James Covey
M, #8770, b. circa 1619, d. 5 September 1712
Father | (?) Covey |
Last Edited | 29 May 2001 |
James Covey was born circa 1619 at St. Dunstan, Stepney, London, City of London, Greater London, England.1
James Covey died on 5 September 1712 at Mt. Wollastone (Now Braintree), Norfolk Co., Massachusetts, USA.1
; from Orr Family Homepage: [quote]
James left England for Braintree, MA, in 1640, and moved to Westerly, Rhode Island in 1661. He landed in Boston with Mary Unknown, his wife from England. In 1639 or1640 he was granted, James Covey of Mt Woolystone for four heads.
Four heads were probably James, Mary, and sons John and Hope. He sold his land in Braintree to William Veza on October 1651. This land was previously owned by Henry Neales and consisted of 19 acres with a house. Although only claimed to be an unsubstantiated theory, the following was probably a fairly accurate account.
James Couve (Covey) with his wife Mary and brothers John and William arrived in Braintree, Mass from England in 1639. James was born in 1615, Mary in 1619, John in 1624, and William in 1625. The last mention of James in the Braintree Town Records was in 1656 in connection with the building of a road, but other Mass records show the birth of a daughter, Mary, in 1647, the first birth registered in Braintree. Brothers John and William at sometime moved a ways from Braintree eventually arriving in Dorchester county, MA. There is no mention of them in Braintree except by inference and I would judge that they left their brother's care as soon as they felt they were able to be on their own.
John was listed in a Dorchester County census in 1690 with comments that he had descendants in Maryland, Virginia and the Carolinas. He was not found after 1695. William was also found in Dorchester County and was head of the only Covey family found in Maryland after 1695.

Notes of Billy Covey
At this time (approx. 1615) in history the spelling of the name "COUVE"seemed to be the accepted practice. Only after this time did the commonly accepted of "Covey" come into general use.
This is not from the original work of Billy Charles Covey, the writer, or collector, of this entire work. What follows is a collection of material from several sources. I am copying directly from a very large work given to me via the internet. Unfortunately after printing the "hard copy" the material was lost to the computer and I cannot recall who should actually get the credit for most of the work.

The following is from the "Covey Cousins", Editor: Rita Ackerman......
......................
James Couve with his wife Mary, and brothers John and Williamarrived in Braintree, Mass, from England in 1639. Following are bits of data gathered from a wide variety of sources and, in brackets, my own supposition. The last mention of James in the Braintree Town Records 1640-1793 was in 1656 in connection with the building of a road, but other Mass. records show the birth of a daughter, Mary, in 1647, the first birth recorded in Braintree;
son John born in 1658 and son Hope in 1660, both also born in Braintree. (Brothers John and William at some time movedaway from Braintree, eventually arriving in Dorchester County, MD. There is no mention of them in Braintree except by inference and I would judge that John was listed in a Dorchester County census in 1690 with comments that William was also found in Dorchester County and was thehead of the only Covey family found in Maryland after 1695.
Now for my thinking on this accumulation of "data". I am inclined toaccept the birthdates as sent to me by Wes, in spite of several sources I have come across giving ca 1625, ca 1629 and before 1640 as thebirth dates of James and Mary.
(a) I find it impossible to believe that a 14 year old boy with a 10 year old wife and 2 children made the trans-Atlantic trip, and it would be highly unlikely, if not impossible that a girl give birth to two children before the age of 10.
(b) On Feb. 1640 a grant for land for 4 heads was recorded in Braintree. This could be John, Mary, and two children, or John, Mary and dependent brothers (The inference referred to above). To own land a man had to free debt and at least 21 years of age, etc. To qualify, John had to have been born no later than 24 Feb 1619.
(c) Smidged or poor writing could easily explaion the descrepancies in dates-especially could a smudged or shaky 1 could be taken for a 2. 1 is sometimes read as a 2 and the other way round.

From Diane Keeton [dkeeton@TSO.Cin.IX.net]
We are both descended fromHermanus Batdorf and his second wife Elizabeth Catherine Read.
My ancestor was Casper Batdorf's brother David Potter who lived in Rockbridge co. VA. Because both Gasper Potterf (as he was known) and his stepbrother George Gall, Jr., lived in OH, I have been able to find a few extra things on them. (I live near Cincinnati)
Hermanus died in about 1763 and Elizabeth Catherine Read Batdorfmarried John George Gall in 1770. George Gall's wife, MariaStultz, had died after 1766 when George Jr. was born. Elizabethand George Gall had at least 2 more children, Michael and John, that I can definately identify, but I know there were more Galls either from George's first marriage or with Elizabeth.
During the Rev War George and Elizabeth lived in Washington Co., MD, where George was a 1st Lt and his step-sons David, Philip and Casperwere privates. After the war they all moved to Rockbridge Co. VA.
By about 1790 George and Elizabeth had moved on to Pendleton Co. (West) Virginia. Elizabeth was still alive in 1810, and was probably still alive in 1812 when George died.
David and Philip stayed in Rockbridge Co. and changed their name to Potter. David's wife was Margaret when he died sometime between 1812 and 1815 in Rockbridge Co, but he may have been married twice. Besides the 10 children named in his estate, he had 4 illegitimate children with widow Sophia Miller. Philip's wife was Katherine; he died in 1834. I can identify 8 children of Philip's, but there may have been more.
Casper lived in VA until 1805 when he migrated to Preble Co. OH. In 1824 in that county he headed a delegation which wanted to divide the township in which he lived. He was a well-respected citizen and his argument was so persuasive that not only did the county commissioners create a new township, but it was named Gasper Township in his honor.
I have compiled all of this recently, and I believe it may be new information for researchers of Hermanus Batdorf and his wife Elizabeth Catherine Read. I have not seen it anywhere else. Batdorf researchers all have lots of information on Casper but almost nothing on David and Philip, nor Hermanus's widow after she re-married.6

Among those who remained in Rockbridge County was her son, Philip Batdorf-Potter and her (believed to be) brother, Frederick Rieth. Frederick is last found in Rockbridge County, Virginia in the 1850 Federal Census. [end quote]8,9,1
