Joan Ashton married Robert Davenport, son of John Davenport and Alice Bromale.1
Joan Ashton was born circa 1375 at Ashton/Lyne, Lancashire, England.1
Joan Ashton died in 1443 at Bramhall, Cheshire, England.1
; per Mark Allen: [quote] Can anyone throw any light on the parentage of JOAN DE ASSHETON, the wife of ROBERT DAVENPORT of Bramhall (Bromhale) in Cheshire?
Ormerod quotes a contemporary document thus...
"20 Ric II. Sir John de Assheton knt, Hugh de Aren, and others enter in to a recog (March 14 1397), in 120 marks to John de Davenport of Bromhale, touching an intended marriage between Robert de Davenport, son of the recognizee, and Joan, daughter of the said John de Assheton; whereby the said John de Davenport agreed that if Joan should die issueless within the 3 years after the nuptuals, he should pay her father £40 of the the said 120 marks; and should the said Robert die as aforesaid, his father should return only £20. A counter recog was also enrolled with this in Recog Ro 20 & 21 R. II. mm 5, 2"
I have seen other sources which claim to quote BLG 1886 giving her mother as MARGARET DE LEGH. However I don't have access to an 1886 edition of BLG to confirm this.
The problem is that the Sir JOHN DE ASSHETON who married MARGARET DE LEGH was almost certainly dead long before 20 Ric II (1396/97), as he was called to Westminster in 1324, knighted in 1342 and survived by his wife. His son or grandson, both also Sir John, would seem to be more likely going by the dates concerned.
Many thanks
Mark

It appears Joane close both George's and Robert's account about the same time in 1674 when she married John Beale.

; Fled France in 1685 to Scotland. Settled in Limerick, Ireland (Data fromOur Harris Family' by Ouida May Harris Milner) The Pickens clan were French Huguenots. They left France in 1685, stayedin Ireland for a while, ultimately emigrating to the US, settling inPennsylvania (Data from William 'Sandy' Andrew's research) REFERENCE WFT VOL 1 EDITION 1, 1996 Married in France, then moved to Ireland after the revocation ofthe edict of Nanted in 1685. Research indicates that the Pickens inAmerica have varied origins. The name appears from early times inScotland and England in different forms and indeed seems to have variantsin other languages. Like many other family names, Pickens man haveoriginated as a name from several wholly independent sources. The name isfound in lowland Scotch dialect spelled 'Picen' and has become generallyspelled in Europe as 'Picken'. The final 'S' has been added only inAmerica. General Andrew Pickens in this letter to General Lee in 1811made the following statement: 'My father and mother came from Ireland. MyFather's progentors emigrated from France after the Revocation of theEdict of Nantes'.[12754 Noble.FTW] According to Pickens Family tradition, Robert Pickens was living inFrance when the Edict of Nantes was revoked October 22, 1685. Until thattime, he held a very high responsible position in the French Courts. ManyHuguenots (these were a group of Protestants) were forced to leave thecountry in 1685, because they refused to renounce their religiousconvictions. ; Fled France in 1685 to Scotland. NOONE, that I am aware of, has ever seriously thought the Ester JeanneBonneau in question was the daughter of Anthoine Bonneau and CatherineDuBliss. The information laid out by rdunbar has been available toresearchers for many years. However, one only has to go to the Bonneau Forum to see the livelydiscussion to see that there is a very very strong belief in theexistence of Ester Jeanne Bonneau. The information which follows is from my own files. I have not posted anyof this on my own web site, Pickens Place, as it is unverified, as far asI know. I submit it here only as a POSSIBLE answer to the riddle that hasstumped many researcher of the Pickens name. Normande Jean Bonneau b. abt. 1635 in LaRochelle, France and died est1662-1726, married Catherine Roi b. abt. Mar 6, 1638/40 in LaRochelle,France. The children of Jean and Catherine Bonneau were: (1) Ester Jeanne Bonneau b. est. 1645-1669 in LaRochelle, France and d.in Limerick, Ireland, m. Robert Andrew Pickens/Picon (2) Anthoine Bonneau b. Abt 1658 in LaRochelle, France and d. Abt. 1700in SC., m. Catherine DuBliss (3) Probably other children A seemingly simple solution to the riddle would be for Anthoine and Esterto be brother and sister. It would not be odd or uncommon for Anthoine toname one of his daughters after a respected sister, hence a daughter ofhis own named Ester. I lay out these possibilities in the hope of stimulating some discussionon this matter. Perhaps someone out there has the missing key to unlockthis mystery. I welcome any and all comments as to this possibility.
