Roman Emperor. His reign saw the final fall of Rome to the Barbarians. He was born in 384 AD and was declared Augustus and co-ruler by his father, Theodosius I, in 393 AD. Two years later the Empire was split in two, with Arcadius controlling the East and Honorius, still only ten years old, ruling in the West. During his youth he relied on the support of the general Stilicho, who secured his own position by marrying his daughter, Marian, to the Emperor. He moved his capital from Mediolanum to Ravenna when the Visigoths invaded Italy in 402 AD, leaving the centre of the country undefended. During his reign the Empire came under attack from barbarian forces outside its borders and also from usurpers from within. There was a two year long revolt led by Gildo in Northern Africa from 397AD until 398AD and several rebellions led by self proclaimed "Emperors" in Britain. A barbarian army under the command of Radagaisus ravaged Italy before being defeated by Stilicho in 406 AD and an invasion of Alans, Suevi and Vandals threatened Hispania in 409 AD. Honorius proved unequal to these challenges, doing nothing when the Visigoths under Alaric besieged Rome in 408 AD and claimed a huge ransom from the city. Alaric soon returned to Rome to support Priscus Attalus' Senate-backed usurpation against Honorius. Negotiations between the two men broke down in 410 AD, leading to the sack of Rome. Honorius then employed a new commander, Constantius, who put down several uprisings in the West of the Empire. He also entered into an alliance with the Gothic ruler Ataulf, who he enlisted to capture and defeat the rebel Jovianus in 413 AD. He died of dropsy in 423 AD at age thirty-eight and was succeeded by Valentinian III. Bio by: js
