In the 1860 census taken on July 25 Del waslisted as 20. In the 1870 census taken on July 18 Del was listed as 29.In the 1880 census taken on June 16 Del was listed as 40. The only waythis makes sense is if Del was born between June 1 and June 16. Thus the1860 and 1880 census listed his age on the day it was taken and the 1870listed his age as it was on census day (June 1). The 1870 census takerdid it the correct way. Most enumerators didn't, thus it makes sense. ---------- He was a part time Hardshell Baptist preacher, and believed inpre-destination. One time he was on his way to church on his horse, hewas carrying a gun. When someone he met noted the gun and asked if hewas pre-destined to die, why was he carrying a gun. He answered 'Wellhow do I know but what it is someone elses time to die!' He was a self-educated doctor and had a kind and sympathetic heart. Hebrought patients into his home and treated them and took care of them. This was a trait that carried through to Gramma McElroy (Harriet J.Beauchamp) Aunt Mabel told me(Thelma Gibbons) about his treating patients withtuberculosis. There was an epidemic in Arkasas in the 1880's and 1890'sand several members of the family were suffering from the disease.Seeking abetter climate for them, they left their homes in Arkansas andmoved to Texas. Gramma Paulina died after they came to Texas. He married again and movedto Cleburn, Texas. He had one daughter, Mary, by this wife. ------- Delmedia's second wife applied for a civil war pension in Texas. Whatfollows is what I received with the Widow's Application For a Pensioninformation. I'll put all handwritten stuff in these brackets . I'll put my own special comments in [brackets like this] Some ofthe handwritten stuff was extremely hard to read and is likely to havesome errors.
