This was presented by Rev. J. W. Lissenden who, in connection with his speech of presentation, read the following poem composed by Joseph H. West:
ODD FELLOWS' OFFERING.
We knew thee in young manhood's days
Ere later trials had come;
Brothers and sisters, too, there were
Around a father's home.
And when the Nation called for men.
Rank treason to subdue.
We saw thee lead away a band
Of sturdy Boys in Blue.
And when the people did to thee
A high position give.
We gave the grip and hailed thee as
The county's chief executive.
And when bereavement bowed thy head
Along with other cares,
We came to sympathize with thee
And drop some silent tears.
Thy seventy-fifth birthday is here
And we, a happy band,
Now ask the Lord to keep thee in
The hollow of His hand.

Had one traveled that same road more than 200 hears ago he would have seen a large farm house in almost the same location as the present dwelling. This was the Mount homestead erected some years prior to the Revolutionary War. Richard Mount was the first of that name to own this land. The exact date that he purchased this land is not known, but in an old paper, executed in 1797, whereby Mary Mount, daughter, conveyed to her brother Matthias her undivided twelfth part of the plantation. The original tract was 247 acres. Tradition states that Richard and his son Matthias were both in the War of the Revolution, both enlisting as soldiers. The records of the Adjutant Generals Office show that Richard and Matthias enlisted from Middlesex County. The original Middlesex County line was then only a short distance from the Mount Farm. Richard had two sons and eight daughters.
Calendar of Wills 1786-1790 Volume 36 1787 March 15 Mount, Richard of Nottingham Township, Burlington Co., Adm'rs - Joseph Disbrow and Matthias Mount, both of said place. He served in the American Revolution. He died prior to Mar 14, 1787, the date that the inventory of his estate was made (and attested on Mar 15, 1787.) He married at least two time. Upon his death, his son, Matthias, along with James Disbrow were made administrators of his estate and became guardians of his minor children: Mary, Joseph, Rebecca and Catherine. ; from Mount Family USA All Generations tree: "THE MOUNT HOMESTEAD: Sharps Avenue begins at Nottingham Way, Hamilton Square, N.J. and runs north to the Edinburg Road.
(One decendent says three times). RichardMount is the ancestor of the Mount Family of Hamilton Square, New Jersey. Upon his death, his son, Matthias, along with James Disbrow were made administrators of his estate and became guardians of his minor children: Mary, Joseph, Rebecca and Catherine. (Burlington Co., New Jersey Records)."14,15
Richard Mount began military service circa 1776 at Revolutionary War, New Jersey, USA, New Jersey militia.12

EDV-7.
; from Mount Family USA All Generations tree: "Found in the Historical and Genealogical Miscellany, New York and New Jersey Vol.-4He resided in Middletown and moved to Cranbury with his family about 1711. It has been said that this move was over an argument with the elders of the Baptist Church in Middletown, but whatever the reason, he associated with the Presbyterian Church in Cranbury after this date. Richard Mount married prior to 1687, Rebecca Wall, as appears in the court records of that date, at Freehold, New Jersey. Garret Wall, brother, gave evidence concerning the mare that he gave his sister, Rebecca, wife of Richard Mount. She was the daughter of Walter and Anne (...) Wall. Walter Wall and his family came to Middletown from Gravesend, Long Island, and took up town lot No. 4. He was a Baptist, being one of the original members of the First Baptist Church at Middletown, New Jersey. New Jersey Post-Revolutionary Documents 1787 March 15. Mount, Richard ofNottingham Township, Burlington County.
13 April 1698: George Mount conveyed 185 acres of land in Middletown to his son, Richard Mount. Since his son, Richard, is not mentioned to receive anything in the will of George Mount, his father, in 1702, it is believed that this gift cut him off as an heir-at-law.
March 17, 1703: Middletown Deed Book I, page 342: Richard Mount as heir of George Mount, to Richard Marsh, 8-9 acres at Poplar Field. This was part of the George Mount patent of 20 June 1677, lying next to land formerly owned by John Throckmorton.
March 28, 1703: Richard Mount of Middletown was referred to as son and heir to George Mount, now deceased. He made his mark to documents rather than a signature. March 13, 1710: Richard Mount sold land to Eden "Burroues" of Jamaica, Long Island, New York. Eden Burroughs had a wife, Rachel, who may have been a daughter of Richard and Rebecca (Wall) Mount.
June 5, 1710, Deed Book B2, page 422: 500 plus 40 acres from John Harrison in Cranbury lying between Cranbury Brook and Millstone Brook, next to Thomas Morford. This same deed was recorded again in Deed Book C2, page 516, Febuary 19, 1719. On the back of the second deed is an addendum: Richard Mount made a deed to Joseph Dennis for 200 acres of this parcel for 5 schillings.
March 12, 1711, Deed Book B2, page 421: Richard Mount of Middlesex County, yeoman, conveyed "...to my son, Richard Mount, Jr. of the same place, 200 acres at Cranbury, adjoining Thomas Morford and bounded on the west by land intended for my son, George Mount and his wife, Rebecca.
March 3, 1717, Deed Book C2, page 475: Richard Mount and Rachel, his wife, made a conveyance to Joseph Dennis, Cooper for 200 acres (See Deed Book C2, page 516, Feb 19, 1719, addendum on reverse side). Jan 5,
1723, Deed Book F2, page 274 (recorded 10 July 1744): Richard Mount, Sr., of Middlesex County and Rebecca, his wife, conveyed to Humphrey Mount, yeoman, 200 acres on the south side of Cranbury Brook adjoining his brother, Richard Mount, land for 200 pounds, witnessed by Matthias Mount, who acknowledged the deed, May 15, 1774, and Joseph Britton, Matthias Mount was his son, while Joseph Britton was his son-in-law."9
Richard Mount Sr. and Rebecca Wall were mentioned in a land transaction on 25 January 1723 at Cranberry Creek, Cranbury Township, Middlesex Co., New Jersey, USA,

; From Lee: Memorial of Mercer Co., NJ V1 (p. 262): [quote] George Mount, of Rhode Island, who removed to Middletown, Monmouth county, New Jersey, in 1665, supposed to be of French origin. In religious faith and profession he was of the Presbyterian church. He was a deputy to the first general assembly held at Portland Point, in 1668. He died in 1705. He married a lady named Katherine, by whom were born these children: Matthias, Richard, and Catherine, with possibly others. The son Matthias died in 1695, leaving issue.
The descendants of ancestor George Mount settled to a great extent in Monmouth and Middlesex counties, New Jersey. One named Richard came to Nottingham township, Burlington county, now Hamilton township, Mercer county, and settled on a large farm one mile east of Mercerville, previous to 1765. Both he and his son Matthias served in the Revolutionary war, and the state records display the names of Richard and Matthias Mount. Richard died in 1787, leaving two sons and eight daughters. His eldest son Matthias became the owner of the homestead and much land in other parts. He married Elizabeth Chambers, and died in 1837, having had seven sons and two daughters. His son Elijah was the father of Edward P. Mount.
Elijah Mount, son of Matthias and Elizabeth (Chambers) Mount, was bom in 1802, and died in 1858. By occupation he was a farmer. He received his education in the country schools. Like his parents, he too was of the Presbyterian faith. Politically he was a Federalist and Whig. He married Sarah Schenck, widow of Elias Vannest, a descendant of the numerous family of Schencks of New Jersey, born in 1803, and died at Hamilton Square, 1877.
Edward P. Mount, son of Elijah and Sarah (Schenck) Mount, was born near Newtown, New Jersey, October 14, 1835. and became a prominent figure in the war of the rebellion. He enlisted in the Seventy-first Regiment of New York Volunteers, April, 1861, and took part in the first battle of Bull Run ; mustered out August 2,
1861, then raised a company for the Sixty-first Regiment, and participated in the battles of Yorktown, Fair Oaks, Peach Orchard, Savage Station, White Oak Swamp, Glendale, and Malvern Hill. He was mustered out again August 1, 1862, on surgeon's certificate that change of climate would only save his life. After recovering he raised Company C, of the Second New Jersey Regiment (cavalry), was mustered in the third time September 9, 1863, and was in the battles of Fairfax, Virginia; luka, Mississippi; Jackson, Mississippi ; Aberdeen, Mississippi ; West Point, Mississippi; Okalona, Mississippi; Lagrange, Tennessee ; Jackson, Tennessee ; Abbeville, Mississippi ; Tallahatchee River Tupelo, Egypt Station, and was finally mustered out October 2, 1865.
In politics Mr. Mount is a lifelong Republican. Among the official positions he has held may be named tax-collector of Hamilton township, which office he held for five years, and the office of county treasurer for Mercer county, being the present incumbent. He attends the Presbyterian church, and is a member of the Grand Army of the Republic.
Mr. Mount was united in marriage January 2, 1883, to Annie Elizabeth Wilkes, daughter of Joseph and Mary A. Wilkes. Mrs. Mount is a collateral descendant of John Paul Jones, (through her mother) the famous sea fighter, from his niece Polly Jones, who came to Virginia whence some of the family removed to New Jersey. The children born to Mr. and Mrs. Mount are: Sarah Wilkes, born 1883, educated at the Model School at Trenton, New Jersey, and Broad
Street Conservatory of Music, Philadelphia. Bessie May, born 1888, educated at the Trenton high school. Edward Wilkes. Norman Howard.
JOSEPH S. MOUNT, an influential and prosperous farmer and general business man of Hamilton township, Mercer county. New Jersey, is a representative of one of the old families in the state, whose genealogical history will be found in the sketch of Edward P. Mount, immediately preceding this. Joseph S. Mount was actively engaged in military service during the Civil war, and has taken a leading and spirited part in the public affairs of the county, having held, with great benefit to the interests of the county, a number of public offices.
Elijah Mount, father of Joseph S. Mount, married Sarah Schenck, and had children: i. William B., bom August 15, 1829, unmarried. 2. Joseph S., see forward. 3. Elizabeth, born November 25, 1833 ; -married Reuben Norris and had children: Eliza. Sadie, married William Cubberly and had children: Ernest and Norris. James C, married Sadie Pierce and had children: James, Eugene, Elizabeth, Mount, and Benjamin. 4. Edward P., born October 14, 183s, married Annie E. Wilkes, and had children: Sarah Wilkes, Bessie May, Edward Wilkes, and Norman Howard. 5. Harrison, bom November 26, 1836, married, and has one child:
Sadie. 6. Caroline P., bom May 29, 1839, married Lisle Pierson and had children: William and Edward P. 7. Ridgeway C, born February 18, 1841, married Kate • 8. Samuel, bom October 19, 1843, married Cordelia Cub-
berly.
Joseph S. Mount, second son and child of Elijah and Sarah (Schenck) Mount, was bom on the old homestead in Hamilton township, Mercer county, New Jersey, November 29, 1831. His education was obtained in the public schools of the district, and he soon commenced to assist in the cultivation of the home farm. This consisted of two hundred and thirty-five acres which had been acquired by Matthias Mount, and which had originally been purchased from Daniel Chambers. Upon the death of the father of Joseph S. Mount, the farm was divided and sold — seventy-two acres at the north end being purchased by Joel Taylor, and Joseph S. and his Brother William. purchasing one hundred and sixty acres at the south end of the property. They sold seventy-one acres of this to Wilson Miller, who resold it to Edwin Davis, the father of Henry Davis, John Davis and Edwin Davis, Jr. The Mount farm now ( 1906) consists of eighty-three acres of the original land, with the addition of eighty-eight acres bought from the Cubberly property on the north side of Main road. Mr. Mount is a man of great energy and enterprise. In addition to attending to the cultivation of his farm in a model manner, he has for many years been engaged in general mercantile business, which he has made very profitable. He has also taken an active interest in all matters pertaining to the welfare and im
provement of the township in every direction.
Among the offices he has held may be mentioned : Assessor for four years; freeholder for four years ; and sheriff of the county from 1875 until 1878. His political affiliations are with the Republican party. His military career is one which
deserves to be recorded. Upon the nine months' call being issued in 1861, Mr. Mount enlisted as a private in the Twenty-first New Jersey volunteers, and was elected captain of Company E, by popular vote. He was attached to the Army of the Potomac, Third Brigade, Sixth Corps, and participated in a number of important battles. He is a member of Hamilton Grange, and of Hamilton Lodge, No. 97, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, since 1856. His father was a charter member of the last named lodge.
Upon the occasion of the seventy-fifth birthday of Mr. Mount, which was celebrated at his own home by a large number of invited guests, he was the recipient of a number of valuable gifts, among which may be mentioned : A handsome leather tufted chair and couch, a goldheaded cane, and a veteran's jewel on behalf of the Odd Fellows, he having been a member of the order for fifty years. This was presented by Rev. J. W. Lissenden who, in connection with his speech of presentation, read the following poem composed by Joseph H. West:
ODD FELLOWS' OFFERING.
We knew thee in young manhood's days
Ere later trials had come;
Brothers and sisters, too, there were
Around a father's home.
And when the Nation called for men.
Rank treason to subdue.
We saw thee lead away a band
Of sturdy Boys in Blue.
And when the people did to thee
A high position give.
We gave the grip and hailed thee as
The county's chief executive.
And when bereavement bowed thy head
Along with other cares,
We came to sympathize with thee
And drop some silent tears.
Thy seventy-fifth birthday is here
And we, a happy band,
Now ask the Lord to keep thee in
The hollow of His hand.

Monmouth Patent Granted taken from "THIS OLD MONMOUTH OF OURS."

Monmouth Patent Granted
When the ensign of the Netherlands was hauled down in supine surrender at the fort in New Amsterdam and in its place the hoisted British flag was boldly flung to flaunt its bravery to the breeze, the Dutch grip on the Jersies was broken, save for one final convulsive effort, and her fair field were laid open to English settlers and to English settlement.
The Monmouth Patent
Captain John Bowne and his associates had, as has already been told, anticipated the British conquest of New Netherland, and had negotiated with the Indians for the lands of their desire. They had even made the beginnings of a settlement near the site of the present village of Middletown. Now, they proceeded to obtain from the Royal Governor, Colonel Richar Nicholls, confirmation and sanction of their purchases from the Indians and authority for the carrying out of the plans and purposes whereby they aspired and hoped to plant for themselves and for their children and their children's children the seeds of a commonwealth whose foundations should be laid in honor and built upon in that ordered freedom of conscience and of action that would know no limits save only those properly imposed by common consent, voices through representatives chosen by ballot.
On their petition Letters Patent were issued (April 8, 1665) by Governor Nicholls granting these lands and this authority to the twelve men ever after to be known as the patentees of Monmouth: William Goulding (Golden), Samuel Spicer, Richard Gibbons, Richard Stout, James Grover, John Bowne, John Tilton, Nathanial Sylvester, William Reape, Walter Clark, Nichols Davis, and, Obediah Holmes.
Sanctions and Limitations
By these Letters Patent, the Patentees and their Associates were bound to settle on the lands granted them, within three years of the date of the Patent, at least one-hundred families. By them they were granted, Liberty of Conscience and of Worship, the right to build villages at places of their own selection, and the authority to erect Courts for the trial of Small Causes, criminal jurisdiction being, for the time, withheld. By them they were empowered, moreover, to elect by majority vote five or seven other persons to act with them, with full power and authority to make prudential Laws and Constitutions.
Territory Covered by Patent
The extent and boundaries of the tract comprehended in the Monmouth, or Nicholls, Patent are somewhat vague and uncertain -- its western side not being described with sufficient exactitude to permit its true courses to be definitively determined. The reason for this is probably that the Patentees themselves had no very clear ideas on the subject. It was not until a dozen years later (1676) that the line, ever since marking the western borders of Monmouth, was run from Little-Egg-Harbor toward the Delaware. Roughly speaking, the grant, or Patent, may be said to have comprised the present Monmouth and Ocean counties, with segments of Mercer and Middlesex.
The patent leaves some doubt, also, as to whether the Reverend Obadiah Holmes and John Tilton, Sr., were of the original Patentees, or whether John Tilton, Jr., and Obadiah Holmes, Jr., are intended.
The Monmouth Patent Voided The Patent itself was almost at once set aside in favor of the grant to Berkly and Carteret, which had, in fact, been executed at a date earlier than that on which Colonel Nicholls had signed the Monmouth Patent. It is in this Berkely and Carteret conveyance that the name Nova Cesarea, or New Jersey, is first used. Futile legal processes to sustain the Monmouth and other simila Patents were at once set on foot, and some of the cases arising under these were still pending in the courts at the outbreak of the Revolution.
The Lords Proprietors did, however, so far recognize some equity as accuring to the Monmouth Patentees under their patent that they granted tracts of 500 acres to each of the Twelve, in recognition of or as compensation for their claims.
(What is known as the Schenck-Couvenhoven burying-ground is located on the five-hundred-acre allotment so made to Captain John Bowne. In early days this was considered the choicest bit of farmland in Monmouth.)
The Actual Settlement
Under the terms of their patent the grantees were bound to settle on the territory covered by it, within the space of three years, one-hundred or more families - in Town or Village, the houses of which were to be not too far distant from each other to preclude mutual support and protection. In compliance with there conditions the families of John Bowne, Richard Stout, James Grover, and Richard Gibbons, aldready there, were soon added to by numbers of their associates and by others seeking homes in the new "Development." Land- speculators, too, put in appearance and were very much in evidence - making use of tricks and devices, still current with us, that were already hoary with age in the day of Abraham.
Formal Organization of Monmouth
Under the headship of Captain John Bowne the little community at once set about organizing itself. The near-by lands were surveyed, under the supervision of James Grover, and were mapped-out (Dec. 30, 1667) into town-lots, out-lots, and salt-meadow lots. Three townships were erected - Middletown, largely settled by Batpists, Portland, also largely Baptist, and Shrewsbury, in which the Friends, or Quakers, predominated. Of these townships, Portland lapsed after a few years. Villages were planned and plotted at Middletown, Portland Point, Pot-a-peek, and Shrewsbury. Additional lands were bought from the Indians, both by the Patentees and by individual purchasers. Church, mill, school-house, and jail were provided for, township officers were selected, and a House of Deputies or General Assembly, chosen, of which Captian John Bown was the first Speaker.
In 1667 Richard Richardson was appointed Recorder in General; William Goulding (Golden),John Bowne, John Tilton, James Grover, Richard Stout, Samuel Spicer, and Richard Gibbons, Custodians of the moneys of the three townships - Portland, Middletown, and Shrewsbury; and, on Dec.12th of the same year the following officials were elected:
For Middletown - Richard Gibbons, Constable; Jonathan Holmes and William Lawrence, Overseers; and Stephen Arnold and James Ashton, Deputies.
For Portland - Henry Percy and Richard Richardson, Overseers; James Bowne, Deputy.
For Shrewsbury - Peter Parker, Constable; Christopher Allmy and Edward Edward Pattison, Overseers; Eliakim Wardell and Bartholomew West, Deputies.
The Deputies, together with the Patentees, made up the House of Assembly, sometimes called the House of Deputies, and sometimes the General Court - a House that under the astute and vigorous leadership of John Bowne, Richard Hartshorne, and others, stood ever between the covetous greed of the Proprietors and rapacious Royal Governors and the toiling masses, these would exploit to their own aggrandizement. They used as their chief weapon the control of the Assembly over money-bills and taxation - a weapon which has since been recognized as the only sure protection against tyrants and tyranny.
The Overseers may, perhaps, be regarded as corresponding in a measure to the Freeholders of a later day, or or to the Supervisors of sister states.
While the earlier archives of our people have not been preserved, and information concerning the activities of their first few years is obtainable only through more or less imperfect copies of the older records, and through extracts from them and from incidental references and ancient traditions; yet it is probably true that nothing of really vital or fundamental value has been lost and that material exists, which, if brought together, would make possible the drawing of a picture of the times, true, vivid, absorbing, that would even include many of the lesser details and nuances that give life and color to history.
It would appear that the financial basis of the colonization rested on the sale of shares in the enterprise, some of which shares remained with the Twelve Proprietors, some went to actual settlers, and some went to friends and well-wishers of the undertaking, in Rhode Island, Long Island, and elsewhere; while still others went to those who were "willing to take a chance" - for there were speculators then, as now. The chief source of income was, of course, through the sales of land to actual settlers, or those who bought to sell again as the values of land should be enhanced.
The Men Who Came To Monmouth
From the limitations and conditions contained in the Monmouth Patent, and for other reasons, the period between 1665 and 1670 may be considered as marking the first wave of early settlement, and the settlers coming within our first lustre as being the Founders of Monmouth.
Among the actors in this living drama, this moving-picture, we may find side by side, the wise and simple men who sought but the shelter and protection of their own vine and fig-tree, with the privilege of rearing families in the fear of God; adventurers pure and simple; rovers who stayed not long in any place, but ever pressed-on in quest of fabled Isles of Blessedness; and, too, those who came to stay, but, discouraged by the hardships of pioneer life or the querulous complaints of their women-kind, soon returned whence they came, those who came simply as speculators and flitted away when they had sold out at a profit; and those who came but for a season, only to perfect their land-titles by a "window-dressing" show of at least a hundred families within the alloted time, for, while the Monmouth Patent was still in litigation its terms must be complied with. Some of these early settlers maintained residences in the places of their former habitation as well as in Monmouth - and were counted as residents of both places. There were others, too, floaters and men of lesser breed.
Many of those who were most vitally interested in the success of the Monmouth settlement and most active in bringing it about, including seven out of the Twelve Patentees, never came to our county at all (though the children or other members of the families of some of them did). or came in the sloops that were constantly plying between our own waters and those of Eastern ports, for brief visits of inspection and encouragement.
All these, such as they were, became our ancestors - lineal or constructive. For this reason a brief glance at each of thse various individuals, concerning whom we have knowledge, may serve to take them out of the class of meaningless items in a list of names and make them stand out as living entities - whose blood flows in our veins, whose influence in forming and shaping our community in its nonage still bears fruit among us and is indelibly stamped upon our civic and political institutions - men whose deeds and memories deserve to be held in pride and honor.
These were:
The Tweleve Patentees, who have been already named;
The first Lot owners of Middletown: - John Ruckman, Edward Tartt, John Wilson, Walter Wall, John Smith, Richard Stout, Richard Gibbons, Thomas Cos, Jonathon Holmes, George Mount, William Cheeseman, Anthony Page, Samuel Holman, William Laiton (Layton, Lawton), William Compton, James Grover, Stephen Arnold, Samuel Spicer, John Stout, Obadiah Holmes, Benjamin Devell, Job Throckmorton, James Aston, John Throckmorton, John Bowne, Benjamin Borden, Edward Smith, William Lawrence, David Edsell, Robert James, Thomas Whitlock, Richard Sadler, and, James Grover.
The first Lot owners at Portland Point (Atlantic Highlands) - John Horabin, James Bowne, Richard Richardson, Randall Huet, Sr., Henry Percy, John Bird, Randall Huet, Jr., William Bowne, and, William Shackerly.
The Township men, or Middletown and Shrewsbury;
The original share holders and first subsequent purchasers;
The not inconsiderable number of "first settlers" who can be classed with none of these.
Included among all these were the Associates of the Patentees - William Bowne, Thomas Whitlock, John Wilson, John Ruckman, Walter Wall, John Smith, Richard Richardson, John Horabin, James Bowne, Jonathan Holmes, Christopher Allmy, Eliakim Wardell, Bartholomew West, John Haunce, James Ashton, Edward Pattison, William Shaddock, Thomas Winterton, Edward Tartt, Benjamn Burden, Richard Lippencott, and, Nicholas Brown.
In 1668 the citizens of Monmouth were called upon to take the oath of Allegiance to the British Crown. In the same year Luke Watson and Samuel Moore were appointed Collectors of Rates.
In 1668 James Bowne was made County Clerk, and Richard Stout, Jonathan Holmes, Edward Smith, and John Bowne were the Overseers.
At a meeting of the Court, or General Assembly, held at Portland Point, Nov. 2, 1669, the following were present: James Ashton, Constable; Richard Stout, James Grover, John Bowne, and James Bowne, Patentees; Jonathan Holmes and Edward Smith, Deputies.
(James Bowne and William Bowne, his father, of Newasink Neck, had been appointed as Acting Patentees, in place of John Tilton and Samuel Spicer, of Gravesend, and it is as such substitutes that their names sometimes appear among the Patentees. John Ruckman seems to have been added to the Acting Patentees a little later.)
At a subsequent meeting of the Assembly, at Portland Point, Dec. 28, 1669, there were present: John Bowne, James Grover, Richard Gibbons, Richard Stout, WIlliam Bowne, and John Ruckman, Patentees; James Bowne, Jonathan Homes, Edward Smith, Richard Lippencott, and John Haunce, Deputies and Overseers; and, James Ashton, Constable.
(The office of Constable was one of much greater importance and dignity, as well as of greater scope in power and authority, in Colonial times than it is to-day. The same may be said of the Office of Justice of the Peace - to be a Member of the Quorum was, in early days, a very high honor indeed.)17
George Mount left a will on 16 February 1702/3 at Middletown, Monmouth Co., New Jersey, USA; Will abstract seen on Find A Grave (attached):

George Mount was buried in August 1705 at Middletown Baptist Churchyard Cemetery, Middletown, Monmouth Co., New Jersey, USA; from Find A Grave:
BIRTH 18 Mar 1626, Boughton Aluph, Ashford Borough, Kent, England
DEATH Aug 1705 (aged 79), Middletown, Monmouth County, New Jersey, USA
In 1672, George Mount's name was coupled together with Benjamin Borden in the purchase of lands from the Indians at Middletown, and again, in 1676, the same individuals, George Mount and Benjamin Borden, received patents for lands adjacent to each other in Cohansey, West Jersey. This intimate association raised a hope in the minds of some that the maiden name of the wife, or the mother of George Mount, was perhaps Borden, but a study of the wills of Matthew Borden, of Hedcorn, England, and his two emigrating sons, Richard and John, eliminates any such conclusion, and we are forced to decide that the intimate relations of Mount and Borden were based upon friendship and not kinship. Further it might be well here to eliminate another suggestion, that George Mount married a sister of Abigail Grover, wife of Benjamin Borden, but this, too, falls to the ground when an analysis of the known Grover history is made.
Upon his advent in Middletown, George Mount received in the first division of lands, Dec. 30 and 31, 1667, the town lot No. 10, and the outlying lot No. 19. 1688, Apr 22. George Mount was one of the two Deputies chosen to the General Assembly to be held at Portland Point, and, July 20, 1669, he was re-elected. He likewise filled the positions of Juryman, Town Overseer and Surveyor. He is alluded in deeds as a blacksmith, which in those days, meant a worker in iron, and in such an avocation, many of the artists and artisans of mediæval times have created lasting monuments of great beauty. There was little call, however, for a display of much talent, in the early days of Middletown, but we can readily see George Mount fashioning the iron work of the villages, from the scythe and plow to the hinges and latches. Few men could be more valuable than he in such an environment.
1688: George Mount was one of the Constituent Members of the Baptist Church of Middletown.
1698, Apr. 13: George Mount conveyed to his son, Richard Mount, one hundred and eighty-five acres of land, in Middletown township, which, in 1710, formed part of the two hundred acres of land which Richard Mount sold to Eden Burrowes, and inasmuch as Richard Mount is not mentioned in his father's will, this land probably represented his interest in his father's estate and the gift cut him off as heir-at-law.
George Mount presumably married about 1660.
1702-3, Feb. 16: he made his will; proved Aug. 31, 1705, and mentioned his wife, Katherine; daughter Katherine; grandsons, Matthias and Thomas, sons of his deceased son, Matthias.
1705, Sep 18: Inventory of George Mount's estate was made by Richard Stout and James Cox, at Middletown, and proved by James Cox, appraiser. (R-wolfordsheppard)

George Mount died before 31 August 1705 at Middletown, Monmouth Co., New Jersey, USA; Date of probate.1,6
His estate was probated on 31 August 1705 at Middletown, Monmouth Co., New Jersey, USA.6
; From Lee: Memorial of Mercer Co., NJ V1 (p.
Ere later trials had come;
Brothers and sisters, too, there were
Around a father's home.

These were:
The Tweleve Patentees, who have been already named;
The first Lot owners of Middletown: - John Ruckman, Edward Tartt, John Wilson, Walter Wall, John Smith, Richard Stout, Richard Gibbons, Thomas Cos, Jonathon Holmes, George Mount, William Cheeseman, Anthony Page, Samuel Holman, William Laiton (Layton, Lawton), William Compton, James Grover, Stephen Arnold, Samuel Spicer, John Stout, Obadiah Holmes, Benjamin Devell, Job Throckmorton, James Aston, John Throckmorton, John Bowne, Benjamin Borden, Edward Smith, William Lawrence, David Edsell, Robert James, Thomas Whitlock, Richard Sadler, and, James Grover.
The first Lot owners at Portland Point (Atlantic Highlands) - John Horabin, James Bowne, Richard Richardson, Randall Huet, Sr., Henry Percy, John Bird, Randall Huet, Jr., William Bowne, and, William Shackerly.
The Township men, or Middletown and Shrewsbury;
The original share holders and first subsequent purchasers;

Katherine Bowne (?) died in 1705 at Middletown, Monmouth Co., New Jersey, USA.1
Katherine Bowne (?) was buried in 1705 at Middletown Baptist Churchyard Cemetery, Middletown, Monmouth Co., New Jersey, USA; from Find A Grave:
BIRTH unknown. Kent, England
DEATH unknown, Middletown, Monmouth County, New Jersey, USA
George Mount was a constituent member of the church in 1868. There is no grave stone or record of his burial but as a member of the church it is possible he was buried here and Katherine at a later date.
Katherine and George were the parents of:
Mathias/1658 m. Mary Wall
Katherine/1660 - death abt 1702 Cranbury, NJ (unconfirmed)
Richard/1665 m. Rebecca Wall
There is a lot of confusion as to just what Katherine's maiden name was.
(Stilwell, Historical & Genealogical Miscellany): In 1672, George Mount's name was coupled together with Benjamin Borden in the purchase of lands from the Indians at Middletown, and again, in 1676, the same individuals, George Mount and Benjamin Borden, received patents for lands adjacent to each other in Cohansey, West Jersey.
