Edward Apsley1
M, #73670
Last Edited | 3 Mar 2014 |
Edward Apsley was born at England; per Barbara Apsley (p. 1): "It is known that the majority of settlers that came to the Chesapeake Bay area were from the southwestern region of England - Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire, Somerset, Oxford, Gloucester, Warwick, and Worcester. The mid seventeenth century was a dark period for this region. The economy was deeply depressed, having suffered much from the violence of the Civil Wars, and the population labored severely under a regime of martial law that had been imposed by the Parliament. In addition, the woolen trade had been disrupted, so the cloth towns lost population and witnessed an increase in poverty. Major epidemics of the plague swept the area. Young men, if not the oldest son favored by inheritence laws, headed for London seeking employment, but little was to be found. With the future looking so bleak, many decided to emigrate to the colonies. By serving an indenture for a few years, a man in turn could acquire land along with his freedom. Hope was across the Atlantic."2
Edward Apsley immigrated between 27 May 1678 and 25 April 1679; per Miller: "Somewhere between May 27, 1678 and April 25, 1679, the ship Globe, commanded by Sam Groome the younger, commissioned by Sam Groome the elder, and bound to Charles Lord Baltimore, salied from the port of London to Kent Island in what is now the state of Maryland."1
Edward Apsley lived after 1679 at New Yarmouth, Kent Co., Maryland, USA; per Barbara Apsley (p. 2): "Again speculation, but Edward probably lived, worked, and died near the town of Gray's Inn Creeke at New Yarmouth. This town, started in 1675 by James Ringgold and Samuel Tovey (a town planner that Ringgold had asked to come from England to offer his expertise) was once a port of entry for all vessels and ships trading in Kent County. It stretched from Gray's Inn Creek, across Eastern Neck to the Chester River. It was a town tied to an economy dependent on the raising of crops, with tobacco being the predominant one. Little more than twenty years after the town was started, it began to decline. More suitable areas for growing tobacco were discovered. Men left the fields and turned to other work, and the exodus from New Yarmouth began."3
