He was born in or before November 1338 (of age in 1359). She died, probably aged about fourteen, before 25 Dec. 1361, probably in the childbirth of her only child on 6 December. He was married for the second time after 1361 to his cousin Joan Clinton, widow, with issue, of John de Montfort, Knt. (last of record on 25 May 1361), and daughter and heiress of John de Clinton, Knt., of Coleshill, co. Warwick (of baronial descent), by Joan (descendant of Charlemagne), younger daughter of Roger Hillary, Knt., of Bescote). She was born 1341/2 (aged twelve at the death of her father), and was granddaughter of John's paternal aunt, Katherine de Sutton, wife of Roger Hillaty, of Bescote. They had a son John (who predeceased his mother s.p.) and two daughters. SIR JOHN DE SUTTON served in the army in France, and died testate aged about thirty-one, probably in France, in 1369 or early 1370. She was married for the third time in 1370 to Henry ap Griffith, Knt., of Wichnor, co. Stafford. She died by 1386.

Warwick, on 6 Dec. 1361, his mother probably dying in childbirth. His birth occurred at Coleshill probably because it was the home of his father's nearest cousin, Joan (later his father's second wife), while Dudley Castle was occupied by his father's widowed mother and (since November 1359) her second husband, Richard le Fissher, with whom John de Sutton was in frequent litigation. After the death of his father about 1369 his wardship and marriage were granted to Richard Fitz Alan, Earl of Arundel. During this period he was married to JOAN ______. He served in the King's Fleet under the Earl of Arundel after he came of age. JOHN DE SUTTON died on 10 Mar. 1395/6. His widow died in April 1408.

He was married after 14 Mar. 1420/1 to ELIZABETH BERKELEY, childless widow of Edward Cherleton, 5th Lord Cherleton (died 14 Mar. 1420/1), and daughter and heiress of John Berkeley, Knt., of Beverstone, co. Gloucester (of Magna Carta Surety descent and descendant of Charlemagne), by Elizabeth, daughter of John Betteshorne, Knt., of Bisterne, co. Hants. They had two sons and three daughters. As Lord Steward in 1422 he brought home the body of King Henry V to England, and was chief mourner and carried the Standard of King Henry V at his funeral. He fought throughout the wars with France and was a firm supporter of the House of Lancaster in the Wars of the Roses. He was summoned to Parliament from 15 Feb. 1439/40 by writs directed Johanni de Sutton de Duddeley militi. He was the first of his family to adopt the surname of Dudley as an alias for Sutton. He was taken prisoner with King Henry VI on 23 May 1455 at the first Battle of St. Albans, and was wounded at Blore Heath on 23 Sep. 1459. ELIZABETH BERKELEY died shortly before 8 Dec. 1478. "John Dudley knyght, lord Dudley" died testate (P.C.C., 8 Mules) in his 87th year on 30 Sep. 1487. They were buried in St. James's Priory, Dudley.
