     John Taylor Mount was born on 13 March 1849. He married Martha "Patsy" Richey on 4 October 1870 at Scott Co., Indiana, USA.

John Taylor Mount died on 11 June 1899 at age 50.

John Taylor Mount, was born in Findley township, Scott county, F eb. 4th. 1849 and grew up to be an exceptionally smart boy. A t the age of 15 years he enlisted in U.S. service as a substitut e. He served through the war and made the record of a good sold ier. He returned from the war and was married to Pattie Richey , a remarkably good looking girl of his neighborhood and they se ttled dow to a quiet farm life, four miles north of Leota, Scot t county. Seven children were born unto them and they to all ap pearances lived a peaceful and contended life. In politics he w as always a staunch Democrat, and three years ago he was electe d trustee of Findley township, in which connection he served th e public faithfully. He has acquired considerable property an d always managed his own affairs in a successful and economica l way, and about two years ago he built a handsome and commodiou s residence, which is one of the finest in the neighborhood. H e also built a fine barn and bought another farm, and was, to al l appearances getting along nicely in the world.

About four months ago he was attacked by a nervous trouble and h as been failing in health ever since and at times a defect of mi nd was noticeable. A short time ago he went to Louisville for m edical treatment and came home last Saturday week apparently muc h improved mentally. On last Friday he went to Scottsburg and r esigned his office, giving as a reason that his physician advise d it. His successor was appointed and he returned home. On Sat urday he seemed as rational as ever, selling a horse and makin g some more deals in a business like manner. But his wife had n oticed some time that he labored under a mental strain and had h id his revolver in a dresser, putting the key in his wife's pock et.

Nothing unusual was noticed in his condition Sunday and he and h is wife went out to walk over the farm. They were gone about a n hour when his mother-in-law, who was there for a short stay, n oticed their absence and sent their youngest son after them. Th e little fellow soon returned and said his father and mother wer e borth laying in†an old stable about a quarter of a mile off an d that they had blood on them and refused to talk to him. The n eighbors were called in and going where the little fellow had fo und his parents, a shocking and terrible sight met their eyes . Laying on the ground ina dying condition with a bullet hole i n each of their heads was John T. Mount and wife. They were car ried to the house, where they died a few minutes. When found h e was laying with his head resting on his wife's breast and a .3 2 caliber revolver in his hand. The revolver only had one empt y shell and it is supposed that after shooting his wife he extra cted the empty shell and replaced it with a loaded one, as eac h had a bullet hole going squarely through their brains. His wi fe still had the keys to the dresser that had contained the revo lver in her pocket and the dresser was still locked. But he ha d in some unknown way secured the revolver.

Thee does not seem to be any motive for the deed as he and his w ife had always lived very agreeably and were both highly respect ed. The affair is deeply regretted, and your reporter as well a s the entire community hasten to extend our healtfelt(sic) sympa thy to the remaining members of the bereaved family.¹

     Martha "Patsy" Richey was born on 2 February 1850. She married John Taylor Mount, son of Benjamin Franklin Mount and Susan Richey, on 4 October 1870 at Scott Co., Indiana, USA.
