.I., where he still lived in 1653. His son-in-law Jonas Wood drew a lot for him at Southampton in 1650. He lived a few years at Huntington, then rem. (by 1664) to Jamaica, L.I., where he d. in 1672.

ESTATE: "John Stickling" was granted a homestall of sixteen acres in Watertown, probably by 1634; by 1636 this had been acquired by John Whitney .
On 28 March 1640 John Strickland sold his homelot, house and barn at Wethersfield . In his will of 6 January 1644 William Frost of Fairfield referred to "the housing and land I bought of John Sticklin .
(John Strickland's Long Island landholding is summarized by Herbert F. Smith .)
In his will, dated 5 September 1672 and proved 13 December 1672, "Mr. Jno Sticklin ... being in great pain" bequeathed to "my daughter Loum [pounds]10"; to "my daughter Matthews youngest child forty shillings"; to "Jonathan Mills one cow"; to "John Loum's eldest daughter one cow"; residue to "all my grandchildren to be divided equally among them, that is to say those children that have been born of my daughters and are now living"; "my son John Smith, my son Samuel Matthews, John Foster & Beniemin Coe" to be executors; "it is to be understood that those two cows mentioned to John Loum's daughter & to Jonathan Mills were my wife's and she gave them as she saw good, and I promising her to perform her will have accordingly disposed of them" . (As with so many of the early New York wills, the published transcripts are seriously flawed; Herbert Smith was fortunate in this instance to find the original of the will, which he published in parallel with the "official" copy.)

DEATH: Jamaica between 5 September 1672 (date of will) and 13 December 1672 (probate of will). ...
ASSOCIATIONS: The possibility that John Strickland was related in some way to one or more of the other Strickland immigrants to New England has been discussed in detail in the articles by Smith and Jacobus (noted below).
COMMENTS: Admitted as an inhabitant of Charlestown in 1629 . On 4 September 1632 "John Stickland" was ordered fined [pounds]3 for refusing to take the watch; this fine was remitted in the general amnesty of 6 September 1638 .
The migrations of John Strickland are carefully traced and documented in the article by Herbert F. Smith . John Strickland deposed in 1659, "being then of Huntington, L.I.... that he formerly lived at Uncoway now called Fairfield and was deputed with others to treat with Stratford men about town bounds" .
BIBLIOGRAPHIC NOTE: In 1934 and 1935 Herbert F. Smith (known later as Herbert F. Seversmith) published the definitive study of John Strickland, detailing his many migrations and examining carefully the identification of his children . Smith concluded that the known children of John Strickland included only daughters, and that Thwaites Strickland was not a son. An important contribution of these articles was the comparison of the original will of John Strickland with the record copy and with the woefully inadequate published abstract.
Nearly a decade later Donald Lines Jacobus surveyed all the early Strickland immigrants to New England, and did not alter the conclusions of Smith, explicitly agreeing that Thwaites Strickland was not a son .
In 1989 and 1990 Matthew Wood published an extensive study of several immigrant families from Halifax, Yorkshire, including members of the Wood and Lum families who married daughters of John Strickland .

Per C.A. Baker Jr. in Baker Family Tree, Chp. 27: My Baker Ancestors Part II, 7 Sep 2010:
Susannah Strickland was the daughter of John Strickland of Hempstead, NY. She 1st married c.1651 to Timothy Wood of Hempstead, NY, and bore two children with him before he died in 1659. Around 1660, the widow Susannah Strickland Wood 2nd married to Samuel Matthews also of Hempstead, NY. Samuel Mathews died 35 years later in 1695 when his daughter Miss Susannah Matthews was around 14 years old. [Note DMI: Susannah Strickland must have been born about 1635 and married at about age 16 in 1651, in order to have been the mother at about 46 years old of Susannah Matthews, who was born in 1681].
After a brief mourning period for her late husband Samuel Matthews, Susannah Strickland 3rd married Ralph Hunt from nearby Newtown (i.e. Elmhurst, Queens Co.), NY. The young Susannah Mathews accompanied her mother Susannah Strickland, her new step-father Ralph Hunt, some of Ralph Hunt's brothers possibly her older brother Samuel Mathews Jr. , her sister Mary Mathews, and Mary's husband Joseph Smith to a new home in Maidenhead (i.e. Lawrenceville), West Jersey.
…Ralph Hunt was about 15 years younger than the 60 year old Susannah Strickland when they married. Furthermore there are no records to indicate that he had ever been married prior to marrying Susannah. There seems to be ample evidence that they married despite their age difference.
Joseph Smith married Mary Mathews (i.e. the daughter of Susannah Strickland) possibly in NY before they moved to Maidenhead, West Jersey. In a land sale recorded in Maidenhead, West Jersey dated 16 Oct 1700 there is a notation: "Ralph Hunt with wife Susanna." When Thomas Smith (i.e. the husband of Susannah Strickland's daughter Susannah Matthews), died in 1702 he appointed Ralph Hunt, "my father-in-law", as executor of his estate. Susannah Strickland died sometime between 1702 and 1712, when Ralph Hunt 2nd married an Elizabeth _________, who is also named as his wife in his will dated 1733.
