Greg. Have just your interesting post on Ancestry.com. My Nancy Ann Ball was one of 4 daughters born to Mary Johnson and her first husband (William Johnson?). When Joseph Ball married the Widow Mary Johnson, he gave the name of Ball to Nancy Ann. Mary Ball was half-sister to Nancy Ann. Mary Johnson
was Joseph's second wife. It appears that Mary Johnson was not the biological mother of Georges
Washington's mother, Mary Ball. Any thoughts. Appreciate your response. Vince Szenas.3 Mary Bennett was born circa 1665 at King George, Virginia, USA. She married Col. Joseph Ball, son of Col. William (II) Ball and Hannah Atherold, after 6 February 1707; his 2nd wife. Hill [1990:45] says m. ca Feb 1707/8; 1 child.4,3
Mary Bennett died in 1721.4

Her estate was probated on 19 July 1721 at Northumberland Co., Virginia, USA; Hill [1990:45] cites Northumberland Co., VA Record Bk 1718-1726:177-176a.3 [sic]
Mary Bennett per Donald J. Tucker (CompuServe] 21 June 1995: "Mary Ball Washington (GW's mother) was the daughter of Joseph Ball and his second wife Mary Montague Johnson, a widow. This Joseph was the son of William Ball and Hannah Atherall, the founder of the VA line. Joseph's male line ended with his son Joseph. All the Ball surname lines that continued forward were from the elder Joseph's brother, William."

per "Ball Families of Virginia's Northern Neck: An Outline", compiled by Margaret Lester Hill for Mary Ball Washington Museum & Library, Inc., 1990, p. 45: "The maiden name of Mary Johnson Ball is unknown. Some researchers believe it was MONTAGUE, because her grandson, George Washington, use a flying griffen similar to the one on the Montague crest as his personal seal. Others think she was a BENNETT [Wm & Mary Qtrly, 2nd series, 15:176-177]. Rev. Horace Hayden, in "Virginia Genealogies (p. 47) referred to her as "an Englishwoman."

per Roberts, G. B. [1995] p.1: "m. (3) Richard Hewes; very likely she was the Mary Bennett of West Chester, England who m. William Johnson of Norwich, Middlesex Co., VA 10 Feb. 1688/9 & was probably a new kinswoman of a Thomas Bennett of Westmoreland Co., living 1738/9.5,6 Mary Bennett was also known as Mary Montague.

Susan Elvira Hudson "Elvira" per Alexis Briscoe death certificate.
"Susan Elizabeth" per Ron Brown 7/27/93.
Susan Elvira Hudson was a witness to the      N. B. There is some confusion concerning the parents of the Elizabeth HUDSON who married Alexander "Sandy" PRATT. Some researchers believe the parents were Zadock and Mildred (Adkinson) HUDSON. This relationship has been posted on Elizabeth and Zadock's Find A Grave memorial pages and some family trees (e.g., THE Tom Pratt Family Tree). Others believe that Elizabeth's parents were David and Ann (Caswell) HUDSON (e.g., the Smith- Evans- Sanders- Ittner Family Tree).
While I have so far found no definitive proof of who her parents were, I do not believe that they were Zadock and Mildred (Adkinson) HUDSON. Zadock was born in SC and his wife in TN. Zadock died in MS in 1855 and appears there in both the 1840 and 1850 federal censuses.
On the other hand, Elizabeth was born in VA (1826) and married Alexander PRATT in Warren Co., MO in 1844. I find it unlikely that Elizabeth's parents would have moved to MS by 1840, but would have left her in VA (or in MO).
Alexander's nephew, Thomas P. PRATT (son of Alexander's brother, Thomas Briscoe PRATT), married Susan Elvira HUDSON, the daughter of David and Anna (Caswell) HUDSON. Elizabeth (HUDSON) PRATT was born in VA in 1826. Susan Elvira (HUDSON) PRATT was born in VA in 1829. David and Anna (Caswell) HUDSON were traveling from Culpeper Co., VA to Warren Co., MO ca 1834 when David apparently died enroute. Their youngest sister, Virginia Ann HUDSON, was born in MO in 1835, after Ann (CASWELL) HUDSON had arrived. Finally, in the 1830 census for Culpeper Co., VA, David appears with two daughters aged "Under 5" (i.e., born after 1825). the daughters Elizabeth and Susan match this perfectly. His third daughter was born until around (or just after) the time he died ca 1834/5. The 1840 Census (Elkhorn Twp., Warren Co., MO) shows an Ann HUDSON (with no adult male), with 6 children that perfectly match the age distribution of all of the known children, plus a daughter of the age of Elizabeth (b1826).
This circumstantial evidence leads me to believe that it is more credible to assume that Elizabeth B. (HUDSON) PRATT was the dau. of David and Ann (CASWELL) HUDSON, and not of Zadock and Mildred (Adkinson) HUDSON. GA Vaut with Elizabeth B. Hudson.9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17

"There is a J. FRANKLIN listed in the index of Mississippi for 1840. He is in Noxubee county on page 93. There is also a David FRANKLIN listed in 1840 in Itawamba county on page 149."

[2] per Jean Carruthers Old Family Group Sheet (dtd. 10 Sept. 1993): "...While researching for records on my grandparents, George Madison and Permelia Adaline Franklin Carruthers, I found land records for Jessie L/S. Franklin in 1853. A Deed in Records of Itawamba Co., Miss. where Jesse L/S Franklin purchased land from Wm. H. Kyle for the sum of twelve hundred dollars on 16th day of February 1853
...Jessie L. and Julia Shaw Franklin moved to Texas along with the Shaws in the early 1850's to Kaufman Co., Texas.
...Jessie S. died between 1857 and 1860 and we are not sure just where he is buried, at the Fox Cemetery, named for Dr. Joseph Fox, husband of Elizabeth Shaw, Julia's sister, or at Kemp where the other Shaw's are buried.

Julia Shaw was buried at Fox Cemetery(?), Rand, Kaufman Co., Texas, USA; per Norma Jean Carruthers Old 5 Aug 1993: "We are not sure whether Julia and Jesse Franklin are buried in the Fox Cemetery at Rand, but this family cemetery was near where the Franklins lived and Elizabeth Shaw Fox was Julia's oldest sister."3 She was born on 6 July 1813 at Maury Co., Tennessee, USA; Aged 37 in 1850 census and POB=Ala; aged 46 in 1860 census and POB=Tenn
per Fox Cemetery Assn family tree on Ancestry: "There is some debate as to where her family lived in 1813, the year of her birth. On the 1860 Census, she lists her birthplace as Tennessee. In 1850, 1870, and 1880 she lists North Carolina. However, tax lists show her father to be in Maury Co., Tennessee in 1812. Unless he mother stayed behind in North Carolina, I think we have to go with the Tennessee birthplace. Julia knew her parents were from North Carolina, and that she wasn't born in Alabama like many of her siblings, perhaps she was confused?"4,2,5,1,6,7 She married Joseph C. Arthur on 9 December 1828 at Green Co., Alabama, USA.8 Julia Shaw married Jesse S. Franklin, son of Abner Franklin and Rhoda Cleveland, on 30 November 1838 at Noxubee Co., Mississippi, USA; his 2nd wife

Julia Shaw Per Norma Jean Carruthers Old (5 Aug. 1993):

Julia Shaw Franklin was born in Tennessee in 1814. Her father was James Shaw, the son of Benjamin Shaw of Guilford Co., NC and Catherine Elliott, who was an orphan, born in VA. Julia had 5 brothers and 2 sisters...Julia Shaw and Husband, Jesse Franklin came to Texas in the 1850's to Kaufman Co. We are not sure whether Julia and Jesse Franklin are buried in the Fox Cemetery at Rand, but this family cemetery was near where the Franklins lived and Elizabeth Shaw Fox was Julia's oldest sister. Jesse S/L Franklin had died by 1860 per Census. Julia Shaw Franklin died between 1880-1900, per census.

Lucy A. Franklin was born circa 1835 at Alabama, USA; aged 15 in 1850 census and POB=AL
Kevin Wornell (21 May 1993) speculates that Lucy, George ARTHUR, and Ann may be children of Julia by a prior husband, given that their parents (Jessie and Julia) were apparently married in 1838, three-five years after they were born, and all three were born in Alabama where Julia was born.3,1,2 She married Newton A. Barton on 22 February 1856 at Itawamba Co., Mississippi, USA.2,4
Lucy A. Franklin died on 7 August 1888 at Kaufman Co., Texas, USA.2
Lucy A. Franklin possibly a daughter of Jesse by an earlier marriage or a younger relative of Jesse's, based on Jesse/Julia marriage was 30 Nov. 1838, while Lucy's age in the 1850 Itawamba Co., census is given as 15 (i.e., born circa 1835).3,5

William Roberts      [1] per Kevin Wornell 20 May 1993: "A book on Cherokee county estates shows a William ROBERTS who left everything to Nancy, as Administrator she made bond on 12-31-1868. He is also listed as being a 2nd Lt. in Company F., 35th Texas Cavalry, Thomas' Division with an enlistment date of Sept. 1863."

Nancy Gilbert was a witness to the Many sources assign Nancy Gilbert (John Danks' 2nd wife) as the mother of George, Elizabeth, William, Rebecca Ann, and Nancy. However, Information is John remarried to Nancy Gilbert in 1801. So if the data on the birthdates of these first 5 children are correct, it seems more likely that these children were by his first wife, Ann Ross, and not by his 2nd wife, Nancy Gilbert.      Martha E. Stewart was born on 23 May 1822 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, USA.2,1 She married James L. Howell on 22 December 1842.
Martha E. Stewart died on 11 March 1903 at age 80.2
Martha E. Stewart and James L. Howell The birth and death dates of James Howell and his wife Martha E. Stewart appear in the Pratt family Bible, along with the family of Alexis Briscoe Pratt (who was about the age of their children).
Is there a family relationship between the PRATT and HOWELL families?
Is Martha E. (Stewart) HOWELL the same Martha E. who was the daugter of Grief Stewart and Mary Polly Cahal? If the two Marthas are the same person, then she was the aunt of Alexis's wife, Mary Elizabeth McGinnis (who was the dau. of Martha's sister, Leurena/Lurena Ann Stewart McGinnis).
It also seems that the year of birth (1822) and birth state (Virginia) for each Martha is the same based on available evidence.
The HOWELL and PRATT families were all living close to each other in 1860 and 1870.
-- James & Martha HOWELL appear in the 1860 federal census for Warrenton, Twp Warren Co., MO and they are on the same page as Martha E. Stewart's brother, Peter P. Stewart.
-- In the 1860 census, Grief Steward and his family were living in Elkhorn Twp., just next to Warrenton/Elkhorn.
-- In the 1870 census for Elkhorn Twp, Warren Co. Alexis's parents and family were in Hickory Grove, just next to Warrenton/Elkhorn.
-- In the 1880 federal census for Elkhorn Twp, Martha HOWELL, and Alexis and Mary E (McGinnis) PRATT are living in the same household.
Based on this evidence, I have concluded that the two Martha E. Stewarts were the same person.3,4,5,6 The birth and death dates of James Howell and his wife Martha E. Stewart appear in the Pratt family Bible, along with the family of Alexis Briscoe Pratt.2
