Through his paternal grandmother he descended from Thomas of Woodstock, s of EDWARD III. His son the 2nd Earl married as one of his wives a sister of the Earl of Rutland (see RUTLAND, D) and his grandson the 3rd Earl married a sister of the Earl of Bedford (see BEDFORD, D). This creation became extinct in 1654.²
